Tee it forward, Punched Course etc......

Recommended Posts

Hey Gang,

I thought I would bring up a personal conflict debate.......

Yesterday played at a course where they punched the whole course, greens and fairways and tee boxes, It was actually in great condition for a punched course, the price was almost half off and the greens were halfway decent.

BUTTTTTT, all the tee boxes were put on the Red Tee boxes, Gold, Blue, White and Red all together. A significant advantage, from the Blues/Whites we play from. We normally play blue because the course is short to begin with, the white is pretty short, so the red...was almost a joke.

Anyways, we were forced to "Tee it Forward". Experiencing it first hand actually made the game more fun. BUT, I ask you... who is the "Tee it Forward" initiative really for??

What I mean is

We have a (Yesterdays 4some)

18 Handicapper

2, 12 Handicapper

and a 6 Handicapper

The scores were as followed (Details of golfer in parenthesis)

18Hdcp - 87 (Long but inconsistent, the rest of the game is mediocre)

12Hdcp - 75 (Short, Middle of Fairway 90%, Uses Hybrids but a good 2nd shot game, decent short game and good putter)

12Hdcp - 74 (Long, decent consistency, Strong irons, decent short game, decent putting)

6Hdcp- 78 ( All around good game)

As we can see the scores did not really reflect an advantage with the "Tee it Forward" I was the 12 that shot a 74 while that was my lowest round to date.... I dont feel like it was a real round of golf due to the significant distance advantage. While I can Stick it in my GHIN from the Red Tees as a legit round, and I think I should.... I just dont feel that good about it?

How would you truly feel about shooting a 74 from red tees without a choice?? (Please this is not a passive brag, but a serious question)

Secondly, because of this, should I "Continue" to tee it forward? I mean I shot a good round, does that mean I should be playing from the "Forward Tees" all the time? Where do you actually set that bar to say, hay Par is 72 so if I shoot par that is good right? Until I start shooting under par then I should move back? Or is a 10Hdcp the bar, or a 15hdcp the bar etc etc....

As for short ....... 2 Par4s I drove over the green, many other Par 4's I was GW or less going in, 3 Par 5s I was 9 iron or less on second shots. The par 3's were 9i down to a 60* LW.....

Would you feel it was a real round of golf???

What is par / slope / rating?
You may find that you are only a couple strokes better than your index?
I think it's an interesting question you've posed.

Here are the Numbers

Gold 73.4 / 123

Blue 71.6 / 118

White 69.4 / 114

Red 65.7 / 107

If I did it right,

Gold - 0.6
Blue - 2.3
White - 4.5
Red - 8.7

???? While my Handicap is like 11.1 I guess, that is pretty close to my handicap?????

I agree Nbg, while people talk about teeing it forward, well, were do you draw the line, I mean lets be honest, I am a decent player but teeing it forward would not really help me if I was not hitting the ball straight, the biggest advantage was the fact that I was hitting it straight, my distances were right and I was making putts....but if something wasnt working I wouldnt matter if I was 100+ yards closer to the green if I cant hit the green nor make a putt?

Yeah, it's kinda cool how it works out like that, eh? That 74 from the reds is like 80 from the blues.

Here is another side questions?

While I had no choice about the actually layout the course decided to put all the tee boxes on the Red?

Is this a legit round to input?

Secondly.... Humor me for a second, but since the Gold Tees were there, could someone actually put the slope of the Gold LOL? Seriously though, we have no choice so do we just throw the score out? Do we put it under Red?

If there isn't a red rating for men, then I wouldn't post it and wouldn't worry about it. I think there's a formula out there that deals with how to adjust the white rating based on the yardage, but I wouldn't go to that much trouble for a single round.

The point of the play it forward movement is to keep 25 handicaps off the blue tees, where all they do is shoot 95, slow down the course and have no fun. Nobody really thinks you need to break 80 from a set of tees to play them, but it's really about encouraging men to check their egos at the pro shop door and play a set of tees that enables them to shoot a reasonable score in a reasonable amount of time.

If there is no rating from the reds for the men, then I don't think you can post the score.

ps: I think it was Sam Snead who said that all golfers should play the forward tees until they shoot par or better.
[/quote]

I don't do it myself, but I think that is a really good suggestion. People would end up hitting from the proper tees. They'd probably have more fun, and rounds might possibly go a little quicker. It's unfortunate the tees have been specifically named for men, women and seniors.

Tee it forward has two purposes 1) to try and change the perception that men play from the back tees and 2) to speed up play. I play at a course that hosts a tour event and almost everyone plays from the blue tees regardless of ability. Nobody plays the white tees but many should. Playing the right tees makes it more fun and helps speed up play
