Alot of the time when i play with juniors, they have the potential to be really good but their course management and mental attitude lets them down... a few swing flaws but nothing major, most have the basis there... I would say most have the potential to shoot low 70s but due to mental attitude and course management, they dont...

Have lessons, get your kit sorted out, laugh off bad shots and take a club more than you THINK you need and youll see some lower scores....

I am 16 and have a handicap of 0.4. I see this "anti-sandbagging" a lot and can probably be identified as someone who has done this sadly. By that, I mean that I have posted many nine hole scores that I have shot on the GHIN website. When those are combined, they often produce scores a little lower than my average 18 hole score. If that makes me a vanity handicapper, then I am GUILTY! :drinks:

To those who said that handicaps should be based on tournament scores only, I agree. However there is one flaw. To get into tournaments, you most likely have to have a handicap. However, you would have had to play in tournaments to establish a handicap. Makes it tough to get a handicap established. Besides that, I would love to see some type of "tournament only" handicap established for those who play quite a bit of competititve golf.

I personally think that the American handicapping system is stupid, no offence.

You can basically choose what you want your handicap to be, and all rounds are included, even if you play by yourself.

They need to use the same system that Australia and England, and many other countries use, where you must be a member of a course in order to have a "golflink" handicap in Australia, and must play in the comp's (which are on between 2-5 days a week for men) to have your handicap change. In these comps you play with other members, and cheating is not accepted and results in a suspension from entering the course or even complete ban from the club. Your handicap is not decided over your past 20 rounds, rather your entire golfing life with a golflink handicap.

This means that you cannot rapidly go from a 5 handicap to a scratch, which you can in the US.

32-18 hcp lose .3 p/shot under hcap and get .1 back when over 4 shot buffer

12-18 hcp lose .3 p/shot under hcap and get .1 back when over 3 shot buffer

4-12 hcp lose .2 p/shot under hcap and get .1 back when over 1 shot buffer

<4 hcp lose .1 p/shot under hcap and get .1 back when over hcap and get .2 back when more than 8 over.

This system is VERY accurate, and doesn't allow people to easily win comps or to easily lose shots on their handicap.

Why would a junior golfer be on here who is a 18 handicap? This site is for people who care about golf and want to improve.

Are you kidding me? I think that of all people, higher handicappers would want to improve the most. I'm about an 18 handicap and im totally obsessed with golf, I love this game. When im not on GolfWrx, I'm in my backyard hitting into my net, when I'm not out there, im reading this months issue of "Golf Magazine" for the fifth time, If im not doing that, then I'm most likely doing something that should be golf related. How can you think that higher hancicappers wouldn't love golf as much? When you were an 18 handicap, did you not like golf? I dont think so, either you love this game and are obsessed with when you first try it or you dont play it. There is no gray area. Sorry for the semi-rant lol.

A lot of juniors, especially at my club, post only their good scores.

I only post tournament scores so my handicap is pretty accurate to what I play to.

I think that only the most obsessed-with-golf juniors go on forums and boards like this, therefore the majority of them have low handicaps because they are obsessed. I got hooked playing golf myself, I would say that being obsessed with golf isn't all bad.

In regards to handicaps, I would have to say that most junior golfers only post their best scores. But in the end, you're only hurting yourself by doing that.

Are you saying they cheat? do you have to put all cards in in america? and you can be cut from them all?

As I understand it, here in the U.S. your handicap is essentially based on "potential". The best 10 of the last 20 scores are what counts I believe. My handicap is "real" and I only post yournament scores. Does this mean I only shoot in the 60s? I WISH!!! But a 69 or 70 during an AJGA tourney on a course with a 75 rating drops the index pretty low. Couple that with a 77 that gets thrown out as it's not one of the best 10 of the last 20 and you have a plus index.

the juniors ( ie 12-16 range) at my club have lower handicaps than norm because they aren't strong enough to hit shots that go very far offline. (there is ALOT of OB at my club). They just poke it down the middle every time and make par or bogey. But that just at my club. I know there are some 16 yr olds out there who can smoke it!

I am 17 and a 2.6 rounds to a 3 here in the states...local club i play at is par 71 6650 yards or something like that...a decent course, but I would love it to be longer to be more like the courses i play in tournaments...just shot my first round under last week shot a 70, and a 78 the day before...so ill put both those scores in, not just the 70 like some would...so my handicap is pretty true to the US system i would say...would you not?

i'm a 1.6 handicap. ive been playing three years, but i play as much as i can and spend almost all my money on golf and gas. ive never had a lesson, but i played a lot of sports. im now 18 and started palying golf at 15. i played hockey and baseball and i think the two really helped me. i play righty and putt left. i played hockey lefty. i consider myself a good putter not to be cocky or anything. i can play lefty and shoot 90 or so, but that doesnt compare to my scores righty. i guess my point is.. that junior golfers who work hard on their game can have legitemently low handicaps. especially athletic kids who turn their focus to golf. in theory it is not a difficult game. think about it. a 450 yard par four. average kid now a day can hit it at least 280. you hit the ball 280 straight you got 170 left. hit a 7 iron. hit the green and two putt. if youre able to keep that up it isnt that hard to shoot a good score. you can get a bogey every three holes and shot 79 on a par 72 and that doesnt account for any birdies. just think like that when playing and i think youll have handicaps like many junior and college players. hope this is helpful to those critics. and i hope i dont come off cocky or anything i really dont mean to in any way. peace

Out of the many juniors I have played with, I have probably only seen 10 juniors (hs and 2 college kids) tops that can average 280. Maybe I haven't played with many really long players but averaging 280 (especially straight) is doing real good. I average about 245ish. A 450 yard par 4 seems real long to me.

i guess it depends who you play with. i average around 305 with my driver accurately and get outdriven by a couple of my friends all the time given they dont always put it in the fway when they outdrive me. in hs matches i was usually the longer of my group but not by much. i dont know maybe it was because i played the 1 spot and the other kids i played with were the #1s? maybe balls go further in nj for some reason? roll further wit the harder ground? haha i dont know, but most kids ive played with can keep up with me or outdrive me any given hole.
