This is really apples and oranges. Kiawah is $$$ and Myrtle is $. It's really what you want to spend. It's going to be hot no matter what. If your wife likes laying on the beach, either is fine. If she wants to do more shopping and have some scenery, I would suggest Kiawah as you have Charleston right there. Myrtle becomes a tourist trap in July. If you want to play golf and your budget is rather unlimited, here is what I would suggest:

Kiawah:
Ocean
Turtle
Have your Pro call Briers Creek if you have one. If not, try and make the call yourself.

Myrtle:
This is really on where you are staying as it can be an hour from one side of Myrtle to the other so ill make recommendations based on that:
South:
Caledonia
True Blue
TPC Myrtle
Middle:
Dunes Club
Grand Dunes
Barefoot courses
North:
Legends courses
Rivers Edge
Glen Dornoch
Tidewater

Have a fun trip!

Kiawah is great is you are looking for Superb Golf, quite places and beach areas. Also you would need to go to Charleston to get night life and shopping. This is also the more expensive of the two.

Myrtle Beach is great for Excellent golf, some high, medium and low cost. Something for everyone. You can get houses or condos in MB. Night Life, Shopping and lots of things to do are close. The course are spread out if you are playing 36 in a day just make sure to schedule them close. MB will have lower costs.

Kiawah Ocean is better than anything in MB and the Charleston privates generally speaking are better than the grand strand ones. MB has a better depth of public golf running the gamut from shabby to really good. I would guess Charleston would offer more for your wife (or at least my wife) to do from a shopping, art, food, history, etc. point of view than MB.

I can not recommend playing Turtle Point.

One thing to add. I am not sure the age of your son but if he is under 18 most courses in Myrtle will let him play for free. Or atleast they use too.

Most courses here in Myrtle are part of the Kids Play Free program. Juniors 16 yo and younger play for free with a paying adult.

To answer the OP: Like some others have said it really is comparing apples and oranges here.

Kiawah is top notch golf courses for top dollar. for 2 or 3 rounds at Kiawah you're going to be paying about the same as you would for 5 or 6 rounds in Myrtle. Top 2 in Kiawah are the Ocean and Turtle for public. The CAssique course is private but if you can get out there it is fantastic golf.

In Myrtle my two favorite courses are The Dunes Club and Caledonia. Those are the two most expensive in Myrtle as well. A couple options that are a little less expensive but still awesome are TPC Myrtle and True Blue.

I've never been to MB but I've had the privilege of vacationing at Kiawah with my parents since I was young. I can't think of a better golf resort. The Ocean Course is fantastic and the other resort courses are nice as well. I personally recommend Turtle Point - its a very nice Nicklaus design with 3 holes right on the Atlantic. If you are looking to play on a well maintained course at a reasonable price, you can play the two Seabrook Island courses after 3pm for $75. Ocean Winds is a nice little track over there that weaves through the sand dunes.

Your wife and son will love Kiawah. There are awesome shops at Freshfields Village and Charleston is a short drive from the Island. The beaches are also some of the nicest on the Atlantic and they aren't crowded.

Have a fun trip!

Have fun!
