within the nxt 2 years, i play off 13 now and have played for a year??

just read about the foundation degree to become a PGA Pro and you have to be off 4.4 for a while to show you are a decent golfer

i have just started college and in 2 years i can apply to do the degree and i would find this really interesting and a PGA Pro would be a dream job

the thing is...im 16 now and play off 13, i have played for a year and am self tought, i have had 1 lesson from the pro at my course which is called saddleworth, is quite tricky and very hilly

what im wondering is if its really worth going full steam ahead for 2 years to try and get down to 4?

I would say with practice and dedication going from a 13 to a 4.4 or less in two years is very doable, I have gone from a high 12 to a 7.2 since january this just by playing once a week and working on my short game. I fully expect myself to be below a 5 next year. I would add that If you were to bring in a quality pro your game should drop even faster, since once you hit single digits it starts to get tougher to shave off strokes and this is where a pro would come in handy. I've started playing again for around nearly 2yrs now, and i'm currently off 9.

 

My goal is to be below 5 by the end of next year, so YES very do able

I would note that In high school way back in 1991-1995 I played between a one and two handicap. Then I took some time of and just played a few rounds here and there maybe 5-8 rounds a year. I decided to really get back into the game last december and I have been working at it ever since.

 

I would also add there is no real magic formula to getting your handicap down other than work on your weakest parts of your game until they become strengths, also keep track of your stats like Fairways, GIR, Putts per GIR total putts, and short game save percentage. This way you can isolate the areas that need work. Most importantly enjoy and have fun playing.

Look to improve your weaknesses and to generally develop sound fundamentals and a solid tee-to-green game and your consistency and scoring will improve markedly.

 

Couple that with a solid short game and you'll be away.

 

It'll take some effort on your part and a commitment to put in the hours on the practice green/practice ground but something like a mid single-figure handicap is very achievable in the timeframe you've mooted. You know your game and the areas that need work over and above the general 'tightening up' that's required, but there's no reason you can't achieve what you're after.

 

One of the best things you can do is to try to play a bit of competitive golf and to try to get out on the course with some good players who play scratch or thereabouts golf.

I started playing at 40 and within 5 years, I was a 5.

 

After staying around a 3 for a few years, I dropped to a 1.3 last year and now I'm down to a 0.2 , my lowest ever, and I'm 57.

 

The keys to improvement:

 

1 - Learn to hit solid irons, particularly mid irons. You've got to make par from 175 yards in.

 

2 - Short game. Learn to chip the ball close and never miss a 5-footer (you will miss, but you've got to believe you won't.) That's nothing but practice.

 

3 - Gain confidence. If you believe you can, and work at it, you will.

the club i play at have banned chipping around the putting green so im struggling to practice that area at the moment, does anyone know of any other ways to practice?

 

also we have a driving range but it plays up quite a steep hill so yardage is hard to establish

 

if i could invest on regular lessons say once a week, would this have a big impact on my game? obviously the ability to put the techniques learned into playing on the course is needed?

I went from a 14 to a 4 in two years.

 

I had to work my @ss off. I go to the driving range every M-F, and focus on targets rather than distance. I'm routinely shorter than the other low handicappers in my club, but I hit almost every fairway and green.

 

Get your driver going straight and your 150 yard and less game as good as possible.

 

It's taken me another two years to go from a 4 to a 2.6. Better long irons and putting from everywhere.

depends on how much you practice and the often over looked key... the quality of the teacher. I personally think 1on1 once every other week would be enough for lessons though.
