Good idea to add a practice putting, chipping green between each hole?

Recommended Posts

We all know slow play all to well. It seems there are times when people refuse to let you through. Or the Marshall never even comes out when you make that call. Now I can't say you have experienced what I have experienced. But, I find myself putting for fun on the tee box or I will chip off the side of the tee box at times. Should courses add practice greens between holes? Is this a good or bad idea?

Not between every hole, but having small chipping greens at bottleneck sections of the course is a pretty good idea.

Mansfield National Golf Club, a course I frequently play in Mansfield, TX, has a small chipping green just like that. It is situated right behind the tee box of hole #5, a long dogleg left par 3 with danger short and all of the left side playing 233 yards from the tips, handicap 1. When it gets backed up there, which it usually does on weekends, I often make good use of it and chip a few.

Would be nice but I agree maintenance costs would just cause
the price of a round to go up. If you don't mind that then YES! lol

great idea but would lead to more slow play imo(folks still putting and chipping rather than hitting tee shots). i usually just chip on the tee boxes.

I've never seen a dogleg on a par 3.

Unfortunately he is not lying. Probably one of the worst holes I have played. If you are at the tips and the pin is anywhere other than the far right side of the green you cannot see the top of the pin, much less the green. Really pretty awful design for a par 3. The hole may have been OK before the brush around the 'dogleg' grew up, but it is high enough now that the green is impossible to see.

What I do is bring a wedge with me to the tee box and try to chip from one side to the other from just off the box. I aim at the tee marker on the other side. No damage to the tee and I keep loose instead of wondering when the group in front is going to hit their next ball.

I've done that at the first tee when a big group of us had multiple tee times but not on the course between holes. It's a good idea.

That's crazy for that to be a par 3. Configure it as a par 4 and that same 230 direct shot measures 270 through a fairway measurement. They Hyatt Hill Country has a par 4 like that except it's 290 direct across the gulch. If the wind's blowing behind you and can figure out which way to aim (visibility is totally obscured of the green from even the ladies' tee box), go for it! I tried it on a second shot for fun once and was still right of the green in the last layup spot -- I think I would have had to have fired off at about a 40º left angle from the tee box to hit the green.

Speaking of crazy par 3's though, I've played a private par 3 course where there's a 270-yard over the water par 3, so that one's crazy too, but I drove that green once and made par so who's to say it shouldn't be a par 3?
