Top Five Courses You Want to Play----That you realistically will be able to!

Recommended Posts

I don't really have that many connections, I know people that know people at Shinnecock, Maidstone, National, Friars Head, Oak Hill etc, but I think that's too far removed to ever get invited out, because the people I know never get out themselves.

So for me my realistic top 5 is as follows:

1) St. Andrews
2) Pebble Beach
3) Pinehurst No. 2
4) Pacific Dunes
5) Chambers Bay

I have been really lucky to have played a lot of bucket list type tracks but the ones still on the list are:

1. St. Andrews (when my kids and my brothers kids get a little older we will bring our families and play St Andrews plus some others)
2. Pacific Dunes (I have a friend who caddy's there and have a standing invitation just so far out of the way for a weekend trip. And I have a wife and two small kids, gonna happen soon)
3. Pebble Beach ( I had a trip booked for this summer but need to go back east for family stuff over that time. Canceled but next summer looks good)
4. Whistling Straits
5. Shinnecock Hills ( I have a good friend who is a club pro on the island and says he can make it happen, he has brought me to some other exclusive clubs in the area so I believe him)

plan on playing pinehurst next summer, and probably will play bandon dunes this summer ... so won't count those ... been to several courses in scotland, but have not been to troon, turnberry, or royal dornoch ... would also like to play macrihanish and narn ...

haven't been to ireland, but in addition to bally, ryl portrush, ryl county down, and lahinch, i would have to play old head, which i believe to be the most stunning layout in the world ... if you haven't heard of/seen it, check it out ...

i'd take all those over pebble/straits/etc ...

My list includes more than 5 but are the ones that are at the top 5 that I am most likely to play:

Torrey Pines
Kiawah (Ocean)
TPC Sawgrass
Pebble Beach
Pinehurst #2

These belong in the most likely category but we ae not allowed more than 5:
Doral
Bay Hill Club
The Greenbriar

This list is the "probables"!:
St. Andrews
Ballybunion
Valderrama

To each his own, but you might be disappointed in Doral and Bay Hill. Set your sights a little higher.

Well, we'll bring it up again now that the year is basically over.

How about 2015? What are your bucket list courses that you think you'll actually be able to play?

I actually failed again for the most part. Was finally able to get to Wolf Creek so I got one of them.

This year I only have two specific targets.

Sand Hills: again. We'll start earlier this year since we have to be ready to go on short notice.

Riverdale Dunes: In Denver. Young man who is like another one of our kids lives on the course and I didn't make it over to play with him this year. Hopefully, I'll make it happen this year.

Top 5 in my last ten months in the UK:

1. Walton Heath Old & New
2. Gleneagles Kings Course
3. St Andrews Old Course
4. Carnoustie Championship Course
5. Sherwood Forest Golf Club

Top 5 in the USA after I return home:

1. Streamsong
2. Pinehurst #2/4/8/Pine Needles
3. Reynolds Plantation Great Waters
4. Kiawah Island Ocean Course
5. Bandon Dunes...all of it
[/quote]

I was able to bag Walton Heath Old Course, Gleneagles Kings Course, St Andrews Old Course, Royal Aberdeen, Royal St George's, Hunstanton, The Dukes of St Andrews, & Hadley Wood--all were fabulous courses with the exception of The Old Course...that was a let down.

For 2015 (I am moving to Washington in Feb, so this is doable):

1. Chambers Bay
2. Bandon Dunes (all of it)
3. Streamsong (my parents live less than an hour away)
4. Spyglass Hill
5. Bayonet & Blackhorse (at the old Fort Ord Army post, now owned by the city)

Dec 24-31 our family members from CO and CA are all chipping in and sharing a VRBO house in Pebble Beach for the holidays. While there I have it set up for my son and I to play Monterey Peninsula CC Shore and Dunes and also Poppy Hills. I've been really fortunate to have played all the other 17 mile drive courses in the past so this will complete the list of courses there for me, but this will be my son's first venture onto any of the courses there so I am very much looking forward to it and to watch his enjoyment in being there for the first time.

Riverdale Dunes is fantastic - it's a shame I don't play it more than a couple times a year living in Denver. The Noles course there makes for a convenient morning/afternoon 36 with friends. They won't charge you for the cart on the second 18.

Random trivia: Stewart Cink won a Nike Tour event at Riverdale Dunes in '96.

I've heard so many good things about it. I'm in Denver enough that there really isn't any excuse why I haven't made it yet. Played twice in Colorado this summer at Common Ground and Collindale in Fort Collins. Actually even drove up to the club house at Riverdale after the auction one day. It just looked so busy that I turned around and headed for home.

How was Ellerston? The only course left on my bucket list for courses in Oz. You live in Sydney?
