TaylorMade 300 Forged

Recommended Posts

Awesome solid set of "players" forged cb's. Thin toplines, minimal offset and an all around great head.

Bonus for you tour snobs is that Muira forged many versions of the heads. Here is a PIC of the retail 300 forged and the tour issued Lehman grinds. And for those that don't know what the Lehman grind is...

They have a squarer toe than the retails, they have a special grind on the front edge and the topline and cavity is a bit thicker to add weight back that was taken from the toe. Completely different dies made these heads than the retail versions. And Muira did all the forgings. No serial # on the Lehmans.

This pic shows the retail and the squarer toed "Lehman" grind.

The Lehman's are one of the finest irons EVER. They look great and perform even better. The key is the right shaft.

Retail TM 300's with Flighted Rifles 6.0.

Swing profile- medium tempo, a little upright, more of a smooth swinger than a violent hitter, carry the 8 iron 150.

Game profile- scrambler. Terrible off the tee right now. Rely on putting and short game (everything within 170). Fire at flags wtih 6 iron on down.

It's difficult to do a direct comparison to my previous sets- I'm fitter now and have picked up a few mph on the old SS. And it's all subjective for the most part and carries the IMHO (in my honest opinion) tags plus the good old YMMV (your mileage may vary).

Distance- shaft/head combo works out well with the longer irons. 3 and 4 irons are carrying a club further than my last set (MP 33's with DG R300's). Shorter irons are about a half club longer.

Trajectory- (more shaft then head I guess), is medium high on the long irons which is perfect, exactly what I'm looking for. Too high on the shorter irons. I get caught on in head winds a little and balloon a touch.

Feel- (again, might be the shaft, but TFR's are supposed to be more muted than DG's) Soft, not very soft. The MP33's w/DG R300's and Cobra Forged SS's w/DG S300's were very soft. The 300's are similar to MP30's w/DG S300's, but more solid at impact. The 300's are a little click-ey in comparison to the 33's and SS's.

Forgiveness- Very good/forgiving. Distance loss on slight miss hits isn't too penalizing. A little more forgiving than the MP 33's. Much more forgiving than the MP 30's. And by mishit- I usually miss either thin or towards the toe. A bad swing is a bad swing and equals bad results ($hanks), that's not what I'm referring too. Slight misses/good misses. The most forgiving club I've used is the Cleveland TA-5. The 300's are less forgiving than those shovels.

What else is there . . . Workablity- I don't work the ball much, tend to try to stick to whatever I'm hitting that day- usually straight and either a small fade or a slight draw. On the range, it seems like it's workable either way- again I don't do much of it (if I'm between clubs, I choke down a little instead trying to take a few yards off with a fade).

Looks- they look sharp. The club looks similar to the MP 33's from every angle but behind- cavity versus muscle back. From address, face, toe, similar profile and shape.

Not sure if this will get any hits since there haven't been any posts on this thread in a while, but what the heck. I have been playing these irons for 6 years now. Mine came with the made in japan stickers, and I swapped the rifles for dynamic gold lite x100s, and they have been phenomenal clubs. But after 6 years, they are pretty worn down and I am thinking of getting new irons, but I don't even have a clue of where to start. The main things I love about these clubs are the feel and the fact they are pretty long heel to toe, which is good since occassionally I will toe a few shots, and with the 300s I really wasn't punished too bad. Any one who used to game these who moved on to greener pastures, let me know what you have tried that are better than these.

Previously played Callaway Diablo Edge irons, but was looking for more of players club as my handicap has been fluctuating from 8-12. Found these in my father-in-law's garage. Hit them on the range, then played nine holes. These are the real deal. If somebody had told me these were a new release prototype, I would have believed them. Outstanding feel, and decent forgiveness for a forging.

I've had my eye on the Wilson fg tour v2 and the new 714 AP2s, but I'm putting my search for new irons on hold for now. The 300s are going to be in the bag for a while - all this coming from a guy who previously was not a fan of TM irons.
