What is the best Golf career?

I am currently thinking of what kind of future golf career to pursue. I have heard that being a teaching pro doesn't get great money and you hardly ever play. I would like to go to college and make good money in golf. I am very interested in every aspect of golf and would appreciate opinions on golf jobs and golf related professions. Personal experiences and opinions are welcome. Please help me out with this one. I was thinking of teaching, golf course design, club engineering, or something along those lines.

I would say if you want to work at a golf course...obvious GM or Director of Golf and a high end course.

if you plan on playing a lot of golf in the future, working at a golf course probably won't let you accomplish that

Don't work at a course. I'd say sales or marketing for a company like Acushnet or TM/Adidas. How do you get in the door is beyond me. I would say do some research on a small golf company and start sending resumes. I'm sure once you get in the door, you can begin a network through retailers and they can be your out source. Good luck. Personally though, golf should be a hobby not a lifestyle, unless you sleep, eat and breathe it, you could easily get burnt out.

Acushnet does interviews at Methodist College. We have many graduates that are working with them. You start out working with customer service for however many years until there is another opening and you are promoted. From my understanding you get a small area to cover at first if you want to be a rep for them. Then depending on your sales in that area you can move up to a bigger area and then a bigger area then that at the top level. Personally, I could not see myself sitting in a cubicle dealing with customer service for 2-5 years or however long it takes. Great opportunities but just not for me.

I would say find a golf course that will let you experience all aspects of the golf course. It's tough to say exactly what area you should go into. You just have to get out there and explore to find out. If you want to get a PGA membership, you can either attend a PGM/PGA university, or work on your PGA books at a golf course.

I was talking to a rep a couple weeks ago, he said he was a PGM student and an assistant in Colorado before he got hooked up with Callaway. We didn't really get into details though.

If you want to golf-golf try to get a job that pays a lot of $$$$$$, with travel and extra golf related perks. Or if you want to be surrounded by everything golf as your job, try to work for a major golf company like Titleist for example, you can either work on marketing, R&D, sales, accounting... it's really endless. Just don't put on the "golf only job" blinders because who knows what oppurtunities will come up with non-golf related occupations.

Ya we have had many students graduate our program working for courses, financial firms, design, working for the CPGA or CJGA.....its really endless and because here in Canada you also get a business degree to go along with your PGM it really opens non-golf doors as well.

If you want to stay within the game...work at a course or as a teacher, etc. If you just want to be in the industry the opportunities are endless.....
