Mack Daddy 2 slate vs Chrome

ryle

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm about to pull the trigger on 3 new MD2 wedges. Unfortunately I can't really decide which finish to go.

I only hit the slate versions and not the chrome ones.

So my question is, does the slate feel different than the chrome one ?

I've played with a 60/14 slate for roughly 30 minutes and almost everything of the slate on the sole was gone and I could see metal.

I personally don't like the look of the slate wedges. I've always had chrome wedges. There is absolutely no difference on the Mack Daddy's between the chrome and slate versions.

I just wanted to know if the chrome feels somewhat firmer than the slate, I'd prefer the chrome because I don't like them to rust.

Thanks for all the answers guys !

The Mack Daddy 2's in slate will start to rust over time. The finish also wears off very quickly on the face and along the sole. I have both a 50* in chrome and a 56* in slate. If I change it would be to get a 56* in chrome. Just because I like the look a bit better. Now Callaway has more sole grinds coming out, so take a look at that aspect also.

Do you mean the tour grind ? As far as I know, the release date is not specified yet

I have one of each and much prefer the chrome, it's sort of a matt finish and looks great.

The chrome not so much.

the slates look really good w the finish removed

a less shiny chrome ;) ... but will still rust up a bit

but if u don't like the rust, just dip em in CLR for a few mins and they will be clean again

How did you remove that finish?

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

Put CLR in a paper cup
Soaked for about 20 mins each (just below the ferrule)
Light scrub w an old toothbrush after and done

Paint fill stayed in tact perfectly

+1 remove the finish best of both world. FYI vinegar works 2 for removing the finish. Mine are rusty but it comes off easily if you prefer them to not be.

Can you do that to the slate wedges?
If your asking about removing the slate finish with vinegar. The answer is yes. I would say it takes a little longer than clr, but we always have it in the pantry. I just let them soak for 15-20 min, then scrub them with a plastic brush. Then soak them another 10-15 min. Just keep in mind they rust easy with the finish so without it they rust like crazy. I personally like the least amount of glare possible whether it's rust or a dark finish. Here is a link to a picture of mine.

Archergolfer15: Its not really a durability issue. They have been as durable as other wedges Ive played from Titleist, Cleveland, Mizuno, or fourteen. Its more that steel that isn't stainless rusts, I just choose not to clean it off. It is just surface rust it doesn't effect the metal. Personally these are some of the better wedges Ive played. I have hit the pings, but just don't like them as much as other offerings. This is coming from a die hard Titleist Vokey guy. Honestly I feel weird if I dont have a vokey in the bag. The other thing is if your like me and hit a lot of balls and play quite a bit, you'll notice wedges wear faster than any other clubs. I just don't worry about it cause it give me an excuse to HO! :nyam:

OspreyCI: No problem.

I have slate and chrome and prefer the slate.

Although the slate and chrome are the same size, the slate heads look a little smaller to me, and the chrome looks a little bulky.

As far as the finish on the face, it wears of on both. It has no effect on play - its purely aesthetic.
