Caddy Recommendations - Whistling Straits

Recommended Posts

The straits course is all fescue so it is a little slower to grow in... our caddy said some years it doesn't green up until June.

We are playing at Kohler in a couple weeks. I will add that i live in Green Bay (45 min north of WS) and Wednesday was the first day we could hit off the grass @ the range at my local course. We just had a week of 70 deg weather. In one week my lawn/course did a 180. We did have a early start to the golf season here but it has been in the 50's and REALLY DRY!!!!!!!! Finally got some rain this week with temps in the 80's yesterday.

I had a great time. Greens were starting to get better from being punched still a little slow but awesome experience all around. Started out with a birdie on #1, made a 20 footer for par on 2 and doubled 7 for a 37 on the front. I doubled 10 and 18 on the back and had a bogey on 14 for a 78 with 13 pars. Had an awesome caddy, really good on reading the greens. He was much better than our playing partners caddies and has been there 14 years. His name was Jon (they assign caddie numbers and his was 3 if you want to request him).

How were the greens on Straits?

Played the Straits on Thursday and the greens were still sandy from being aerated and were a bit slow. Still rolled fairly true without making the ball hop all over the place. We had some rain and some nice weather between then and now so I'm sure they're even better now.

Had a caddies named Matt and Zack and they were very good at reading the greens as well.

Here's a quick recap of my trip.

Thanks for the pics in the review. With 2.5 weeks between when you played and we're playing I'm liking our chances for the greens being in pretty good nick.
Until I saw you mention the 7142, I hadn't realised they'd pushed the tees back since our last visit, by a couple hundred yards.
We played the greens at 6400 and a bit and I see they are now over 6600.

Good to see you had some fine weather to play in.
Yeah, the pictures show the imperfections more than you would notice with the naked eye (and through play). No doubt the greens will be tip-top by the time you get out there.

The greens are on the card now at 6663.

We played the green tees... Blue would have been a little much for the group I was with

And I love their suggested handicap range on the scorecard - I'm playing pretty sh1te at the moment; however, typically I'd fit into their suggested range for the blues, LOL!
No way in hell am I playing the Straits course at 7100 yards. That said, I could lighten my bag for the caddy, as I wouldn't need to bring any irons, D, 3W, hybrid, and then wedges would do the trick.

Nice recap and pics. Did your caddy take pics for you?

With the recent rain and weather, I'm liking our chances, so far, for a solid weather round and smooth-ish greens on Thursday afternoon.

Our caddie took some pics for us. I was up there for a conference and played with one guy from my office in VA and then two guys from the home office in Milwaukee one of which doesn't play golf very often. You may be able to guess which one. I'm the one in the purple shirt

Well, I must say I had a great time. Got to play Straits in high 50º with a steady wind at 10mph and gusts up to 40mph, and we had a caddy named Mike who has been there for a while and caddied for Kaymer and other big names over the years when they've come by. Mike was amazing at reading the greens and giving us our targets off the tee, and I mean perfect. I think he missed one or two reads tops, the rest was just us not hitting the line.

Green conditions were so-so. They weren't bad, and some were sandier/bumpier than others. All in all, I can't complain about the experience.

On a slight tangential note, we played Erin Hills in perfect conditions, and the experience was almost religious. Simply amazing...

Glad to hear. Hope you enjoyed the state I love and live in. Come back during the fall (late September/early October) and make that same drive from The Straits to Erin Hills and the drive alone is a religious experience.

Wisconsin just might be one of my book's most underrated states for golf and beauty. And flights to Chicago are so affordable now that I just might come back this or next fall for a quick getaway :)

Don't forget you could fly directly into Milwaukee or Madison as well.

You'd probably like Wild Rock & Trappers Turn in Wisconsin Dells, the 2 courses at Lawsonia in Green Lake, and The Bull at Pinehurst up there near Whistling Straits, plus the other three Kohler courses. I hear SentryWorld in Stevens Point is really nice too. There are a couple courses in the northwoods area that I hear are really excellent layouts as well - would have to research them a bit more. Also can't forget to mention the Lake Geneva courses (Geneva National, Hawk's View, & Grand Geneva) since flying into Chicago you'd only be 1 1/2 hours away.

If I were planning a trip to Wisconsin for golf, these would be the stand alone courses with Whistling Straits and Erin Hills being reserved as the top spots.

Great tips! We actually played The Bull and Meadow Valleys while we were up there, and your other recommendations look great.

There are some private Chicago clubs on my list for next time too, so I'll most likely be coming out again :)
