In Canada where hockey is THE sport, especially this time of year, this is all that's being covered. In every report I've seen, there hasn't been any proof other than rumors in the media that Gretzky is in any way involved in this. I hope he wasn't for hockey's sake. :drinks:

I saw a report today that they had wire taps that he is in that prove he had knowledge of it.

 

I agree this would be horrible for Hockey.

I have never been a Wayne Gretky fan, But I do agree that it would terrible for hockey. This is terrible timing right after the season long lock out and hockey struggling to get its fans back.

 

I sure hope he is not involved.

His wife gambled $500,000 in 40 days, i would have to say he knew something was going on.

 

Read all the little stories inside that link, Tocchet has mob ties. It does not sound good.

I read the story John and you are 100% right it doesn't look good.

 

How would you not know your wife was gambling that kind of money??

 

This all doesn't add up if you ask me. Why don't people think before they act??

I was just watching a segment on ESPN about sports gambling in general. All of the following were mentioned...Gretzky, Jordan, Mickelson and Rose. Personally, I don't have any problems with professional athletes gambling (legally or illegally). I DO have a problem with those same athletes placing wagers on their own sport...let alone their own team.

I was thinking the same thing about Pete Rose and the hall of fame. If it was up to me I would bot him form the hall of fame. What kind of a message are these people sending to the youth of this world?

 

I like to gamble but i'm sure not going to gamble on a pro sport that i was involved in.

 

That would kind of like me guaranteeing someone a refund of $10,000 knowing i can't do it legally but make the figures work so they get it.

 

Its about morals and ethics.

Yea he has to be involved somewheat. Can you tell me you would be COMPLETELY oblivious to your wife betting 500,000. I hope it turns out the best for Mr. Gretzky because this would be horrible for hockey

doesnt anyone realize what 500 000 dollars is to wayne gretzky. to him it would be like 100 bucks or so to people like us. if some one took 100 dollars out of my bank account i dont think i'd notice. when is comes to people worth tens of millions, maybe hundreds of millions, 500 000 dollars isnt as much as you would think

He said tonight, he never gambled once with Tocchet, his wife said he never gambled with Tocchet, therefore even if he knew about it....what can they do??

 

It's Wayne Gretzky, this is the only reason this story as big as it is and will die in the next two weeks due to the Olympics.

 

The only reason this story got so big so fast was because Janet Gretzky was involved therefor the whole media assumed Wayne was.

 

If he is lying, which isn't in character for him and would be HIGHLY RIDICULOUS AND MORONIC, then his whole career is tarnished and he loses a HUGE amount of respect from Canadian Hockey fans.

The NHL has no policy against gambling on other sports. So even if he gambled on other sports, which I doubt but is possible, the comparison to Rose is baseless because Rose violated the rules of MLB.

 

Is Gretzky affiliated with the Canadian Olympic team this year, I cannot even believe I'm asking but I'm not sure.

Thank you YYZlef, EXACTLY my point....I LOVE AMERICAN MEDIA BY THE WAY.

 

He didn't gamble on hockey, his wife didnt gamble on his team, she is "aloud" to gamble on hockey (not in the way she did, but she is aloud to legally just like you and I are)

 

Try to read sites such as....www.tsn.ca, sportnet.ca instead of espn.com and sportsline.com, or watch TSN Sportsnet or The Score to get the real story not the blown up American version.

 

Get the facts straight before you bash the hell out of him

 

1. He didnt gamble on hockey

2. He didnt gamble in this illegal ring

3. His wife placed bets, not on his team

4. He's not resigning, stepping down, etc. from anything

5. He is still the Head of the Canadian Olympic Hockey Team

6. He is aloud to bet on sports...just because hes "Wayne" doesn't make gambling illegal if done legally

7. I'll say it again...the only reason this story is front page news is because the media, mostly american, has blown it out of proportion with allegations of Gretzky using this gambling ring to bet on hockey....

 

He didn't bet on hockey, he didn't use the gambling ring...end of story...

Sorry one more thing too add.

 

He is an NHL coach, which means he is on the road ALOT, plus he was on the road scouting, meeting and picking Canada's Olympic Team. So its not like hes with his wife a whole lot, I'd say he's with his wife very little, and I'm pretty sure hes not checking his bank balances daily, if at all.

 

So the point about him being oblivious to the money...really doesn't have merrit. I'm pretty sure Wayne Gretzky doesn't check his bank balances all too often.

I think Miguel Tejada gave all three of them a B-12 injection that wasn't really B-12.

 

 

Seriously, what's the big deal. Gambling goes on every day every where so who gives a hoot. The entire double standard as applied to gambling makes me nauseous. Good grief you can watch POKER on 3 different networks at the same time some nights. Give me a break already. You want connections with organized crime look into who picks up the trash if your municipality contracts that service out. I've never yet met somebody who was unwillingly fleeced betting on anything. I'm stopping now before I work myself into a tizzy.
