A Scor of issues with my new Scor wedges.

I have eluded to this on some other threads but have never really told the complete story on this site. And while there are tons of people reviewing Scor wedges, most have not said what I am about to.

I like most club hos who frequent this site, especially the older Hogan fans, was intrigued with the prospect of Scor building new Hogan irons. I am considering getting some of these later on in the year. BUT, since the demise of Hogan Golf, I have discovered Mizuno and it will be tough to pry my beloved Mizzies out of my interlocking grip.

I have never bought into to the Scor Wedge Philosophy. First there was the part that the gaps should be even and that you should make full swings into the greens. As for even gaps, I said Poppycock! I don't need 4 wedges. I want, in addition to my pitching wedge, one wedge to use when I wanted a bit of roll and one wedge to use when I wanted no roll. So for the past year or so, I carried a 52 and a 60. I never found myself missing the 56. And I liked the gap it created at the top of the bag (but that is another thread also.)

I did not make full swings with the wedges, occasionally I did with the pitching wedge but not the others. 75% was all I normally did unless I had to go over a tree. I have also been playing blades, at least through 6 iron for a number of years. Instead of hitting a pitching wedge 130 yards, and my miss being 40 yards left, I often hit a waist high 6 iron that flies 130 yards and hops and stops, and my miss with that being a pull that goes 5 yards left. Aim a couple of yards right and have a short putt either way.

Traditional wedges for me spun too much and on a full shot, I always run the risk of backing it way up. This looks so cool, but there is nothing worse that really catching it cleanly, and backing one off into a hazard. Besides, that is not real distance control. I prefer one hop and stop. Also, I simply did not have the distance control on a full shot I do with a 75%.

OK, I have had a great short game for years but my long game left much to be desired. I had an OTTER swing, (over-the-top, early release) that I have spent years trying to get rid of. I could make changes and be rid of it for a while, but then I would get under pressure, and the old problems would come back. (See Tiger Woods, US OPEN 2015) but 10 times worse. I finally fixed that, with a more square-to-square swing that is not really the point of this thread. The problem was, with the new swing, when using it for the partial swings, it was dead straight. I could literally hit the flag stick, or be 10 yards over the flag, or 10 yards short or 20 short. I had no distance control. So I knew I was going to have to practice my distances again, like I had 2-3 years ago, basically starting over. And since I was doing that anyway, I decided it was time to swap over to Scor Wedges and give them a try.

Meanwhile, I had an outing planned with some friends and my Scor wedges showed up that week, I was awful with them. Chili dips and blades and when I did make contact the distances were not even close. I hurriedly swapped back but still had issues. My choice was to suffer through the embarrassment of poor play with my friends or swap back to the old swing with the old wedges. I decided to stick with the new stuff and hope I could work it out on the range before they got there. Well, needless to say things didn't work that way and I felt like I probably dropped 20 shots that day because of poor wedge play. But I continued to work on it.

I soon discovered, that the KBS counter-balanced shaft robbed me of the head heavy feel I liked with some of my old wedges. This also lead to tempo issues, raising up and lowering my chest during the swing. Chili dips and blades.

i changed the shafts out to Dynamic Gold Wedge Flex shafts and immediately things changed for the better. The Scor Wedge is not really built like a conventional wedge, with a large heavy sole and big bounce designed to get the ball up higher in the air and spin more. I currently have in my bag a 42* and 48* on KBS C Taper Lite and 53* and 58* on the Dynamic Golds.

It has now been 4-5 weeks with these reshafted wedges, and I admit I have a ways to go to get back to the comfort level I had before, but I am ready to give my opinion of Scor and the their philosophy, which I know means nothing to anyone reading this. :derisive:

The Scor Wedge is built more like a 9, 10, 11 or 12 iron. By that I mean the meat of the club and muscle pad is built just like a MB iron with the weight higher than a wedge. This produces a lower flight with less spin. I am sure the KBS Genius shaft counter acted some of that, but they are in the garage.

I soon found that the Scor Wedges were far superior on some shots than a conventional wedge. Chipping, bump and runs, 3/4 and, yes, full shots are awesome with these. I find the spin to be much more predictable than conventional wedges. The size and shape of these wedges are very appealing to my eye, and the offset is such that I can hit them very well, indeed.

The Dual V Sole that is much touted on the Scor site and in reviews is very nice, but not any nicer than most modern MB irons. They interact with the turf in a variety of conditions that is seamless. It is hard to talk about something that just doesn't feel like it is there. I have played firm conditions and sloppy muddy conditions and the sole has been flawless.

Now, what does this not do well, in my opinion. It does not get the ball up and land it as soft as a conventional wedge. I am not saying you can't hit the ball high, I am saying that on the partial shots of less than 50% they do not perform as good as a conventional wedge.

We also have very soft sand, not native to Texas, so a flop out of the bunker requires a medium to high bounce. It may come later, but the comfort level out of the bunkers with these is not there yet.

Now, having said all of this, I am more in tune with the Scor Philosophy of equal gaps now than I was before. And this has certainly emphasized the importance of fitting these wedges. I bought them for a steal and had I paid full boat retail for them I would have demanded my money back because of the shafts. And while I am prepared to admit their superiority on some shots, never forget that the big bounce and soles and lower center of gravity on the sand wedge was designed because conventional iron soles do not do as good a job out of the sand and deep grass as a conventional sand or lob wedge.

Thanks for reading, chime in.

I am right there with you, RR. Your experience mirrors mine. I'm still not comfortable with my 56 out of soft sand bunkers because there just isn't enough bounce. To try to solve the issue a bit, I took a 54 and bent it to 56 to get a couple of degrees more bounce. Still not where I'd like it, though. I am a high ball hitter, and outside of fluffy bunkers, these are a godsend for me. Theoretically, they should actually spin more because of the higher COG, but I sure haven't been backing any shots off of the greens I play on! I'm tempted to keep the Scor 9, P and G in the bag, and get a high bounce Cally or Cleveland for the S.

LOL. I have been trying some scor wedges as well. I picked up a few off of eBay, 57, 52, and a 42 and will probably add a 47 to replace my PW, keeping with 5 degree gaps. I like the feel of the wedges and I feel like I can hit them high or low with good consistent contact. I really like the smaller head look as well and found I am getting all of thespian I need and play Q Star srixon balls

What makes you think the Scor philosophy is "that you should make full swings into the greens." You might want to go back to the website, read some of the Wedge Guy Blog, or read the material the company sends out with its wedges.
I think it was the part that said:
That insight inspired us to completely re-engineer the design of wedges to make them much better at full shots than any other wedge you can play.

I underslept this morning, and was out on the course when the sun came up and teed off as soon as I could see down the fairway. I thought a lot about this thread and these wedges around the greens as I played a quick 9 holes.

I think, I may come to rethink the above statement over time, but maybe not. I have 4-5 weeks with these and 40 years with the conventional wedge.

The Flop shot or Blast out of the sand or deep grass to a short sided pin shot is the area where I find the Scors lacking. I often find my own skills lacking in this area also. So it is only natural that I will feel more comfortable trying to pull off what is normally a low percentage shot with the club that is similar to what I have always used for that.

I currently have a 42-48-53-59 Scor and a 64 Mizuno. I could see changing these lofts up to a more even gaps. And a 60 vs a 64 would probably also work.

A bit off topic: I read a wedge review on another (spy) website. This quote applied to me and definitely made me chuckle:

“I should also mention that having the 64° in the bag is like having a bottle of tequila with you at all times. It creates an opportunity for infinite fun and excitement, but can very often lead to some extremely poor decisions.”

It took me about 15 rounds to get used to my Scor wedges (51, 55, 59), and I must admit that my respect for these clubs was earned through a trial by fire.

While getting used to the Scors, I blew quite a few good rounds with garbage shots...but every shot I blew was less than a full swing. On full swings, the Scors were money from the beginning.

I absolutely BOMB these things on full swings, and while they spin LESS than Vokeys or TM TPs, I actually prefer this for accuracy on approach shots. There's nothing worse than striking a wedge so cleanly that you know it'll spin back a good 20 feet from where it lands; with the Scors, I am generally trying to nail a specific yardage with the confidence the ball will stay where I hit it.

On shorter shots, the v-sole is as versatile as advertised, but as I mentioned earlier, it definitely took some getting used to. I've got about 20 rounds on these things now, and I've gotta say—my confidence is sky high from just about every type of lie.

The 51º is the best club in my bag right now. I'm actually playing par 4s to my 51º yardage just so I'll be able to make a confident stroke while aiming near the pin.

If nothing else, the Scors have piqued my interest to see what the new Hogan Ft. Worths are all about. Bottom line? Give these Scor wedges a shot if you're so inclined.

As wedges are looked at more and more for their total distance (wtf?) and players see pros hitting their gaps over 140, OEMs are lightening the swing weight of these lofts to accommodate full shots.

Personally, I have my 9-iron down set to d9-E0. I gave up a couple of yards and started hitting 15% more greens over the last 6 months. I think that very generally, the lighter the swing weighting, the less accurate we get. More of a pendulum feel gives you better tempo control, and better yardages. It doesn't matter if you play even gaps or by feel; heavier wedges provide benefits even if you give up a couple yards.

I mean really, some 54s are stock D2 now. How are you going to be smooth and accelerate if you have no feel of the opposing end?

Just my 2¢. Great post!

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

 • 4 months later...

I've recently started using the Scor 4161 wedges as replacements for my old Cleveland CG15's. The Scor's aren't readilly available in NZ and I'd tried Callaway, Vokey's and Mizuno wedges from our local proshop but none of them performed better than the Clevelands. I'm not a confident wedge player so really need some assistance. I did some analysis on-line to try and find a wedge that would suit my sweeper action and read a few reviews of the Scor's that sounded promising.

Anyway the short answer is I took a punt and got a 50/54/58 set imported. Fortunately I really like them. The easiest shot to play with them is the greenside chip. They glide over the grass and the small heads never seem to catch. Bunkers are also easier to handle which is great because I'm a hopeless bunker player! It's actually the full shots that I'm taking longer to adjust to. I sometimes get inconsistent distances and often shank the ball. I'm hopeful however that as I get used to the smaller heads this will improve.

The Scor's are definitely worth a look if you are a sweeper and if you lack confidence with the big brand offerings.

I've got a 43 and 48 Scor wedge and they are the best clubs in my bag. That being said, I don't use them for the shots that RR and a couple of others have mentioned re less than optimal performance. My 60 Renegar is used for the high flight green side shots and flops with great results. I won't talk about sand--I have issues there that are definitely not club related.

BTW, RR, Richard and Apprenti23--miss you on the other forum. Ought to come back and stir things up occasionally, just for jollys.
