27 year old learning to golf and needs instruction, online videos, anything

Recommended Posts

Hi. My gf is 27 years old and is learning to golf. I am a pretty good golfer and know more than I probably should about the swing (this may or may not help her). I am looking for advice on getting her good fundamentals and allowing her to fall into her own swing. I enjoy helping her but sometimes she can get frustrated with me and doesn't like to be corrected in front of others while on the range. She is athletic but complains a tennis background is messing her up (not sure if this is valid, says she is a lot more wristie on her tennis swing). She has been to the range maybe 10 times at most and played 27 holes on a local par 3 course (45 yard to 108 yard holes) so far. She shot 38 (par 27) on her first nine and 73 (par 54) for her first 18 (had a few mulligans but whatever).

Some information about her swing. She uses a ten finger grip. She usually wants to move her head and weight too far backwards on her back swing. Has a problem maintaining her spine angle through the strike (tops it more than hits it fat). She has trouble keeping her left arm straight and doesn't like to turn her shoulders. Likes to swing outside-in. Her nine iron goes around 50-60 yards, her four hybrid seems to go around 95-100 yards (when struck pretty well). I do know she is just beginning, but she wants to get better quickly. :)

I will try to get her permission to post updated progess videos of her swing. I did use the V1 app to tape her one time and it seemed to help from the first video to the last of the session. She says she would like to play in amateur tournaments. I also want to keep this fun for her so that she sticks with it. The online videos I seem to find are not really for beginners and don't explain the basics of the golf swing very well.

So please tell me of good online videos, a DVD or book for her that worked for you or a woman you were helping. What swing thoughts or drills can I try to reiterate to her for her "needing work" areas? What helped you learn as a beginner and start to shoot better? I am looking to do whatever I can for her and want as much feedback as possible. Thanks a ton for any feedback also!

Teaching a girlfriend is certainly a tricky matter!

Though I'm nowhere near an instructor, one thing I tend to do with similar people (I don't mean to imply "all/just females") is that I build off the chipping and pitching shots so they get comfortable with making contact with the golf ball. For full swing, I love Manuel de la Torre's philosophy - all I say is "swing the club over your right shoulder with your hands, and swing the club to the target. Regardless of contact at first, that at least lets the golfer feel how the body responds to the swing of the club. I also make it a point of reminding them that the ball will always start wherever they point the club face (I know this is a generalization), and hopefully they then let their subconscious figure it out while they get rid of the fear of messing up - of hitting a parked car, or tree, or house, or group on a different tee box, etc.

I wholeheartedly agree with letting a professional do the majority of teaching if you/she can afford it.

Hi there,

Coming from experience, I have been golfing for about two years and can say that these are some of the most enjoyable times I get to spend with my fiance. However, it can get really ugly fast if you intrude too much on her game. Golf is very much a personal sport that takes a lot of personal discovery to master.

When I started, I took lessons. Although I was taking lessons, it took me about six months to really progress and feel comfortable with my swing. My fiance is a great golfer and sometimes thinks he is able to correct me or give me tips, but honestly it doesn't help. Like your girlfriend, I get very frustrated because it conflicts with other things my lessons have taught me and quite honestly, I just don't understand him. His thought process about his golf swing is much different than mine, so when he tries to help it ends up just frustrating me.

More so, golfing is a lot of fun because it gives people time to enjoy together. If we are playing 18 and he keeps commenting on my swing or correcting me, we've just turned the day into a lesson and it's not exactly fun anymore. Something that's helped is setting boundaries. I ask for help if I want it, but ask that he just sit back and let me play when we're together. It's much better this way.

Also, I'm currently doing the 60-Day Tathata golf training. It has really helped build my swing and teach me mental and physical fundamentals for playing well. Just this weekend, I broke 100 for the first time. You may want to check it out for her. I have a promo code to get the program for free I can give you, if you're interested. Just private message me and I'll shoot it over to you. http://www.tathatagolf.com/

Best of luck!

Below is an editted version of a post I made here:

http://www.golfwrx.c.../#entry12373438

This is my experience & YMMV but if I can help another woman avoid the (EXPENSIVE!!!) mistakes I made, well...

Sign. Me. Up.

HTH and BEST OF LUCK!!!!!

Kathy Marie

========================

About instruction, I WISH I could have back all the money I have thrown at that!!! Always remember what my BIL (who coaches another sport) told me: "Kathy, once you get a client you do everything you can to keep them." This baloney of sticking with an instructor to "work through" the hard parts is (IME!!!) baloney no matter HOW thin you slice it. If you are working at practicing & NOT seeing solid improvement by the 4th lesson???

DUMP THEM.

A bad instructor WILL make you WORSE!!! Ask me how I know..... :angry2:

(And don't worry, there will always be another 50 falling all over themselves to take your money if you want to try lessons again, even your Dumpee will take you back)

So, after deciding *I* can do as good a job of making myself worse as my old instructor did, I went to the library. (Books have editors and cost money to create while libraries curate their selection carefully, unlike websites & youtube videos...) It was a suggestion from birly-shirly in the Classic Golf & Golfers Forum that led me to John Jacobs, his Practical Golf and The Golf Doctor have cleared up things I didn't understand FOR YEARS. I also recommend Phil Moore's The Mad Science Of Golf and Understanding Golf plus Harvey Penick's book for women, For All Who Love The Game

Last But Not Least Department: The first sentence after the intros in Ben Hogan's Five Lessons The Modern Fundamentals of Golf is, "GOOD GOLF BEGINS WITH A GOOD GRIP."

And it's just that way, in all caps.

Talking about your grip isn't sexy now & it wasn't then either. But I've become convinced it IS, as Mr. Hogan said, the heartbeat of the swing.

Quick note: dog flog recommended Shawn Clement on youtube further on in that thread, here's a link:

I admit, so far I'm very impressed!! A logical presentation that's easy for me to understand and the price is right...

Make sure she picks the instructor, if and when - not you! You are not her and who works great for you could be a disaster for her.

Never teach by telling, teach by showing. If she is repeatedly doing something incorrectly and is unhappy with the results let her talk. If the conversation proceeds along the lines that she asks if you have had a similar issue, you can tell her. You only proceed to show her anything if and when she decides to ask you what you did. You can show her and let her take it for what it is worth. You do not correct her - even if she immediately does it wrong, unless she asks you to check what she is doing and show her again what you did - you never try to correct how she does it.

It is the same approach I use - if someone wants to learn and you have knowledge they are interested in - let them come to you. She should always be in control. It is a mistake I see a lot when people try to show someone how to do something "in particular by men" they do not want to waste time showing something as they see it as a problem and want to immediately make it go away, and somehow (especially with a significant other) demonstrate how superior they are, instead of exercising humility and grace while helping another for the simple pleasure of giving.

She is important to you - treat her with respect, humility and help her when she wants help, but let her grow when she wants to spread her wings and try it herself - quite simple really - treat her like a best friend you golf with.

Just a thought, but my wife was also a tennis player and she has had a heck of a time learning the golf swing. I kept telling her to swing the club like a two-handed back hand shot. Problem was, she is right handed and that motion is like a left handed golf swing. I'm planning to have her try a left handed set of clubs to see if that makes it any easier. She seems to think it might.

Food for thought.

The original post is from 2015 😂. I wonder if those two youngsters made it 🤔.
Or maybe they had a baby and the golf ended.
