ProV1X vs. ONE Black 08' vs. B330

Versus the Cally Tour ix
I am fully entrenched in a search for a new ball. I have a tendency to change golf balls far too often and I would really like to decide on a ball and stick with it. The last time I did that for any extended period of time was last year with the ONE Black. I've been playing the Tour ix for the last 6 or 8 rounds now and while I like it, I want something with similar ball flight and distance, but with a little more feel and spin around the greens. I'm down to my last two Tour ix's, so I'm ready to try something different, better perhaps?

My driver swing speed is about 110mph-112mph. I play with medium spin, not an excessive amount, but I don't have a problem spinning the ball either. I find myself playing in moderately breezy to windy conditions a lot of the time, which is the thing I like most about the Tour ix, it's a great wind ball. I prefer more of a flat ball flight, with medium trajectory. Below is how I would rate each factor in terms of performance from 1-10.

Driver Distance: 8

Iron Distance: 8

Short Iron/Wedge Spin: 7

Greenside Feel/Spin: 7

Putter Feel: 7

Durability: 7

Opinions? The Tour ix is a really good ball, and I've shot some really good scores with it, but I can't help but feel that something is missing. For what it's worth, based on the reading and research I've done up til now, I'm leaning ever so slightly towards the 08' ONE Black. However I could easily by swayed in almost any direction. Thanks a lot!

-Brian

I'm in a similar position to yours. I played the HX Tour for a couple years and started playing the iX this year. I've shot some great scores with it, but I feel like I don't spin it quite as much as I'd like. The thing that keeps me with the iX, other than it being a good all around ball, is that it is just phenomenal in the wind. It holds its line in the wind much better than any other ball I've played, and it is less affected by head/tail winds. This is a big asset in both accuracy and distance control.

I have played the TM TP Black LDP, and find it to be looong with a nice amount of spin. However it is not immune to the wind like the iX. The B330S is another very good ball--although not quite as long and a little too spiney off the wedges. One other ball I would like to try is the Srixon Z-URS. I tried the Srixon last year and thought it was good, but not great. I'm not sure if there have been changes to the Srixon this year, but the ball comes highly recommended by golfballselector.com.

I don't know if this helps any, but it is the situation I am in right now.

I agree with the Tour ix comment. It is a great ball, but could be better around the green. If I was in your position I would either go with the Pro V1x or the B330s, I have played both and they perform about the same. I work at a golf club and the balls I see purchased the most are Bridgestone and Pro V1's.

Hope this helped.

You're suggesting the B330-S, or the B330? The B330-S is supposed to be a higher spin ball, more similar in performance to the ProV1 correct? My impressions from what I have read are that the B330-S is to the ProV1 as the B330 is to the ProV1X.

In terms of driver distance and ball flight, are each of these balls going to perform about the same? Is one significantly longer or short than another?

Thanks again.

I don't think the Bridgestone/Titleist comparisons are quite so straightforward. The B330 is a harder ball that is better suited to higher swingspeeds than the B330S, but it also does spin more off of wedges than the B330S (at least according to the Golf Magazine article). The B330S is slightly longer off of the driver at 90mph, but I believe the B330 is longer at higher swingspeeds. Then again, these are according to the parameters of the test and the only way to really know how they apply for you is to give them a test yourself.

Yeah, I've read through that article a countless number of times. I use it as a reference everytime I find myself saying... "Oh, maybe I'll try this ball, or maybe that ball instead." The stats that are shown in that article almost seem to contradict what I had previously thought about certain balls, for example as you say the B330 and B330S. I believe it actually has the ProV1X spinning more off a full sand wedge than the ProV1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't seem to jive with conventional wisdom. It is one of the few places you can find quantative data though, for whatever it's worth.

"for whatever it's worth" is the real question. I'm not sure how much these results would actually apply to my swing characteristics, but it does give a basis for comparison. Regarding the V1-V1x issue, my pro did tell me that while he was sponsored by Titleist he noticed that with each new generation of balls the V1x would get softer and spin more while the V1 would get harder and spin less to the point where the latest generation were quite close and that some folks felt the x spun more. This was before the article was released so there was no bias in this AFAIK.

I picked up a dozen 08' ONE Black's off the bay this afternoon. It was a pretty good deal ($30 w/ free shipping) so I just decided to jump on it. Unfortunately there was only one dozen available, otherwise I may have grabbed a couple dozen at that price. I played this morning and so I'm down to my very last Tour ix. I won't play again until this weekend, but I needed make some kind of decision before then.

For some reason, and I really can't put my finger on it, but I continue to resist playing the ProV1X. I keep reading that the ProV series is basically the gold standard, and God knows it's the most played ball on both Heaven and earth. First it was price, but then I found out that you can get a dozen of them in "Like New" condition from lostgolfballs.com for only $24, and I've read good reviews about them, so there went that excuse. :russian_roulette:

This season I tried the B330S, Pro V1, ix, and the TP Black. The winner for me has been the TP Black. A hair longer. I am not going to say a whole bunch longer, but a half a club maybe on my irons. That helps with mishits.

The B330S seems to be the shortest. Decent durability, good spin, but I feel like I am losing a few yards.

ix seemed longer but the feel off my wedges was awful. I have waited and waited for the i but it hasn't showed up in my golf store. I have given up waiting. Durability was okay.

The TP Black was longer, spins well, and has decent durability. The only drawback is that it doesn't feel "great" off the putter. The Pro V1 has a really good feel off the putter. The TP Black is taking some getting used to.

I haven't tried the Nike. I hit last years Nike Black and the durability was terrible. My wedge shredded large chunks from the ball. Not sure if this years ball made any improvement there.

Just my 2cents.

I've been playing all the golf balls you guys have, except none of guys have tried the Nike One Platinum 08's? NOP and the TM TP Black 08 are two of the best balls of the year. I've played quite a few Callaway xi also but would like to try the Callaway i.

I'm still fond of the Pro V1 X, and I still have a couple dozen old Hogan Apex Tours, some Srixon HyBrid Tours and a few other old timers, of which all are still good.

Cheers

ProV1x all the way, I have tested them all and best results are with the Prov1x.....

Exactly. If you can play and you care about greenside playability no ball will touch the titleist. There are balls I like off the tee better IE the Tour IX (beast off the tee) and the TP Red however neither one gives me the check that an X does. I will take predictability greenside every time over maybe a few yards off the tee. You can look around all you want you will always come back to the X. Just look in the bags of amateurs that is where you really can tell. I cannot remember the last time I played in a tournament that the whole group was not playing a proV. Other balls come close especially the TP Red but they still dont have it down.
