Scotty Cameron Custom Paint Fill

Matt_Matasy

Recommended Posts

I have been paint filling clubs for about a year now and I still haven't found a good method for painting the circles on a Scotty Cameron. I have heard a couple different methods such as using a paint bottle with a needle, using a tooth pick, and using a paint brush. I have tried all of these and the paint is left un-even or with small little bubbles. I have also heard a method of painting stickers with the same diameter of the circles. I couldn't find anything more on the process. Hoping to hear some advice!! Thanks!! Matt

Small round tip brush. Can be found at any hobby/model shop, Michael's, Joanne's etc.

Tiny drop of acetone in the dot will help the paint spread it around easily.

Do not apply the paint right after shaking the bottle or even stirring it. Just let it sit for a bit. That will decrease the likelihood of bubbles.

Also to get the edges of the circles, think of pushing the paint towards the edges rather than taking the brush all the way to the edge. You'll be surprised how much of the outer circle paints itself once you push a little paint there.

Here' a tour dot on a Byron of mine. Sorry about the terrible basement lighting.

Hey Matt, welcome to the forum, it's great to have Ya :)

I fill my Scottys(and every other club, lol), and after cleaning the preexisting red paint out, I use a fine permanent paint pen, depending on the color desired.

Looks good and even fooled a few guys that do it for real, lol.

The best to You and I hope that you enjoy the board.

Richard

[/quote]I'm sure you get this more often than you probably care to answer, but you have the closest paint job I have seen to an actual translucent Scotty paint job. So the question is, what kind of paint do you use?

Thanks.

For translucent colors I use Tamiya clear colors. I have clear red, clear blue and smoke which is kind of a clear black. I think they also have clear green and orange.

You can use a lot of different paints, I prefer to use model master paints instead of the tamiya stuff as I find that it pools better, with less bubbling or uneven spots. With Tamiya paints, I always had to use a little drop of acetone before applying the paint into a circle, whereas with the model master paint, I don't have to.

Additionally, they have a ton of pearl paints, with and without metal flake. You can put together some really cool stuff with a little practice.

This one's my wife's BB54, the colors pop like crazy in the sun.

This is Pearl blue metallic on a squareback. Nice and translucent, but with some flake in it.

This is their pearl red on the same squareback when I "put it back to red", no metal flake...it's almost a direct replacement for scotty's translucent red.

Here's 2 samples of what I've done with just a tooth pick. The paint is a "car" custom acrylic enamel paint my brother mixed up for me.

I started using a plastic micro brush they sell at Hobby Lobby. Cut off the end and it's like a long toothpick, only thicker. Much easier to control. I dip it in the paint to get a drop and put it in the middle of the circles. Add more drops and kinda tap up and down to spread the paint. Takes a little practice but won't have to clean around the dots after. A pack of 10 for 2 dollars.
