Don't let these idiots discourage you Noah! The links I posted above will prove to you that UCLA allows walk-ons to play on their golf team.

Most top men's programs don't have walk ons last few years becasue they are filled with recruits or non scholarship roster spots. Even where my son went which is considered a mid major ranked about 60th is not having walk on tryouts anymore becasue so many good players. It's worth inquiring but due to NCAA regulations Derek freeman cannot email you as it would be breaking the ncaa rules. You should see if they have a men's golf camp and if so try to go. They used to have these 1 day camps where you could meet coach tour
Campus and get a feel for the program.

[/quote]THIS is a great suggestion because at the very least, you will get to meet and get to know the Coaches, Players and see the facilities and program and while the bottom line is what you do with a club in your hand, Noah, there is not a doubt in my mind that when you introduce yourself and these Coaches and Players meet you, you will leave a positive and lasting impression.

You will have people in your corner hoping that you can achieve your dream and many will do everything that they can to assist you.

At the end of the day, it's your sticks that do the talking, however, right now you have to play your best "shot," and for you it is your personality, wit and the way that you carry yourself.

That will get your foot in the door and then it's up to you to bring your Game down to Par :)

As I said in your bag thread, I'll always be behind ya and believe in your dreams until you've either achieve them or tell me otherwise~

Stay Well My Friend,
Richard

I feel Agatha is being realistic about the whole junior golf situation. It's one thing for a mother to tell a 5-10 year old one thing, but once you reach high school age reality has to set in so you can plan for a real future. There are a lot of good juniors out there and only one things for sure, if you quit you'll never reach the goal. But there's also something to be said about learning and being open to what needs to be done. My oldest son doesn't play golf, he's a senior at UC Berkeley majoring in Astrophysics. When he was applying the average GPA at Berkeley is 4.0, so if you were trying to make it and didn't have close to that you probably had a slim chance of getting in much less being able to compete against students of that caliber every day. UCLA is not far behind Berkeley in academic demands.

So if you want to walk on, first take a realistic look if you can academically qualify to be admitted and also look at the fact that being an out of state student means you will be spending 50,000 per year just to go there.

I think the approach you must make first is to determine if you are a fit for the rigors of their academics first much less being able to make the golf team. If you have a 4.7 gpa, perfect SATs and also are a plus golfer, go for it, if you don't ,work on all those areas, but time is running out realistically for the top end schools.

colleges want more then just good grades and good golf scores I would think they want someone extremely passionate about the school and someone who represents the school well on a sense much past numbers and stats someone that works hard, does the right thing, motivates others to be there best self and most importantly someone that is a good person and appreciates the accolades and honor that the school has.... Sure golf scores will decide if I am or an not on the team and yes grades are very important (which I do very well in) but really just because you can shoot 65 or got a 1600 on your sat doesn't necessarily mean that those will be the most successful or be a better person

UCLA had 112000 applicants for about 11000 freshman spots. I think the point Agatha is making is that if you only target UCLA it will be like buying a lottery ticket, long odds. If you blanket a lot of different institutions, you improve your chance of playing golf in college versus not going to a college at all if rejected by the1 school you want to go to. Good luck.

You're getting a lot of good advice here. Aim high, work on your game and academics constantly but don't have your heart set on one school. Pick a large number of schools you'd be interested in attending and work hard enough and I have no doubt you'll play college golf somewhere. You have a lot of passion for the game and seem sharp. Best of luck young man

But still? But still what? I have been nothing but helpful from the get go, I never said you can't, I never said don't try, I never said anything quite frankly that you should be the least bit upset about. I have given you a very honest picture of what it takes to play division 1 golf at a top tier program. I have had multiple people tell me I should start a business regarding recruiting because of the knowledge and experience I have. But that does not interest me, I am not looking to make a buck on anyone. I sincerely want to help people if they ask for it. And my biggest thing is I don't think its beneficial to anyone to not be honest with them ever. Feel free to go back and re-read all of my posts to you and find one incident where I was anything but truthful and also tried to give you other options to consider. My son was a top player in the nation when he was ready to look at colleges and shooting regularly in the 60's and he was not opposed to other options, he wanted a place where he would play from the get go, a good tournament schedule and a college in a location he would be happy living in. That is all I have ever pushed. I hope you will come back here in 2 years and update us on your progress.

This reminds me a lot of myself. When i was 14 i was so set on ASU, I was shooting about the same scores as you are Noah at your age I realized as I got older a 77 average wasn't good enough for where I truly wanted to go, I am now playing at a smaller NAIA school and really enjoying it, Just keep your mind open and don't be disappointed if you don't reach your goal.

Just trying to learn how to putt.

You are all obsessing about the golf part and I guess that makes sense because this is a golf website...

My entire focus has been to build this kid's self-esteem and give him added motivation to keep working hard. Do you have any idea how many kids give up on their dreams when they are 10, 12, 14 years old because of people constantly shooting them down with harsh realities? Don't be THAT GUY. Don't be the internet tough guy who tells a 14 year old kid that he can't do something. I don't care if you're a man or woman. Mother or Father. Act like a decent human being and pat this kid on the back. It's not impossible for a 14 year old kid to do anything with his life. The hardest part about being that age is all the bad advice you get from adults who are supposed to be helping you. This thread is a perfect example of that. If there is still time on the clock the game isn't over. You don't give up on your dreams when you are a freshman in high school because there are child prodigies ahead of you who had overbearing parents like Agatha taking them to golf camps when they were 4 years old. There are a lot of late bloomers. In sports and especially in golf. Look at Zach Johnson! There are people on this board who claim to have beaten him in high school and college. Who cares? He has 2 majors and over 10 PGA tour wins now because he worked harder than all the "prodigies" who never amounted to s***. Hard work beats talent in a lot of cases.

Keep working hard Noah! Good things will happen brother. I promise.

I promise.

I think the tone here has been more supportive and telling him to aim high but ALSO don't rule anything out. There is nothing wrong with being a late bloomer and like I said going to a small school could let him hone his skills and play at a very high level one day. He should be extremely motivated and continue to work to make his dream come true but also never put all your eggs in one basket. Thats just good life advice in general.

Sorry to hurt your feelings but Noah clearly felt bullied by your comments on the first page and who could blame him? The negativity makes me cringe. That's why I came to his defense. His work ethic is amazing for his age. I'm trying to preserve that before he gives up and stops working so hard. Most parents are screaming at their kids to pay attention or stop playing video games. Noah wants to be student athlete at one of the best schools in the country. I respect the hell out of that. Which is why I've been preaching to him from the beginning that he should worry more about getting in academically than as a scholarship golfer. Do I need to throw out the old cliche that Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team? Even if his golf scores were low enough right now he'd still need to qualify academically. It doesn't hurt to try to walk on. If he can't, who cares? He still goes to his dream school and gets rewarded for working hard. My point is that nothing is impossible. Especially for a 14 year old kid.

I appreciate the apology but you didn't hurt my feelings, you made me angry because Noah and I are fine, he knows that I was just trying to share with him what it takes to make it to his goal and I wanted him to understand that there are a lot of other opportunities out there and he may find a better fit in one of those. I want him to have a positive and great college golf experience.
And FYI my husband and I did not push golf on our son at all.. I hated it when he wanted to play, he found the love for it himself and we just supported his desire. And we do know a lot about UCLA golf, a friend of my son went there, he quit the team, it was not a good experience for him. It might not be for Noah either which is why I want him to give thought to other places as he pursues his goals. That was the message and always has been.

Ok, once again, I'm late to the party, or donneybrook, though WTH, that's never stopped me before and I'm always good for gettin everyone up for round two, lol.

Regarding Noah, well, I think my posts speak for where I stand and that is behind him.

I would like to adress another individual since this member was attacked and drug through the mud for no apparent reason.

I am speaking of Agatha-

While Noah, and I will include myself here, do not agree with a few of her points, they came from her heart, they were sincere and meant to help Noah, not hurt him, and again, he is a very mature, and I hesitate to even use the word "boy" because he has carried himself as a dignified young man in this thread, disagreeing in a dignified manner and apologizing when his emotions started to get the best if him.

With regards to "bullying," all that I will say, and I do not believe for a second that Noah felt bullied, and I have made it my life's mission to defend those who truly are bullied, and to embarrass, humiliate and destroy, both literally and figuratively, the bullies that I encounter, wherever that may be, and I and those of you that have posted in here can recognize written/typed bullying and all that I will say is that if ANYONE finds any post in this thread "bullying" in nature, well, you've got greater issues than improving your golf game.

Regarding Agatha, as I've said both here and in ither threads, what initially drew me to her is the fact that She(and her husband) are as rare as parents today as their son is as a Player. Matthew Hansen is not the typical story of a college AA(and Tour Player), circa 2015. The Hansens do not, nor have they ever belonged to a country club, nor has Matthew ever been given, which happens in Pittsburgh at my club, Oakmont and others, a special membership for promising youth & Juniors. He was not an "Academy brat," as 100% of his middle and HS years were spent at a public school.

His parents did not coach, train, push or drag Matthew through the Junior ranks. As Aggs stated, early on at tournaments, having met these very parents and seen their children, many the spoiled brats and offspring, she was turned off and tried to turn Matthew's attention and efforts to the more traditional middle and HS sports such as soccer.

While I did not coach Golf, I did coach football, for 23 seasons, and I did not do it as a profession. I did it for the Love of the game and the children, from 10-12yo to HS. I stopped because of the parents. It was nauseating. However there is one fact that I observed. Those parents who went way beyond the boundaries of the typical parent of a child/HS athlete, those who in most cases were vicariously attempting to live through their children the athletic careers that they themselves did not have, produced children who, despite all of the interference from their parents, produced children who were mediocre at best, talent and ability wise, and maybe THIS is why these parents felt the need to "stand on roof tops" and attempt to do off of the field what their children could not do on it. And their counterparts, regardless of the sport, are the same way.

But Agatha and her husband were none of these. I know. I've spoken to FC's who played against Matthew and met Agatha. He is a Nationaly/Internatiionally renowned Mid-Am who met and spoke with Agatha, and he was struck with how "normal" and "laid back" and "pleasent" that she was. How she was truly there as a "Mother and not a super-agent or coach." And this Guy knows normal. His Parents did not even attend his first match until he was in college because his mother didn't understand the game and his father did not want to add any pressure to his son's life.

As I said, I am 100% behind Noah, and I presented my case for being so based on my life and experiences, both on the athletic fields and off.

However the day that I have to further my cause, beliefs or opinions by maliciously attacking and falsely defiling another individual in an attempt to give credibility to and further my views, well, you all will have seen me for the last time.

Keep swing Noah, and Aggs, keep the Faith, there's way more of us than there are them, and you and your son represent the best that this Game has to offer :)

And Noah, your Parents have done an impeccable job of raising a Gentleman, and this is my highest compliment for a Male, regardless of age. I have no doubt that you have been taught this however if I had to give a Boy 3 bits of advice to carry to his grave, this would be #1. Please do not EVER lash out, in ANY manner at a Girl or Lady. Nomatter the situation. There will ALWAYS be a second option available to you. ALWAYS take that option. And trust me Bud, I've been there. Believe me I have. But you bite your tongue, to the point of it bleeding if need be, and you turn and walk away or exit the situation immediately. Once you cross that line, be it orally or God forbid physically, it only gets easier to rationalize the second and ensuing times!!

My Very Best to Ya :)

As Always,

Fairways & Greens My Friends,
Richard

In the end, only three things matter~

How much that you loved...

How mightily that you lived...

How gracefully that you accepted both victory & defeat...

GHIN: Beefeater 24

Sorry but this post made hot lava start pouring out of my ears. Spare me the life story, Richard. You and Agatha are friends outside of WRX. We get it.

We might as well agree to disagree and I'll be on my way back to the BST. Buying and selling clubs instead of talking golf with a bunch of CRAZY PEOPLE.

Good luck Noah! My best advice is to study hard and never lose that awesome work ethic. You already have what it takes to be successful in golf but also life in general. Hit a million practice balls every morning. It's never too early to prep for the SAT either. Feel free to PM or Email me anytime buddy.
