Odyssey Marxman Review

pitch

Recommended Posts

I now have used the Odyssey Marxman Mallet for 5 rounds and several hours on the practice green. Over the last few years I have used many putters, as a lot of us have. Among them are 3 different Cameron models, a couple of Ping's, 2 Yes models and the Odyssey X7.

Odyssey Marxman Mallet:

Feel: the new Odyssey XG insert is awesome. I first tried it in the X7 model. It is the absolutely best feeling insert I've tried in a putter. The Marxman is quite simply the best feeling putter I've tried. Feel is soft but responsive. You can definitely tell if you mishit the putt. I tested both the blade and mallet Marxman. The mallet with the added weight feels more stable to me. But both are good. Balance is excellent

Alignment: Easiest putter to align of any I've tried. Blade is equal to the mallet. I have tried several putters with alignment aids but none are as easy as the Marxman, even the X7. I never could properly align the 2 Ball, but the Marxman is simple. I have tried putting a line on the ball to help with alignment. But with the Marxman putter I don't bother anymore. It's that easy to align the putter.

Distance Control: During the 5 rounds I played 3 different courses that had 3 different speeds of greens. Because of the feel of the Marxman it was very easy to adjust to the different speeds. From time to time I've had problems moving from course to course but a few putts on the practice green and the "touch" is there with this putter.

Accuracy: It almost feels like cheating. Alignment is so easy, balance is so good and the feel is so good that accuracy is not an issue. I've been making a lot more putts. Especially the midrange putts from 25 feet to 10 feet. Short putts are really good, again because of the ease of alignment.

Summary: Can you tell I like this putter?? It is going to be in the bag for a long time. I'm not even looking at anything else, the Marxman is that good. If you are interested in a putter that is simple to align and has great feel give the Marxman a try.

And if you do I hope it works as well for you as it is for me.

I was on the bandwagon at first...but after a few weeks I finally realized that I was just never going to get any distance control out of the XG insert. I love the look, love the alignment aid...a very good putter from 15 feet and in. But it was just horrible for me on lag putts.

Enter the Rife Barbados....similar look, similar alignment aid, 10 times the feel and control. Check it out, you won't regret it!

I tried the Marxman Mallet style. I thought it was great, but then in play there was just something about it that didn't click. I thought aligning it was easy, but I am a straight back and straight through putter, and I found it clunky on 6-10 footers that required a delicate touch. I went back the the 2 Ball XG White Hot, and I like it much better. he head doesn't feel like a spaceship on the 2 ball.

i have always been an odyssey hater, no clue why...not vocal about it, just mentally. "they all cant be that good," you know?

anyway, i tried the Marxman mallet in GG the other day, and i quickly feel in love. i loved how it rolled and felt on the carpet, but what is more misleading then the carpet?

so i immediately drove to the local private course that has demos out the ying yang.

the Marxman and the XG #9 have both quickly become my favorites out there.

i am currently using an old TPM Spalding 12 and the feel is great, but it just old. i have been looking for a Rossa Suzuka on ebay, and now i have quickly added the Marxman and XG #9 to my wish/want list...

enjoy guys!

Do they make the Marxman with the White Steel insert? I have never really been a fan of the White Steel insert, but after using my SRT White Steel for the past 6 months I have grown to really like this insert vs the White Hot or White Hot XG. But I do like the allignment aid of the Marxman over the 2 ball, it seems like a great improvement.

Good review, pretty much hit the nail on the head, knocked the Barbados out of the bag even though it is a great putter as well, this one is in the bag for the season.

I've never had any luck with lag putts with any of the Odyssey insert putters. I tried a regular 2-ball, 2-ball with the steel insert. One time I'd be 4' short, the next time I'd go by 6'. It was crazy!!!!

The problem I have found over the years with the odyssey insert putters (the steel inserts less so) is that they can be temperature sensitive. Cool one day and hot the next (20 degree difference for example 60-80) produces a very different feel and impact on the ball--affects distance control. While I like the Marxman it produces the same effect. Wish they made it in the steel insert as the alignment scheme is much better than that dated two and three ball scheme.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just picked this up over the weekend. Played my first 18. Well, long story short, I have a 9mo. old and I suffered a back spasm on the 10th tee. Ouch. Afterwards, I couldn't hit anything shorter than a 5 iron. Still out shot some buddies due to some great putting. Thought I might suffer the distance control issues that people have mentioned on this site seeing that I once had a 2 ball and suffered that same problem. Distance control was spot on. Alignment, easy. Give it a try if you're up to it.

Hmmm. Sounds like you two can't putt.

Played a marxman blade 2rds so far. I've been having putting issues for the past year, shooting 88's with 38-42 putts.

1st rd, 28 putts, lipped 2 out and left 1 just a hair short. 2nd rd, 33 putts, had 2 3 putts, not because of the putter but because they were very lengthy.

For me, great distance control, great alignment, a confidence booster

I tried out a Marxman blade and was surprisingly impressed...alignment was dead-on and it rolled the ball really well. Not sure if I'll buy one (yet) as I have too many putters, but I will say that I was impressed.

I've owned a 2-ball blade in the past and sold it because of inconsistancy with distance control. Now I own an XG-9 which I really like. I think the combination of the alignment aid and the XG insert make the Marxman a winner.

Tried blade and mallet, prefer the blade but still didn't get on great with it. Easy to align but there are better putters out there with a better feel, they will sell loads though and they will help a lot of golfers. I prefer a putter with less loft and one that will produce a better roll.

The Sabertooth is higher MOI and a better putter, in my opinion anyway

I dont know wat some of you are on about with the Marxman, i bought it 2 days ago and it is the best putter i have ever used. the review is spot on, everyone talking about the insert being very inconsistent in the way it comes off the face, the explanation is simple.

Your putting stroke is not the same everytime you have a putt...........

if your stroke was the same everytime it would go in the same general area.

anywho the marxman is a great putter and i recommend it to any golfer questioning the reliability of the putter in their bag.
