So my cousin is getting married this weekend and I am going to be in Newport, RI area and was hoping for some advice on which courses to play. I tried checking around and the only 2 courses I could find were Newport National and Montaup (along with all of the exquisite and pristine CC's they have). I am playing Newport but was hoping to get in another round at a gem and Montaup isn't really exciting me. Anyone have any other suggestions?

PS. I wouldn't be opposed to driving an hour for the right course.

If you want to head over to Providence, then Triggs Memorial Golf Course, the city course, is a pretty cool and decently preserved Donald Ross design.

I assume you mean you're playing Newport National (not Newport CC) - if you had access to Newport CC then you would be all set - Newport and Newport National....
If not, then Triggs is a good option as mentioned above - also Exeter CC is only 25 minutes away - very nice public, decent shape, good layout, a real test from the tips...
Richmond CC is further away, maybe 45 minutes - better than Exeter, probably more $$...
I believe you can play in the afternoon at Agawam Hunt for like $80 also - it's an old private Ross up in Providence area, that will allow some unaccompanied play, I would call....

other than those three - maybe Allendale CC in Dartmouth MA - probably an hour away or more, semi-private, pretty good...

Green Valley (next to Newport) is a little better than Montaup....

Allendale will take green fees if you call ahead....only 35 minutes from Newport (and well worth the ride)

if you cross the Jamestown bridge - Meadowbrook is an option

I wouldn't go out of my way for Triggs - 5/6hr round

I can't offer a Gem, but an alternative. Jamestown Golf course is right across the Newport Bridge, 9 holer with incredible views of both bays. Its very open, easy, fun track usually in good condition. Green fees ran $17-18 for 9 holes last year. The course is over 100 years old, and links style. They don't take tee times except Sat and Sun mornings.

It would be a great option if you just had 3 hours to kill.

Meadow Brook. Reinevated Donald Ross...beautiful and long!

Meadowbrook is not a renovated Donald Ross, they bulldozed the original goat pasture and built a new course. Honestly Montaup is the best second course you've mentioned, or for a quick cheap nine Jamestown. Do not waste the gas driving to Exeter or Richmond, forgettable layouts with worse conditions.
