Today was playing a big comp had 75 and it took me 4 hours to get there and 4 hours to get back,2 hours into my journey home i was informed that i had been disqualified for smoking !! worst reason u have been disqualified for ?

I am not a fan of smoking, but that seems ridiculous. It is out doors after all.

Was it on the rules sheet?

As long as you are of legal age to smoke, and you weren't overtly bothering other people, I agree that getting DQ'd is a little bit BS.

I am also interested to know if it was on the rules sheet, or if it was just an arbitrary committe decision.

P.S. In light of your story, I find your username slightly amusing.

Maybe we could get this back on topic. Personal opinion on smoking is just that...personal.

I only played one year of high school golf, and was terrible. Somehow, I got stuck with a group of pretty solid players, and was hacking around my way to a 120 or so when they decided to just let me play foot wedge to save some time. I was totally embarassed and wanted to quit then, but it wasn't an option. I should have been DQ'd, but they knew it wasn't worth the fight since I was no threat.

I quit smoking a long time ago, but agree people who choose to should be able to do it outside anywhere, anytime... just don't throw the butts on the ground... This IS the United States, freedom and all that... Glad they stopped people from smoking inside... that used to be nasty even when I was still smoking. It is CRAZY IMO that anyone would ever get DQ'd for smoking! Insane!

Back on topic.

I just got DQ's a few weeks ago: because it was raining, the guy at the check in table told us to play lift clean and place... it stopped raining after about 2 1/2 hours... some groups didn't start until after it had stopped... including the Tournament Chair. When he came it and heard we had played LCP, he DQ'd all of us... I believe he was incorrect since a Committee member told us to do it, but we would have only won $20 each so we let it go. The course was a muddy mess, I had mud on the ball on every shot through all 18. We were soaking wet.

That was the first time I have ever been DQ'd in 30 years....

I was DQ'ed from a tourney back in high school because my Cleveland BECU wegde said square grooves (stampped on the wedge)on it!!!! This was the qualifing tourny for the state championship. A coach called me on it. I told him that the wedge had the grooves converted to V grooves. He pissed about it more and said that the ruling was already done and there was nothing I could do about it

I'm not getting this.

Those Cleveland wedges (with the square groove monicker in the toe) were never illegal.

Ah.

I always find that the best tournaments I've played in have been ones where the committee actually know what they're on about. :russian_roulette:

torrey pines is a non-smoking venue. i was kinda wishing that jesper or clarkey or somebody would win and light a cigar (or maybe cabrera would have a relapse due to that frightful putting.... but i didn't wanna hope for that). anyway, i don't think breaking a course policy or even a city ordinance is gonna get you dq'ed. unless, it's also prohibited by the tourney, and i never heard that it was at the open.

and what about the governator with the cigar patio on the lawn of the capitol, gotta love cali!

They let the players smoke. Jiminez walked around with a cigar the entire time.

good. i figured they would, but i read some article that said otherwise. i knew i was a fool for believing that...

medical marijuana but no smoking on the golf course, one more reason to love it!

A Doctors note goes along way. But they still frown on it due to fire danger.

Back to the DQ situation:

A number of years ago I joined the men's club at a municipal golf course, then played a couple of weeks later in the club championship as my first event. On the first tee they gave out one scorecard and one rules sheet to the group. Another guy in the group volunteered to keep score. I played well that day, shot 68 (I was a plus handicap at the time, no b.s.) signed the card and it was submitted to the scoring table. On my way out to the parking lot, the men's club President (he was very proud of that title)rushed out to me and told me that my entire group had been DQ'd. It seems there was a local rule in effect for the tournament that the time you completed 9 holes and 18 holes had to be written on the scorecard (an anti-slow play measure) which we'd failed to do (btw, our group didn't fall behind.) This rule was written on the rules sheet. Our group appealed (the guy who kept score felt terrible and volunteered to be the only one DQ'd). The pro shop let us play the second (final) round under appeal to the chagrin of the President. I shot 72 I think, and my 36 hole total was 2 shots lower than the next player, but the tournament committee upheld their disqualification of our foursome. I heard (I didn't play any more of their men's club events) that starting with the next tournament they lowered the penalty to two shots.

Pretty harsh, but I do read each tournament's rules sheet now. :russian_roulette:

Got DQ'd in high school for signing an incorrect scorecard. Actually signed for a stroke more than I had. All the teams coaches talked about it and mine thought it should be dq, others didn't. I agreed with my coach and was dq'd. As I now understand it (correct me if I'm wrong), you keep the higher score; not?

BTW, finished 2nd. Kinda sucked!

Signing for a higher total score shouldn't result in a DQ. The higher score stands as far as I'm aware.

I once played in a group with a lad who added up his score wrongly, and signed for a 71 when he actually took 72. I learned something new that day - that you don't get disqualified for being crap at arithmetic. All the scores the marker put down, per hole, were correct and under the rules that's what a player signs to confirm - not the total score at the bottom which the nummer added up wrongly.

Off topic; but it amazed me at the time and I've remembered it ever since.

Yes you are only responsible to write the correct hole-by-hole score in the correct boxes you are NOT responsible for adding them up. The Commitee has the responsability to add them up correctly.

Also it is NOT a DQ if you sign a card for a HIGHER score. It is only a DQ for signing a card with a LOWER score. If you sign a card for a HIGHER score then the score stands as signed.

If you guys ever read the USGA Rules Decision Book you would see that there is WAY to many idiotic rules IMO. We have gone to far in making up silly rules instead of just Policing the Rules ourselves like the game was intended!

IMO you should have never been DQ'd if it was not a high school event unless the local rules sheet stated this rule. Whether you like smoking or not it is NOT against the rules and is also legal. They have talked about changing this rule and adding yet another stupid rule to the USGA Rules Book because they say it calms the nerves and gives some players an unfair........give me a break..........anyway if you guys ever want to think about quiting golf just read the Decisions Book it is about enough to make you go through with it!

It has always been a huge pet peeve of mine that they let people coach high school golf that don't have a hint about the game or no the rules.

In the mens club championship at my club last year a buddy of mine was caddying for me on day 1 (of 2). i just tapped in for par on 13 after missing birdie from 5 feet ( bit annoyed ) and threw my putter back to him. he dropped it and made a slight mark on the green which i then repaired. my playing partners reported it and i was disqualified for no reason which they could show me in the rules when i called them up on it.

Thats great SDgolfer but that your opinion is completly irrelevant to what he is asking. If your outside why should you care if people smoke. While you cannot 'cig smoke', I cannot stand people who preach on others they do not know like those people in the Truth commercials.

exactly! i dont smoke, but ccpgolf nailed it...
