True Temper Black Gold

Recommended Posts

I continue to be amazed at the number of people who buy these in the wrong flex and then don't like them. They are a superb shaft but you have to look at the specs on the true temper web site. http://www.truetemper.com/golf/blackgold.asp

It clearly states that a 37.75" 5 iron shafted with an R Flex BG shaft will frequency out at 317cpms using a 5" clamp. Gents this is the equivalent of a Rifle 5.5 flex, with an R Flex shaft.

These shafts not only run stiff, but they are heavy also. If you get the right flex they will load up as smooth as butter. These are great shafts with very tight tolerances but I think most players fall victim to the wrong flex.

i'm currently playing DGS300's in some rac tp forged irons, and although i play standard lies, my shafts have to be shortened 1/2". i am very highly considering switching to the black golds, but i don't want to fall victim to getting the wrong flex like one user previously posted, and i'm completely leaving my ego out of this as it has burned me before (getting a stiff shaft just because i play driver in stiff shaft even if i knew it wasn't right = golf not fun). i've checked out the recommended swing speed chart for the black golds on golfsmith and according to that, i should be fine with stiff, but since my irons need to be shortened by 1/2", would that make them play stiffer, and therefore should i go with the regulars?

Not a regular here but just picked up a set of MP60 with TT BG +1/2" in X. I bought them on a whim because I wanted to try the MP but was wanting to try a stiffer shaft. I have always played DGs300 but felt I had to be careful with them in my 962's. I

didn't do a great deal of homework before I bought. I now read that many feel they are stiffer than what I might expect. I will give them a good try and get back to the thread. Hopefully they won't be too much work. Should be here this week.

I will say I did go to the TT website and took the shaft fit test...much to my relief it pulled up BG X stiff. I have demoed several irons lately and the MP60 has been the most precise to me. Be back later this week.

Had my MP 60's fit today. The club fitter, a 20 year fitter and low handicapper, did the fit. I was playing some 962's 2* upright (5 iron at 64*). The mp60 standard 5 iron lie is 60.5*. I was fully expecting to go 2, maybe 3* up but the fitter just grinned. He mentioned the BG shafts and said he put those in his MP14 last year and loves them. He did mention there is something about the BG's that no one mentions. I did the fitting and ended up essentionally 1/2* up!. Evidently the BG's don't allow the club toe to dip forward like the DGs300 and most other shafts. I always thought my 962's had the toe way up in the air but it worked. With the BG shaft the Mizunos didn't need that upright bend. I am hitting the X shaft pretty easily...I was concerned it was going to be too stiff after reading this thread. The fitter didn't feel played any stiffer than his x100 that he had been playing for years. He is sold and I am too. He did say that this shaft is probably not a big priority with TT and it may go by the wayside in the near future.

saw ur comments and am considering these shafts as well. i am a +4 with driver swing speed of 105-110. i play standard s300 and have a problem ballooning into the wind and am a high ball hitter. i am a pretty consistent ball striker but have been told i need a stiffer shaft but x100 feels like a metal bar and havent like them. since we have the same clubhead speed i was wondering if u think the stiff flex is stiff enough for u or do think that an x stiff? i have heard the stiff is more like a rifle 6.5 than a 6.0 kind of thing. thanks

Just a follow up on my MP60's with the BG X shafts. Very well suited to my swing both on the practice tee and the course. I love the control and the ability to hit it high, keep it low, work it a bit here and there. I am hitting my 53* MPT about 115 with a slight draw very consistantly. I hit my 8 about 150 pretty straight to a slight draw. I am pretty comfortable down to the 4 iron. The 3 is a crap shoot but it always has been for me. If I don't get quick with it I can pull it off. I think the small head on the MP60 3 iron is going to take some getting used to but I put some practice time in and began to click a few. The BG X shaft is a bit heavier in the long irons but a bit lighter in the short irons and this suits me just fine. I love the control on the wedges, both on full shots and around the green. I get nothing 'hot' with these which I like. Anyway, if you play the DGs300 and find your control hit and miss, especially when you want to step on a shot, I think you can play the BGX without too much to worry about. Enjoying this combo a great deal.

i think the swing weight and the length are the key to finding the right flex. on TT's site, iron length are 1/2" shorter (6 iron is 37.25"), believe it or not, 1/2" shorter plays weaker flex compares to swing weight. so, if you are playing typical 6 iron (37.75"), it will play stiffer. yes, longer the shaft, stiffer it will play.

Z-Z65 (Stiff): Weight: 108.8g Torque: 1.6 Description: An updated version of the ZZ-Lite. Lightweight steel shaft that has a high flex point and stiff tip section. This shaft is only offered in stiff. The Z-Z65 is similar in flex to a Dynamic Gold S300, but is much lighter in weight. A very common shaft in ISI irons through current iron offerings. Ball Flight: This shaft is designed for a mid-ball flight due to the weight. It should fly lower then the CS-Lite and higher then the DGS and DGX.

Black Gold is a mid-flex shaft with a Low-Mid trajectory.

I love the Black Gold shaft. For me it is a close second to the True Temper Tour Concepts. I like both better than Project X or KBS Tours.

I have some old I-3's with Z-Z65's. I think you will find the Black Golds to bring down the trajectory a bit compared to the Z-Z65's. I would not expect a big enough difference to make the change, unless you also prefer the feel of the Black Golds. The feel is outstanding and superior to the Z-Z65's, but that is subjective and just my opinion. YMMV.

Just went from DGS300 to Black Gold in X flex. It's feels like a stout shaft, but I didn't seem to have a problem loading it. Must be that "butt-stiff" feel everyone talks about. Driver swing speed is 110.

This is kind of comparing apples to oranges since the flexes weren't the same, but the black gold X flex flew higher than dynamic gold S. Trajectory was really High and flat. Shaft feels much more stable, doesn't feel like the head is wobbling around during transition, but this is probably due to the increased flex.

I had no difference in distance vs s300. Going to go out and do some more testing with knock-downs and punches, but so far so good. Would definitely recommend this shaft to anyone looking to raise their iron trajectory a little.

Hey guys sorry to bring up a old thread but i'm having a huge problem! I normally play s300 and PX 6.0... i recently got a set of ping s59 with black gold shafts.. and i've lost 10-20 yards in my clubs!!!

What they used to be: PW - 130, 8 iron - 150, 4 iron- 210

Now: PW- 115, 8 iron - 140, 4 iron- 175... WHAT HAPPENED! Is it because Black GOld is a little stiffer than usual? can this effect my iron distance that much?

I'd fit into the same specs (s300 px 6.0) I've had these In a set of bridgestone's (wedges too) and my distance Is consistent with any other shafts. I was concerned when I got these that they'd be too stiff but that wasn't really an issue and as my skill has increased (100's to high 80's In one season) I appreciate these shafts more and more. Consistent ball flight that lands soft and spins back from 8 iron and up (especially if your a divot guy). I had a stint over the summer where I lost 20 yards as well from over playing and bad form.

I know this is an old reply but did you come from a more forgiving set of irons where the lofts are way different? Realistically I could take a buddies club with an s300 and hit it the same distance (granted the lofts aren't jacked).
