Most Overrated Course

Of the courses that I have played that others would have heard of, TPC Southwind (Memphis) was the most disappointing. After leaving the course, I couldn't remember a few of the holes and the maintenance of the course was what you would find and most good public courses in your home town.

Disclaimer: I believe they have remodelled the course since I played there, so things may have changed.
No remodeling or redesign that I know of. Just a conversion from bent to bermuda greens some years ago. Otherwise, I'm not aware of anything different from the course that John Cook smoked to the tune of a 54 hole scoring record to the one where now the 72 hole winning score is usually around -10.

The Ocean Course at Kiawah is better than Pebble Beach and has more seaward holes. It's also more difficult.

There. I said it.

I know many people who agree and few who disagree personally.

If you haven't played both, your vote doesn't count.
More seaward holes? There were only like 3 or 4 holes that you could even see the ocean on at Kiawah. I agree though, Kiawah was harder. Kiawah has less boring holes. My only problem is, the great holes at pebble are truly breathtaking. Truly incredible golf holes. Kiawah, while an absolutely fantastic golf course, didn't have that wow factor to me. Like I said in my earlier post, I love Kiawah. I think it's great. It has probably 15-16 very very good golf holes. Just IMO it didn't have any incredible golf holes. Pebble has 6 or so incredible holes and 12 above average holes.

If given equal price for greens fees, I'd take pebble nearly every time... At $500 for pebble and $300 for Kiawah... I'm taking Kiawah 70% of the time.

I'll get grief for this, but Quintero is way overrated IMO.
No grief from me. I agree with you.

I'll bite. Must not have been hitting the driver straight. There are some things to complain about (similar club in hand on all the Par 3s), but all in all that is a spectacular track. One is hard pressed to find better golf in the Phoenix area for public consumption. It competes with the best tracks out here (Southern Dunes, Troon North, Greyhawk, WeKoPa) and is never over priced like several on that list.

Yeah I thought Quintero was spectacular. The par 3's were pretty redundant but other than that I thought it was great.

However, if I lived in Phoenix, I would never play sans special occasions (friends traving in). While the course is very cool, it's kind of gimmicky at the same time and I'm not sure I would want to play it regularly.

Trum LA by far. Like someone previously mentioned. You can stripe one down the middle and end up in jail. No way in the world would I pay 280.00 to play it. I have a coupon to play for 150.00 and I'm not going to use it.

I've always felt Cog Hill #4 was overrated.
This.

I also thought Pinehurst #2 was overrated. I played it last year, it was nice and fun to play, but I doubt I'd drop another $500 to play it. I didn't feel like it was that memorable. Whereas I played Whistling Straits and kept looking around and couldn't believe I was in Wisconsin. Some of the views at that place were incredible.

Played Doral last year... it's overrated for a $495 price tag that's for sure.

Here is the problem, many of you are comparing the price you played to how you rate the course. I played #2 and Pebble on someone elses dime....loved them both.

Pebble is a bit of a let down once you step onto the 11th tee... having just played the most breath taking and famous stretch of golf in the world. You finish pretty strong on 17 and 18, but even 18 doesn't seem as cool in real life as it does on TV. Still everyone should play it once, it's a great experience. So I don't think it's overrated, it's just that some holes are so spectacular that the others pale in comparison. Still the history and experience of the place is something any golfer should appreciate.

#2 is 18 of the finest golf holes on an single course I have played. Nothing really jumps out at you, there are no mountains, there is no water, no major elevation changes. Just 18 holes that appear to be no harder than most courses you play at first site. When you combine the fact that Donald Ross spent his life perfecting the layout and the history of the place it is very special. If you really think about he architecture...bunker placements, the green complexes, the strategy needed to play each hole properly I think it is almost the perfect course. It is very playable for a high handicapper and challenging for a pro, fairways are easy to hit but the bunkers are placed in a way that you should flirt with them to attack the green, if you play safe you have a tough angle, much like the Old Course.

In my opinion the most overrated courses are any designed by Jack Nicklaus. I love Jack the player but his courses are all predictable, par 5's are generally reachable for long hitters, par 4's are generally barely reachable for average hitters, the greens are overly sloped with huge contours. Tons of forced carries and because his name is on it they cost $50 more to play than they should. I have played several of his courses and none of them blow me away.

I understand what you're saying, but I didn't pay a dime to play any of the courses I listed....and to me they (Doral & Poppy Hills) were still vastly overrated.

The only complaint I had about Pebble was that the greens were SLOW. But considering their tee sheet is stacked literally every single day, and the views the course provides, pace of play would be 6 hours if they cut them much shorter.

I do agree with your assessment of Nicklaus courses though. I've never been a big fan of his designs. Too many dog leg rights for a guy who likes to play a high draw. To be fair though, most courses designed in the last 20 years don't do a whole lot for me (generally speaking). Courses today are built way too long and way too challenging for the average player.

You may be right. Every year when I watch the tourney, they talk about how the course is 'different' so I assumed it was redesigned.

The Ocean Course at Kiawah.

It was good, but not great, and certainly not Top 20 in the USA. I have played $50 public tracks in Nebraska that are better.

The most overrated course that I have played since I took up golf again is Old Corkscrew outside of Naples. It is a Nicklaus design and it is exactly like you describe. I had no trouble getting around it from the tippy tips even though I accidentally grabbed the wrong driver leaving the house (10.5º instead of my usual 6º) and didn't hit a long drive all day. They had also punched the greens poorly probably a couple weeks before I played it and the greens rolled like crap. I didn't make a putt outside of 6 feet all day. On the 16th I missed a 12 footer and had enough. I pulled the putt back five times, and didn't make any of them. Each one missed differently too. It was like playing a muni. I thought the layout was rather bland. It basically looked like just about every other course here in the swamp. Little bit of roll on the fairways and elevated greens. Miss the fairway and you are in the jungle. Nothing special about it. Courses in Fl tend to be all the same though. I miss growing up playing golf in the MidWest. Courses had character.

This may be sac religious to some but Torrey and Spanish Bay, IMO.

Spanish Bay was the epitoMe of target golf and that is not my favorite, but I thoroughly enjoyed Spyglass on the other hand.

Now Torrey, IMO, was a bunch of utterly forgettable holes with 2 or 3 scenic holes thrown in. If it wasn't on the coast would it be talked about at all?

I thought Spanish bay was pretty weak as well. Then again I played it just before playing Spyglass, Pebble and Cypress so ultimately it just got completely forgotten haha.

For the poster who said Jack courses.. I completely agree. It's probably why I hate the Ohio State course which he redesigned. The only exception I have is Muirfield Village. That is a excellent golf course. It's not just a masterpiece for him, it's simply a masterpiece for any golf design.

I would also vote Spanish Bay and Torrey Pines. Great post-round environment at Spanish Bay.

Sahalee is also incredibly overrated. I have always thought there are 9 good holes throughout the whole property... the other 18 are pretty average. Typically, it's in great shape though. It's not even in my top 10 for the entire state (ouch).

I can see how Wolf Creek would be voted as overrated. It should probably be voted as more fun than highly rated.

Torrey South, when it is not in tournament condition becomes a very overrated $250 difficult muni (from a non resident standpoint)

In AZ Pre 2015 renovation TPC Scottsdale hands down most over rated track in the state. Renovation came out very good and it is an enjoyable track now.

AZ state rankings wise I agree Quintero very over rated.

Torrey South has to win this argument. I would throw the other muni across the country in the mix as well in Bethpage Black. They just made long, narrowed in courses by the rough with small greens. The designs are very ordinary. Spyglass has to be one of the biggest let downs I've experienced in a while. And this is going to be blasphemy to say but Pine Valley is up there as well. Was so pumped for that first trip and was so let down. Coming off 18 I couldn't believe that was the course I was so excited about.

Paiute wolf course. Probably the most recommended to me before I went to Vegas. Not amazing shape considering the price. Nothing unique besides a remake of Sawgrass 17, but how many if those exist? They had to make theirs play 190 though good luck holding that With a strong tailwind. Every hole is just pure brute. Flat, windy and if you're just a bit off you'll find yourself in rock desert shiz. Hated every minute of that course.

maybe some people are talking about overpriced courses, rather than overrated ones.

Pebble Beach is overpriced, but I think it's a very good course and not overrated. Holes #7, 8, 9 and 18 are world class, and even the 'weakest' of the rest are still good. (I haven't played it since the recent renovation of #17, but photos of the new green look fine.)

I agree with Oregongolf that Sahalee (north / south) is overrated. (I don't think it's overpriced, because a buddy and I paid $200 to play it.)

For me, Sherwood Country Club is overrated.

I tend to think they go hand in hand. They can charge the price they do because of the rating they have. I stand by Pebble being overrated - it is not in the top ten public courses in the US for me - making it (in my mind) at least 10-25 spots too high on most lists. Having said that - if you can play it once. It well worth one visit for sure.

Now if the question was overrated golf 'experiences' I would actually have pebble as underrated and it is a great place to spend some time.

Torrey Pines South. Been there done that for me. And I didn't have to pay much as it was a tournament.

Wolf Creek in Mesquite. I live 30 minutes from it and it is a "Once a year" type of course for me. It is fun to take people there for the first time though. Not unlike taking them to an Amusement Park.

PGA West Stadium. I used to play it a couple of times every summer for free when I lived in Palm Springs and there is no way I'd pay the $$ they charge for it.

Ha! Love it. I happen to agree with you. Of any course on the entire Monterey Peninsula, the most overrated is Spyglass Hill AT THE RACK RATE.. Holes 1-4 define the place then you're playing Poppy Hills but you're paying near Pebble prices. Duke's Club price is easier to justify but really, can anyone here honestly recall a single hole on the back nine that stands out as sheer genius or even half memorable? If you can you're a liar. I've played it 6 times and while nice, I can't wait to finish so I can leave and go eat somewhere. The pro shop is a 2 foot by 3 foot cardboard box. My a$$ sticks out the front door while I'm paying my green fee.
