Shipping your bag to a course

I have read about people shipping their bag to a course to avoid paying airline fees and having to carry your bag to the airport. With airline fee being no more than $50 I assumed the ups price was about the same. Well, i recently shipped two complete sets with bags that were much lighter than my own and the cost was over $100. Do people have a better way to do this?

Fly Jetblue.

You get to ship one piece of luggage for free per person and that includes a golf bag up to 50lbs

I went to Cabo a couple of weeks ago on Alaska Airlines and they didn't charge me anything for my clubs. Thought the fee was going to be $25, but I guess they give you one bag free.

From recent experience I will tell you that shipping is not as easy as it looks to be. Shopped both Shipstix and Fed Ex recently from Cape Cod to Palm Springs. Fed Ex on-line Quote was not accurate. Entered exact weight and measurements and was given a reasonable quote. Took them to Fed Ex and the quote on site was nearly twice as much. Had a print out from my on-line experience and was met with a shrug. This was well within their time frame, etc…so no reason for a discrepancy. Weight and measurements conformed exactly. BEWARE. ShipStix has an asterix list that you need to pay attention to. Weight and dimensions especially. I didnt need pick-up at my house (which is their differentiator) but went through the process. They bid it out to UPS and Fed Ex and maybe other shipping agents, get a volume discount, and mark it up to be competitive. Came in the same. I had free shipping from the airlines so it wasnt about cost, it was about making sure my clubs would be there and I had a tight connection. Just be aware. And ddepending on where you're going, you'll need to send them minimum of 5 (business) days in advance.

i know it is probably easier to ship via UPS or Fedex direct to hotel or club......but i just can't do it. Even if it is cheaper i just can't do it. I would drag my club onto the plane with me if they let me. i keep my clubs me all the time. My babies are always in the truck or house w. me. When i do have to fly, i say a little prayer of protection over my clubs when i give them to the delta agent.

When I flew Southwest from Cleveland to Phoenix I thought the price would be $50 per bag, but because it was 1 of 2 checked bag for a person they didn't charge us anything

I've never seen a case where shipping was less expensive than checking on the plane.

Well....I'm freakin here at Portland airport waiting for my club to start my Bandon trip because the airlines lost my clubs and have no clue where they are! 10am tee time tomorrow may be lost!

Have never had an issue with shipsticks! I decided to carry my clubs because it was free! Remember: you get what you pay for!

Really sorry to hear about the mess.

Alaska was late getting my clubs to me a few months ago in another city, but they said they would cover the cost of rental clubs & basic clothing. It's obviously not ideal, but Bandon does have rental sets.

(Luckily the course loaned me a free rental set, and I eventually got the clubs the next morning.)
