I would say June-mid Sept is decent. Either way you get wind...just how much LOL Some days the wind is an easy 5-8mph...others 20-30mph. So it all depends.

I just took the family over last weekend to do a little fishing and play BAYSIDE golf course next to Lake Mac. Played it a few years back and liked it so thought WTH. I really like the front 9. Not a long course at 6500 from the tips and being around 2800 or in elevation gives about 5% gain. Back is decent but some "different" holes. The first time you play it there are few holes you need to know the line and layup areas so if you play with a local that will help.

The Prairie Club, Wild Horse are also excellent.

Where are you coming from... all the places I listed on the west side of the state.

I will be coming from Texas. Probably fly into Denver. I already have emailed Dismal River and have a sponsor. Probably going to write Sand Hills to see if I can get on there. Will also make the drive to Prarie Club. I just need to give Dismal River some dates and also need to nail down a time if possible with Sandhills.

If you're looking at 36 a day you'll want to be there probably no later than the 2nd week of September. Which is a beautiful time, highs should reach into the 70's, but it will be brisk in the mornings, probably going to start your day in the upper 40's or low 50's. Wind is usually down by fall. You will have to be watchful of an early freeze though, it could delay your start in the morning.

If you're just going 18 a day, September is just about perfect.

Nice. A group of us did pretty much the same trip a few years back. We got on Sandhills and a local pro called and got us on Dismal. We played Wildhorse and Bayside also on the trip along with The Prairie Club. I would recommend you toss in Balleyneal on the way out if you can. A bit of track but worth it. Played it with a member, great track IMHO.

I live in Denver so pretty much know what your plan is LOL...great choice. Soooooo If you need an extra always down to do it again, was one of the best trips I have done in the last 15 years.... all depends on the WIND... =)

I just did this trip the last week of June (road tripped from Colorado). You really can't get reliable weather in Nebraska before then. I'd honestly recommend September due to the possible winter kill. @chile dip master has it spot in. Hit Ballyneal for sure on the way, it's much easier to get on than it used to be. Wild Horse is fun but not Dismal/Prairie/Sand Hills level. If you're short on time hit Ballyneal over Wild Horse.

This is an awesome trip, I'll be doing it again next summer. You will not regret it.

+1 on Jgisland.... Wildhorse is good, but it is about 1.5 hours past the turn towards Sandhills. If you want the extra round Ballyneal is well worth the trip of the beaten path.

A member and I will be playing it in a few weeks. Looking forward to it, just hope the new swing change I am trying will locked in by then.

Edit:
Here is a decent review on Ballyneal. I think the review is fairly spot on from my experience.

If you get on Sand Hills my recommendation is to stay on site if they offer it, and play all day. Played there a few weeks ago and only got in 18. It's the perfect course to play multiple times in a day.

Also, if you can take a caddie and walk it, do it. It was an really easy walk, and we played in 3:10 and were by no means pushing it.

You write them. Make the letter very simple, explain why you would respectfully want to play the course and wait and see. Years back you could do it VIA email but I don't that is the case now.

Edit: Also the food is EXCELLENT at the course so if you do get on stay there, play 36 if you can and have an excellent meal

Second on Ballyneal. Exceptional course. I've played with a member a few times and definitely worth the drive.

I'm on the edge of the state and my home course is Monument Shadows in Gering. I highly recommend it as a public muni. Not at the same level of the other courses, but really underrated by the locals. The layout is pretty superb and the views are outstanding.

It is about $45 a round and in Denver, this course would be easy $80+.

Our group just got back from the prairie club. Both the dunes and pines course were in superb condition. Temps were unusually warm. 100 degrees. Had one guy in our group that played dismal river last year and said he liked prairie club much better than dismal river. I haven't played dismal. Rick

We played Dismal River. Its good but I would agree it is not something to write home about it. Dunes/Pines are right there IMHO. I am not a huge fan of JN courses. First time you play typically your scoring is jacked up You could striking the ball perfect, land on the wrong portion of the green (not knowing of course) and it will roll off....like 30-40 yards...ie Dismal. Second time you know of course....

I have played a few higher end courses around the country, but I don't think I've had more fun than we did at the prairie club. If you can, rent one of the four bedroom cabins. They have four master suites with a central commons area. Ideal for those that like to stay up or rise earlier than the others. My recommendation would be to go in September. During the week if you can swing it. Courses get busy on the weekends, but they are relatively quiet during the week. Jesus is an excellent chef as well. Never had a meal that wasn't delicious. We will definitely be going back down next September.

what are the chances for decent weather and course conditions around May10?
I'd say you have a pretty good chance for decent weather at that time. Probably will be breezy though, we have a lot of wind in the spring.

Of course, we could also have a blizzard at that time.

I agree on both counts. I would say less chance on snow honestly, you will have wind at that time for sure. Hopefully not to strong.
