Dove Mountain - pretty forgettable layout with the exception of a couple decent holes
Grayhawk raptor - even more forgettable than dove mtn
PGA national - eh

As for the wolf creek comments, I don't really consider it golf so much as an experience. Fun to play but it's completely ridiculous. I wouldn't call it overrated, just really don't know what to call it

Understand when people say Pebble and Torrey Pines are overrated.

I would play them again however.

One course I would never replay is Doral Blue Monster. Mind you, I played before the renovation. Left me feeling ripped off with what they were charging for a very average parkland course.

I haven't felt that about any other course I've experienced.

I am going to go with Pinehurst #2....and that is not in anyway influenced by what I did or didn't pay to get on :)

It looks great on TV and in photos. It was great fun being there watching the women play there at the US Open but...when you stand on the tees there's just something that does not fit my eye. It's not that it's a real tough driving course but for me I just did not like or enjoy the sight lines. A lot of times I stood on the tee and thought "meh". Add the fact that the greens contours are famously border-line silly it just added up to a deeply uninspiring and unenjoyable day. I am probably not going to get many to agree but I would say say that Pinehurst #8,and Dormie Club are better courses. Maybe even #4 as well,,,

Honorable local mention goes to Salem CC. Bar 2 or 3 holes it's totally underwhelming and over-rated.

Easy: SPYGLASS HILLS. Two interesting holes in the dunes and then it's basically Poppy Hills II through the woods. Will never go back.
Spyglass Hill, not Hills

I'm sorry to be such a stickler but it is one of my pet peeves when people do not correctly spell the names of golf courses. Especially the one's here in California.
Spyglass Hill. Thanks for giving me the chance to say it sucks twice.
Ha! Love it. I happen to agree with you. Of any course on the entire Monterey Peninsula, the most overrated is Spyglass Hill AT THE RACK RATE.. Holes 1-4 define the place then you're playing Poppy Hills but you're paying near Pebble prices. Duke's Club price is easier to justify but really, can anyone here honestly recall a single hole on the back nine that stands out as sheer genius or even half memorable? If you can you're a liar. I've played it 6 times and while nice, I can't wait to finish so I can leave and go eat somewhere. The pro shop is a 2 foot by 3 foot cardboard box. My a$$ sticks out the front door while I'm paying my green fee.
It's a classic case where you step on the course with high expectations and then walk off disappointed. I didn't help that the starters and others were hyping it as the best course on the peninsula, which is a joke. I've played them all (on the peninsula), and this is probably the worst of the bunch (which is better than a lot of courses). It's just not worth $400, or whatever it costs to play it. I'd go back there if I had to, but I didn't enjoy the course.

I can't agree with you on #2. One of my favorites I have played. I will absolutely agree with you on Dormie, #4 and #8 being great tracks also. #2 gets all the attention and fanfare but the surrounding area at Pinehurst has 6 or 7 of the best courses I have ever played.

One more overrated course. The Scarlet course at Ohio State. It's fairly highly ranked in the state of Ohio. I can't for the life of my understand the allure to the course. All the course is, is a old design that was remodeled (because it wasn't very good in the first place). All the redesign did was lengthen the course to make it actually difficult and build some of the most rediculously large green complexes I have ever seen. The course is just super long, with huge greens that run really quick and a mix of large bunkers. Nothing more to it. Almost every hole looks the same and each of those are simply mediocre. I'm left shaking my head everytime I hear someone rave about it. I don't enjoy courses that are just long and straight with little else to them.
Just goes to show how subjective and personal this stuff is, because Scarlet has always been one of my very favorite layouts. Hardly just "long and straight" in my view, and the par-3s there are phenomenal IMO. Each to his own, obviously.

My own "overrated" list includes Caledonia (a very popular course, so I know this is very personal) and the Old Course at The Homestead. Caledonia is to me claustrophobic - very short, very tight, though extremely pretty - and the Homestead course is just kind of meh.

I also think Scioto CC is a little dull as a layout, though the overall experience of playing there is very special. The history, especially - playing where Jack grew up - brings chills to the avid golfer. But as for my favorite Ross layouts I'd put both Inverness and Pinehurst #2 well above it.

Not as big a name as some of the other courses that have been discussed but I'll say that Disney's Magnolia Course was an utter disappointment in my eyes. Orlando golf is usually pretty solid and given the PGA Tour's stop there, I had high expectations. I have a really hard time remembering many of the holes out there, nothing gave me the "wow factor" when I was playing it, and it was way too crowded (It is a Disney course, I get that). Certainly not on my repeat list for Orlando golf.

I couldn't disagree with you more on Somerset Hills...I would go as far as to say it is the most UNDERRATED course I have ever played
I didn't think the entire front nine was very special at all. I enjoyed the back nine more. The clubhouse and pro shop was a joke. I understand a minimalist philosophy, but they just looked like garbage to me.

The conditioning was fantastic, but I've just seen far better courses out there that if it Ron Garl had designed it instead of AW Tillinghast...nobody cares.

i agree with pawleys plantation and cog hill dubsdread overrated and Cog at $160 is way overpriced as well....I liked Quintero and Tullymore very much...which some have ripped on...don't see that they have the same rep as (Tournament courses, etc) being incredible so you would be the most disappointed in your life after round.

Wolf Creek in mesquite. By far the most overrated dump I've played. My dad said pebble was overrated when he played there.
only because you couldn't break 100
Shot 71 first time there from back tees. Good try though. You must have struggled yourself... The course is a pitch and putt if you find the fairway. Extremely easy after you find grass.

Edit.. Not a fan of target Canyon golf. Plus the greens were covered in ball marks and bunkers had no sand.

Augusta is a very overrated course in my opinion. I think it's image and history overshadow the actual course which isn't all that special in my eyes. I know it's on most golfers bucket list but I'd honestly decline the invitation to play there if I was ever offered.

I second St Andrews.

Without "weather" the Pros would kill it at any length and the winning score would be -30, the cut probably around -10.

Only memorable hole was the Road Hole. And a drivable 100 yard wide finishing hole ? Sheesh.

I get it's the home of golf and all and that in itself makes it historical but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Trum LA by far. Like someone previously mentioned. You can stripe one down the middle and end up in jail. No way in the world would I pay 280.00 to play it. I have a coupon to play for 150.00 and I'm not going to use it.

Totally agree. Have no idea how this makes GD top 100 public list. All gimmicks and on a piece of land not big enough for a golf course. Might have been able to fit 13 good holes there, but not 18

The Ocean Course at Kiawah.

It was good, but not great, and certainly not Top 20 in the USA. I have played $50 public tracks in Nebraska that are better.
Nebraska must be the most under rated golf state in the country! I have played a bunch of the top 100 courses and Kiawah is right at the top. Great mix of short and long holes with strategy and wind in the mix. I suggest you give it another try.

I'm with you on Whistling Straits. But not due to conditioning. I thought it was in great shape when we were there last summer. I just didn't love the design. I thought it was completely overdesigned and a bit unnecessary and ridiculous at times. I thought some of the overdesigning done by Dye actually ended up taking away from the course at times. It's one of the few great golf courses (at least by ratings) that I walked away from thinking I was glad I played it once but not sure I care to play it again.
Funny you say that, yesterday I was talking about WS and Pete Dye in general and the term that came to mind when describing his courses was "ridiculous". Almost seems like he is making holes that are over the top and ridiculous as opposed to thinking about making good golf holes. Just look at 18 at WS. Looking back at the fairway from the green it looks like the worms from the movie Tremors must live under the fairway. I feel like Dye was more concerned with making holes difficult and gimicky and that will look crazy on tv vs making holes that are challenging, but rewarding and flow together with the rest of the course.

I played WS once and I didn't walk off the course thinking about how much I wanted to get another shot at it. I was just happy I survived. Other great courses, I find myself wanting to go back and replay it with knowledge I learned the first time around. With WS it seemed like the whole focus of the round was trying to avoid the sure triple bogeys that existed on either side of the fairways.
This echoes my feelings exactly.

I will say, I played The Ocean Course about a month after WS and thought it was a brillant track. Nothing crazy, nothing absurd, just a handful of flat out great golf holes. It's one of the only Dye courses I have walked away thinking not only do I want to play it again but I could play it everyday.

One more overrated course. The Scarlet course at Ohio State. It's fairly highly ranked in the state of Ohio. I can't for the life of my understand the allure to the course. All the course is, is a old design that was remodeled (because it wasn't very good in the first place). I'm left shaking my head everytime I hear someone rave about it. I don't enjoy courses that are just long and straight with little else to them.
I think Scarlet is highly rated only in the minds of old timers, Buckeye fans and Nicklaus lovers.

I felt like The Prince course at the Princeville Resort in Kauai and Sahalee CC in Seattle were very overrated. Princeville seemed like gimmicky target golf and all the holes at Sahalee seemed the same. The conditioning at both courses (especially Sahalee) were fantastic. I just wasn't a fan of either layout.

I was very surprised to see two people mention Hazeltine as being overrated. I loved Hazeltine. But, as Dalton astutely observed in Roadhouse, "Opinions vary."

My contribution to this thread isn't a $300+ course, but I played Pacific Grove Golf Links for the first time today since my home course was closed. Known as the "Poor Man's Pebble Beach," I found that the course was just 7 holes in the ground with a view of the coastline.

And the fact that they don't have a drop of drinking water on the course just made it tough for me to like the place.

Oakland Hills South Course. I guess I was just expecting more considering all the U.S. Opens, PGA Champs, and Ryder Cup that were played there. It was a very nice club, just not sure why it gets all those majors.
Same vein, different venue: Medinah #3 tops my list. I'd rather get a colonoscopy than play there again. Long, straight, tree-lined holes, back and forth. Difficult and bland. And the place is a factory.
