Had a great meal at The Black Pig in downtown Sheboygan - best of the trip. Good beer list there as well.
My wife and I at there last Wednesday. Had the exact opposite feelings about the restaurant. We were excited to try it based on a lot of the reviews, but both of our meals were just so-so. They have a lot of unusual sounding menu items, but flavor was just not that great. Was my least favorite meal of the trip.

Is it worth playing whistling straits a second time & paying an additional $400 or stick to the free replay round at the meadows thatwe get with the diabolical package?
Meadow Valleys wasn't all that impressive to me. It was nice, don't get me wrong, but I'd rather play Straits or Irish.
Booked the straits on Monday @2:00, the day we get there. Only playing the meadows once. So playing straits twice, meadow once, river once & Irish twice....
You can replay any of the Kohler courses if you've played any other Kohler course first. So, if you play the Straits after playing the River ,or the Irish, you still get the replay rate. Don't have to pay full rate.
My diabolical package includes free replay rounds on the Meadows and Irish courses only.
But for seriously less money than full price you can reply the River and the straits. I did that several times in may when I was there. Played 36 almost every day I was there (and 54 twice).

Personally the meadows isn't much and like others I prefer the River to the Irish. But if I'm at the straits facility and don't feel up to playing straits again, I will play the Irish for free. That's a reasonable deal to me. I did the same thing at Blackwolf and played the river in the morning and the meadows in the afternoon and then played the river again.

Caddys are good and bad. One this time was same one i had three years ago and was exceptional. I only had one that i got rid of after one round. Others were ok. Last two times has been the same caddy.

Anyone going to Kohler needs to figure out a way to eat at River Wild. It's a private dining club that is in a log cabin. It's set back in the woods near the River course and is right there on the river. It's a very cool place. They have a one page menu with maybe 5 entrees to chose from each night. We kind of had a hook up to get in there but someone did tell us the American club has some select reservations they can get you the day of.

It's a bit pricey but the food is outstanding and the experience alone is worth it. Apparently they set each table in the cabin one time per night. So no turning tables, nothing like that. Just one setting per night at each table. I would talk to the concierge when you get there to see if they can hook you up. It's a pretty cool spot and it's very unique.

Also, take the 10 minute drive to Sheboygan and eat at Stefanos. Great italian food and it's reasonably priced. I liked it better than anything we ate at the American club.

Definitely Stefanos! Also, Horse & Plow has an awesome bison burger - quick food in the American Club facility. Kohler's a fantastic golfing/resort experience!

So I guess I was the only who didn't like the River course? It was in great shape for sure but I just hated the layout in general. Felt very gimmicky and even forced at times. I liked the Irish a lot more. The layout on the Irish wasn't spectacular but I thought it was a very fun course to play.

I ranked the courses on that trip as 1. Erin Hills (and for me it was a distant #1), 2. Straits, 3. Irish, 4. River.

Caddies will all be pretty good, they are the #1 caddie force in the nation and very proud of it. My caddie on they Irish course was mortified when I removed a pin myself. I told him I really didn't mind and he told me that's not the point.

I played in mid July last year and conditions were excellent, but we just played the straits courses not the Blackwolf Run courses. The Blackwolf courses actually appeared to the eye to be in better shape than the straits courses, and I've had a few people tell me since that they are actually the better tracks, particularly the River Course.

Don't miss Stefanos, maybe grab a reservation for dinner on your way back from the Straits courses as Sheboygan is in between the straits facilities and Kohler. The food is excellent and one of the better meals I had anywhere when I was out there last.
Sorry, don't mean this to be argumentative but am honestly curious, what makes them the No. 1 caddie force in the nation?

That's pretty generous especially with some of the caddie's out there. I would imagine a place with year round golf and caddies would be have the best caddies or maybe Whisper Rock which i believe has the lowest average club handicap.

Whistling Straits has an excellent caddie program, but I personally would not put it ahead of the caddies at Erin Hills.

Streamsong, Bandon and [a little in left field compared to the first two] Madden's Resort in Brainerd, Minnesota have been the others that I have been over-the-top impressed with, but if we're talking Wisconsin I'd give the edge to Erin Hills.

Who else is typically known to have the country's best caddie programs? I think Bandon gets the best because Keiser allows employees to play for free whenever they're not working - to a person, it's the one thing you'll hear over and over about their favorite part of working there.

Personally I was thinking of the Bandon caddies and conversations I had with them. I know there is 1 or 2 that go to Whisper Rock for the winter, but that the vast majority work year round there and they have a great Evans(?) scholar program, when I was down there last summer I met 2 of them and they are from all over the country and choose to go Bandon.

And thanks for not taking it as me questioning this or saying it's not the best, I was/am honestly curious if there is something with overall caddy rankings.

completely understand that and that was part of my question, being that it's such a personal experience. At Bandon I had 1 bad caddie, 1 good caddie (actually a great caddie in terms of knowledge and course management, just a little more serious than i like), and 1 awesome caddie who's caddied for me the last couple times.
