Caledonia was the easiest course we played, we usually keep score since we bet on everything, and it was the easiest by far, pawleys plantation was the hardest.

It did not help we started on ten, the nine is a terrible hole to finish.

Also, the starter push us to play from the whites, after hitting hybrid wedge on the 12/13 (3&4 for us) we decided to move to the tips. We where 12 guys, all single digit in pretty good shape, but he insisted on us playing from the whites.

Course condition was excellent, and the 18th is a great hole. I think it was the only course all 12 of us broke 80.
For future reference you never have to play the tees that a starter or ranger "suggests" unless you are becoming a pace of play issue. It is unfortunate you were coerced into playing the short box on an already short golf course. I would have to hit 5 irons all day from the whites at Caledonia no wonder you felt it was easy and overrated. Play that from the tips and your tee shots become entirely different animals.

9 in the most disappointing hole in Myrtle, but I always suggest to people to ask to tee of #1.

Pawleys is the most difficult course in Myrtle Beach in my opinion. A fun round but man it eats my lunch. I have played out there many times and have played well only once. Your approach shots have to be great to keep your score down there.
Jeremy Pope's course record at Pawleys is pretty impressive. His scorecard is hanging up in the pro shop.

8,9,16,17,18 at Glen Dornoch are worth the trip. Great clubhouse to enjoy a bevvy afterwards too.

Dunes club accepts reservations through myrtlebeachgolf.com

Thank you! My father is a local (lives near Legends courses), so hoping to play this Dunes Club over the next few days. Will let you guys know what I think. Also planning to play Grand Dunes.

My father had said that the BareFoot courses had lost their greens earlier in the season, are they back up and running nicely now? Never played there, so may hit that up this week as well.

In NMB the Dunes Club has to be your #1 choice. It is challenging, architecturally interesting and won't beat you up too much.

Your next two choices aren't as clear cut and depend on what you are looking for in a course. The Barefoot Dye, Love and Fazio courses are good choices. The Fazio course is the most forgiving and the Dye the toughest. Fazio has lots of bunkers but many times they just frame the holes to catch bad shots and don't affect your strategy. Dye makes you think more. I'll have to disagree with the post that said Dye is over-rated.

Glen Dornoch is a challenging course with many tight fairways and several forced carries. It has some very scenic holes, but be prepared to lose some balls if you're a mid or high handicap player. Heather Glen is a more forgiving version of Glen Dornoch without the waterway views.

Tidewater has some really good holes and marsh and waterway vuews but ut is the least consistent design of the ones you mentioned. I prefer the Barefoot courses and Grand Dunes.

Sweet Jesus!! U must be joking, or having a Grand Mal Seizure!

You got me!! Fell for it Hook, Line & Sinker. I'd rather play Baytree than Possum Trot and its been closed for 10 years and the brush shrubbery is 20 ft high....its still better than possum trot!

 • 2 weeks later...

I lived and worked in the Myrtle Beach area for three years and have been going there for the better part of two decades.

If you're staying in NMB, there are enough good golf courses up that way to play and enjoy without needing to fight the time and traffic required to get to and from Caledonia, IMO. Stay anywhere south of US 501 and Caledonia and True Blue and Heritage become out-and-out must-play courses. I'll always be amused at people complaining about 9 at Caledonia being a "bad" hole. The routing isn't ideal, but I think it adds an interesting wedge/short iron shot to the round. You guys who don't like it must make birdie on it every time, right? Wow, I'm impressed!

Anyway...

Dunes Club - definitely play it if you're in NMB.

Barefoot Resort - I've always thought highly of all the courses, particularly the Dye and Love. Fazio is very good from about the 9th hole on and Norman is even interesting, despite housing encroaching in places.

One course not yet mentioned is the Surf Club, which I've heard very good things about. It's "private" in the same sense as Dunes, in that you can usually get on, depending on where you're staying/when you plan on playing (e.g., weekdays may work out).

Haven't played Heather Glen or Glen Dornoch or Shaftesbury Glen.

If you want to go out Hwy 9, Long Bay is good and tough.

Thistle is massively overrated. If you like courses where more attention was paid to making the clubhouse interesting than the course itself, you'll love Thistle.

Grande Dunes is a little overrated, too. The faux-Tuscan clubhouse and housing all over the course add to the "prestige" of it, I guess, but a lot of the holes are repetitive. The Waterway holes are good, though - particularly 8 and 14.

Tidewater is nice enough, and I'm sure the new greens are nice, but I thought the unending cart rides between most greens and the following tees were tedious. Surprised people can bash the 9th at Caledonia and stay quiet about this aspect of Tidewater.

World Tour is gimmicky as heck. Avoid.

No one's mentioned Farmstead, which I think is one of the more underrated courses up that way. It's known for the par 6, but I think the rest of the course is full of solid holes, and the course has always been in very good shape when I've been there.

Cheers,

--Tim

Dunes Club-Course was amazing. Probably my favorite course that we played. Honestly though it kind of seems like you are not wanted the entire we were there. Almost like we were a nuisance.

Tidewater-Probably my most favorite course we played. The greens were amazing. There was a pretty good ride between holes but I loved the course and the layout.

True Blue- It was cart path obly the day we played so I really don't think we got the true feel of the course. I shot my best score there but it was not my favorite. I want to play it when it is 90 degree rule and see what I think then.

Wild Wing Advocet-Worst course we played. Very bland. I hated that course completely. Conditions were pretty decent but just nothing that really wowed me at all. Very bland and plain. We played the heckler that morning and I liked that goat track better.

We played a couple of other courses just for a spur of the moment evening round and none of them were really that great. Tidewater and Dunes were probably my 2 favorites and really stood out the most. I can't wait for next year.
