Best putter you ever saw - what putter did they use?

The best putter I've ever seen is the man that I've finished runner up to in the passed three club championships, and play with/against him pretty much every weekend. He has a weird setup and plays the ball towards to toe of the putter and has a loop to it. It's really cool to see him get on a roll. He putts with...my old Ping G2i Piper I sold to him. Almost makes you feel bad when someone beats you with your old club!

I remember playing with a member at my course that used a milled Ray Cook Blue Goose. His putting was so pure, it looked like the blade and ball stayed together much longer than most. Put a tremendous roll on the ball, always made me envious.

Wish I could have felt, what he was doing.

The best I ever saw/played with was a guy who had a home made putter, this was probably 8-9 years ago. He told me he made it himself, he was a retired auto engineer.

He putted side sadle, facing the hole with the putter on his side. He had some sort of weird bent angle long shaft, and probably some golfsmith mallet type head attached. His putting motion was basically like pitching horse shoes with his right hand, his shaft at the end was almost vertical. He held the top of the putter with his left, with the thumb on top, the shaft angled quite sharply just above where he held it in his right hand so that the top of the putter hit him right in the middle of his chest.

Like this, but with a bent shaft.....

fosetupwlabel.jpg

He played to a mid single digit handicap, but that was because he was probably an 18 handicap tee to green, but on the green, he made almost everything inside of 20 feet, it was amazing. I played him in a handicaped match play tournament. When I saw him swing then hit on the first tee, I though there must have been a mistake, he is in the wrong flight or something, until we got on the green. I did beat him, but it went 19 holes, I stiffed an 9 iron from a fairway bunker to make a birdie and win the match, but he had a putt that could have pushed it, but missed from long distance...

wow...that seems really, really odd. It would be really interesting to try though. I imagine it allows for better perception on the shot, and wouldnt be so weird to be consistent with practice.

Back in 1995/96 or so, a 10 handicapper from our club tried to qualify for the Dave Pelz World Putting Championship with a long-handeled side-saddle putter just like the old boy pictured. Well guess what... the guy wins our club qualifier, then the state championship and then in the finals against the 49 other state champions and also a group of tour pros he finishes like 14th or 15th. Truely an amazing feat...

Don, are you still out there somewhere ?

My friend, who did so well in the World Putting Championship was Don Iverson. He passed away in 2010 at the age of 74... he was quite a guy.

Here's a photo of Don putting...

The best putters I've known all use a Zing style whether it's a Ping or other manufacturer. They all used that style. I also putted my best with a Ping Redwood Zing.

There were a couple of other Zing-style mentions in this thread, so maybe there's something to that. One of my college teammates was extremely consistent with an old Ping Zing 2.
When I think of people who are great with the flatstick, it's not because I remember them making a ton of bombs--it's that they make a huge percentage inside 10-12 feet. He scored well when he had better than average ballstriking days.

My Dad.

He played in college, smaller guy and learned to swing out of his shoes to keep up, so that lead to some iffy mechanics hitting the ball. Majority of the time used a Ping A-Blade. Open stance, toe off the ground, forward press, took it way inside then looped it back to the inside on the way through, kind of like Faxon but more exaggerated and more pop. The ball rolled perfectly. Didn't really appreciate it growing up but I can confidently say I haven't seen many others roll it as well as he can. Tour players included.

Two points though.
1) He told me all he ever worries about is rolling the ball properly, doesn't care if it goes in or not...Sure enough thats all I read in Rotella books once those came out.
2) He said the best putter he's ever seen was a guy who would take a normal putter and hold it perfectly vertical looking down the shaft, almost like when you see guys on TV check their clubs after hitting roots to see if the shaft is bent. Heel was a mile off the ground but supposedly it worked wonders. Also the only person I've ever heard him admit putts better than he does.

My old buddy "Raymona" passed away about 6 years ago. He putted with a Ping O-blade and I have never seen a purer roll put on a golf ball in my life. He would point both index fingers down the side of the grip and he used the smoothest wristy stroke you could ever imagine. He started to lose a few teeth as he got older and every time he'd roll in one of his classic bombs, he would just giggle and show that toothless grin of his. Best guy and best putter I've ever seen.

A guy at my old park district course in his 50s used many different putters but was always deadly with the putter. He used everything from brass bullseyes to newest designs. He was in my group in a tourny and seriously had 21 putts. Some where from great approaches and some were just bombs. He stands slightly open and is very wristy but consistent on all greens he plays.

Best putter I have seen was my friends uncle. I played with him once. Anywhere on the green he would say "watch this go in boys" or "open your eyes ladies it going in". No matter if it was 40 feet, or 10 feet they all just seemed to drop. He had 21 putts for 18 holes!!! He used a Scotty Cameron Bullseye he won at his club like 10 years ago.

Joe Johnson was a Tour Pro back in the 50's and 60's and he taught me the game. He was lights out on Bermuda Greens using an old Darby Blade. He had a "real" 8802 that I was given when he passed away but I never saw him use anything but the old Darby.
It was an absolute pleasure watching him read and stroke a putt. What a gentleman and steward of the game. I miss him everytime I tee it up.

The answer to better golf is hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Best putter I know is my old swing coach. He's an amazing player all around but on the greens it's a whole new level. He uses a PING G5 Craz-E

I see this old thread was revived. When it was originally posted it was before my WRX days. I have been around and played golf with a lot of great players. the best putter I ever saw was an old hustler at my old man's course named Charlie Simpson. He has been long gone I think he passed around 74 or so. Putted with an old Bullseye and arced putted too. Absolutely the best money putter I have ever seen on any green made no difference to him. Someone mentioned the Zing 2 In my heyday I used the same Zing 2 for over 20 years. Now days I use a rusty Scotty Santa Fe that literally came off the junk pile at work. ( I work for a metal recycling company) Lead taped and rusty. The Scotty putter Brad Faxon games looks like a showpiece compared to mine. Mine has a nickname down here as "That Rusty SOB Scotty". I still practice some with one of my Bullseyes and they will let you know if you are stroking it right or not trust me.

Can't believe i'm the first to say it.....But surely this topic is back-to-front ? A good putter could use anything - you could argue.

Surely we should be encouraging a S**t-list of equipment the most truly awful 4 and 5 jabbers you've ever come across used.

I mean some of the shapes they make, the awful strokes they thrust into the deepest, darkest crevices of our mind; and lets not forget the tools they choose to inflict upon us could be contagious.....

The best putters I run into in tournaments usually have a putter that is beat up with chrome flaking off the shaft. I usually am put to shame when they ask man, thats a nice looking putter. What is it? I cant putt but I like to make an impression before I show them I cant putt.

My old Bullseye putter has yellow crime scene tape over wrapped with clear packing tape to hold the leather wrapping at both the top & bottom of the grip.

People think I'm some type of rube....so, I always like to accommodate them out of their cash

A friend of mine who played mini tours was the greatest putter I had ever seen. What was crazy was his putting stroke. Had his feet WIDE apart, ala Moe Norman swinging a club. Massive forward press and then it looked like he was 'looking up' before impact. He also putted very firmly, but his consistency in his speed was remarkable.

Unfortunately, I cannot remember what he putted with. We've lost contact with each other so I can't ask him.

Other than that, I would probably go with David Orr who now uses a Scotty Cameron Napa putter. He was also fooling around with a sweet, custom made TaylorMade putter as well.
