Callaway had my full attention during the chat when they talked about how low the new GBB spin rate is. I have a tendency to hit necked cuts under tournament pressure so low spin is good for me. I'm planning on 9* GBB, wrong handed, with whatever shaft has the stiffest butt section to handle my quick (awful) transition.

I literally just returned my R15 430tp on playability to Golfsmith and purchased the GBB last week. So I am going to get a DBD to compare against the GBB. I will do a full review on the site over the next few weeks. I got my first round yesterday in with the GBB and I am bombing it. Best feeling driver that I can remember. High low spin bombs. Hit five or six drives dead in the toe and they were all in 280-290 range where normally they are 260 stinkers. Now just have to decide if I want to order the 9 or 10.5.

Now, only if I could get Callaway to send a demo of both the GBB and the 816 DBD to Korea; it's certainly easier to find a great woman than a left-handed club in this country :no2:

I haven't received the BBA 816 DBD but when I do receive it I plan on doing a review. Currently I am playing the Great Big Bertha and I'm in love. Long and forgiving with a great feel off the face. Hit some of my longest drives in years. I love that misses slightly high on the face don't spin too little. They stay in the air and carry forever.

You are playing the great big and you won the BBA 816 DBD?
That's pretty awesome and I'm very jealous.

 • 3 weeks later...

I have played 5 rounds now with the DBD, I went with the Rogue I/O shaft 9 degree N,S. I was previously hitting the 815 DBD with rogue silver. In the small amount of time I have has the club it is a beast. No Trackman, but I think it launches a little higher with less Spin. Nothing crazy but it is definitely better. I have found it easier to hit than the previous version as well. When you hit off the screws the feel is amazing and has a great sound. When you miss you know right away where on the face you struck the ball. The only "issue" I have had so far is that the crown shows dirt and smudges and they don't just wipe away. All in all I would say this club is big improvement over last years model.

So I have three rounds in and some launch monitor data I was playing the R15 430. The DBD 816 is really a beast when it comes distance and significant more forgiving in my opinion then 815 and XR Pro. On my best shots with the DBD I am level with the R15 430 and on mishits I am ten to fifteen longer. This is where this club excels. I put the weight high and in the toe and it really has perform amazingly for me. Here is my Dilemma though I had purchased the GBB the week before I won this thing and have played it and I really love the forgiveness of the driver. My ballspeed is higher on average by like 3-4 mph with this head. My spin with the same shaft is about 300-400 higher then the DBD but I have opted to go with a lower spinning shaft in the GBB.

This is my review on Callaway Golf for the GBB: I have been searching for this driver! I have gone through ten drivers over the past three years in hunt for a driver that I would like as much as my Taylormade 510 TP that I used back in 2006. First thing I love the sound that this Driver produces, it has a soft yet powerful feeling on perfectly struck balls. I know when I miss one because it feels different but it still goes on those less then perfect strikes. My last round out at a familiar course I had my longest drive on 8 of the 14 holes. It definitely is much easier to draw than the Big Bertha Alpha 816 (have both of them). The Great Big Bertha is staying in the bag! So excited for the rest of the seasons. As I write this my last round out I shout 69 with seven birdies! Thank you Callaway for helping me driving it longer and straighter!

The GBB will be in the bag for hopefully as long as the 510 TP was (6 Years). Thanks again to Callaway and Golfwrx for this great contest!

My Review for the DBD 816: LONGER AND MORE FORGIVING!

This driver is the bomb. Long and accurate! Coming from an R15 430 this driver is just as long which says a lot and this one is more forgiving. My mishits are finding the fairway. This is the best looking Callaway Driver that I ever remember seeing. My only issue with this driver is that I also like the Great Big Bertha. This one is definitely lower spinning and five yards longer on my best strikes. You can't go wrong with this one. Love the shaft options available with no upcharge.

By total chance I demoed the GBB...wasn't remotely interested in replacing my G30, as I'm a Ping loyalist and was not dissatisfied with my driver. I hit a 9 degree GBB, stock settings, stock Kuro Kage shaft in X flex (haven't played anything but S in about 6-7 years). I knew within 3 swings that it was a good fit. High, flat trajectory and just awesome feel/sound. I didn't have my own clubs with me to compare head to head, but I was pretty sure my eyes weren't lying.

Anyway, I took a photo of the shaft specs and ordered one as soon as I got home. When the GBB arrived, my only hope was that it would perform the same as the one I had demoed while traveling. Thankfully, the one I got feels and flys exactly the same as I remembered.

I've had it for 2 weeks now and can honestly say it's the best driver I've ever owned. I'm 47, a low single digit...to occasionally scratch, and this thing is legit. I can really launch it high if I need to, or I can hit those penetrating frozen ropes on demand.

This driver is really making it fun to play golf. Perhaps I just stumbled on a head/shaft combo that fits me better than anything has in quite a while, but I still recommend giving it a try. Well done Callaway!
