Best multiple course facility?

Recommended Posts

Had a chance to play Saucon Valley Old this past Saturday. What a great club! I had played the Old course once before, and also have played the Grace course. Haven't yet been out on the Weyhil course.

This got me thinking about clubs I've been to that have more than one course. What do you think makes a great multiple course facility? Do the courses have to complement one another, or just both be of really high quality? How much does the character of the club itself come into play? How would you rank multiple course clubs you've been able to play? I'll give a rundown of some of my favorites and why. Very interested in what everyone else has to say. So, in no particular order:

Saucon Valley: Amazing variety in the courses considering they are located right next to eachother.

Sunningdale, Old Course and New Course: Courses that are similar aesthetically (parkland, heather, isolated holes) but play very differently. Play fourball on one course in the morning, have some drinks, and play alternate shot in the afternoon. If I lived in London I don't think I'd get any work done because I'd be over at Sunningdale all the time.

Champions Golf Club, Cypress and Jackrabbit: Neither layout is particularly striking, but the courses are always in great shape. Lots of good players so a game is always available. Men's locker room is one of the best spots in golf.

Merion: We all know about East. West is short and quirky, but also a ton of fun.

St Andrews: Similar to Merion in that everyone knows the Old Course. I've been fortunate to play both the New and Jubilee courses many times, and if it weren't for all the excellent golf in Fife they would also be on must-play lists.

I haven't played Winged Foot or Baltusrol, which I'm sure some of your will add to the list. I've played both at Olympic but not a huge fan of the Ocean Course.

You're obviously fortunate enough to get on some excellent private courses, that I reckon I won't be seeing anytime soon and it also seems that you are Euro-based; however, as much as I will be beating that dead horse: Bandon Dunes Golf Resort :)
That can be an answer to loads of multi-course facility questions.

My other two personal faves would be Whistling Straits/Blackwolf Run and Carnoustie.
If we expanded it to not the same club/resort, but courses within a stones throw of each other, that'd be a huuuuuge list of awesomeness encapsulating large swathes of the UK, Ireland, Monterey, and North Carolina. One day hopefully I'll get to the areas in the Netherlands and Australia as well.

Koehler is definitely awesome. Someday I will get to Bandon.

It's not a multiple course facility, however, Mesquite NV has some fabulous courses within a few miles of each other. Conestoga (personal fav); Falcon Ridge; Arnold Palmer Oasis & ?? and of course Wolf Creek.. There's a few more as well that I haven't played.

Went to PGA National last year and had a blast. Everybody knows about the Champion course with the Bear Trap, but the other courses were nice too.

I live in Hilton Head SC and we have 3 terrific Plantations off Island that are some of the best multi-course private Clubs / neighborhoods in the country.
Berkeley Hall has 2 Fazio designed courses (the North and the South) and they have one of the absolute best practice facilities in the country.
Belfair also has 2 Fazio designed courses (the East and the West).
Colleton River has a Pete Dye and a Nicklaus Signature course.

All 3 Plantations have beautiful Clubhouses and their courses are kept in outstanding condition.

I would also include, although on a slightly lower level, Moss Creek and Callawassie.
Moss Creek has 1 Tom Fazio course (The North) and 1 George Fazio course (The South). Both great tracks and kept in very good condition.
Callawassie has 3 Fazio 9's (Palmetto, Dogwood, and Magnolia). All 3 very different courses and kept in great condition.

All of the courses mentioned above also have some very scenic holes along the wetlands / marsh of the Low Country and/or the Colleton River.
They are simply some of the most beautiful places to play golf and most of them are also very challenging.

I was fortunate to play the USGA Mid Am at Saucon Valley last fall. I can't begin to say enough great things about the club. I think it gets lost a little with Merion, Pine Valley and other great NE Pennsylvania clubs. People forget that it has hosted 2 USGA Senior Opens and a Women's Open. We played the Old and Weyhill, but didn't get to play Grace. I might be in the minority, but Weyhill was my favorite, by a small margin. One of the assistant pros liked Grace the best, but the Old hosts all the big events. Being down South, it was a treat to play such a traditional Northeast style course, with the bent grass fairways and bluegrass rough.
