Tin Cup movie

Golf Channel has been showing Tin Cup during primetime over this Labor Day weekend. Every time I hear Jim Nance say "Roy McAvoy" I hear "Rory McIlroy". It's driving me crazy.

This movie does a great job portraying the contrasting styles of players. McAvoy is talented but mentally fragile, yet when given the right conditions can thrive. He plays to break records and winning and losing is a byproduct. Simms is talented as well and he represents your successful stock tour pro. Yet, he can't get past his conservative nature to allow himself to win big events. He plays to give himself a chance to win or at least place high, and records and glory is a byproduct. Don Johnson is the man. When he hustles McAvoy by hitting the 7 iron down the road, he became the protagonist of the film for me.

I don't pay the big bucks for first run movies in a theatre but I did for Tin Cup. That last hole at the open was very painful for me the first time I saw it. Still hurts every time I watch it and it has been a few times. "You need to be thinking 7 iron!!!"

Has anyone ever noticed that Mcavoy tells sims that he missed a 3 footer on 18 for an 81 but later they reference him being able to save par despite going in the hazard on 18 all four days?
I did notice that too. And the "I missed a putt on 18" is an old stock line often attributed to Arnie I think.

That's my least favorite thing about Tin Cup, all the cliches from decades of golf banter that made it into the dialogue.

How about ONLY three golf movies: Caddyshack, Happy Gilmour, and Tin Cup.

Get ready, I'm sure they'll be on steady rotation during the silly season.

The majority of the movie was filmed at the clubs of Kingwood in TX. Pretty cool to play the fourth hole at the Deerwood course there which is the iconic hole in the film where he's trying to carry the water to the green. It's actually a par 4 and one hell of a hard hole. I've played the course probably 50 times and I'm sure my average is close to 5.1 on the hole.

The do have a small little plaque on the right side of the fairway that denotes "the spot" that McAvoy keeps trying to go for it from. They also have a Pelican on the post in the water outside of the clubhouse at the Kingwood courses. Pretty neat homage to the film if you notice it.

Don Johnson as Dave Simms, not sure if he's acting or portraying real life.
After seeing Don Johnson in Miami Vice and Nash Bridges, I'm under the conclusion that Don Johnson is simply too cool for acting. Take it or leave it, Don Johnson is the man.
