custom putter - close, but not exact - what would you do?

Hi guys,

My custom putter arrived yesterday. It is very nice, well well made - but the colors of some of the stampings were flip-flopped and the wrong headcover was sent to me. I won't mention which company because I in no way am trying to give bad feedback, just get some feedback of my own. Normally it wouldn't be a big deal, colors here and there - but I chose them for specific reasons to match other stampings (i.e. my jersey # to match the color stamping of my team name).

I'm not the kind of guy who sends back food in a restaurant, or makes someone re-make me a drink - but this is a $300 (which to someone like me is a lot of money) custom putter that I ordered the exact way I wanted it and confirmed the proof. Now, the owner hasn't gotten back to me yet so I'm not sure what they'll say anyway (he's a very nice guy but I don't know their company's customer service policy in instances like this), but I am torn on this because I don't wanna be a jerk (clearly this putter wouldn't sell to anyone else), but if I ordered a red Cadillac I wouldn't drive off the lot with a blue one.

Let me know what you think and what you would do, because I don't want to even take one putt with it before I have a decision.

Thanks,

Tony

Give them a call and ask to go over the specs that you sent to them. When you get to the colors, they will most likely own up to having made a goof. No doubt you will have to ship it back to be fixed, but if the company is any good they will turn it around in a week or so.

Just be diplomatic and polite. If they won't play, then you might have to revisit later.

PaulN,

Has it right. Give the company some time to call you back. Professionally go over the order specifications together, find out where the error occured.

Paint fill changes are an easy change. The stampings change would require them to make you a new head.

If the stampings are acceptable and they correct the paintfill, I would ask for a small reduction in price 10% or someother compensation that doesnt financially hurt them. A additional headcover maybe, or a price break on your next order.

Is that right - are the colors easy to refill? I assumed they'd have to make me a brand new head. Yeah I emailed him the proof that he sent me that I okayed, which shows the differences. Unfortunately I had wanted it for a tournament on Oct 1, but I guess that wouldn't happen if I had to send it back. But if it really isn't that hard to professionally re-do then I guess it makes it a simple decision for me (and should be for them).

Give them some time to make it right. I know personally for us we get a lot of orders so sometimes things slip by but we have went out of our way to make sure everyone is happy. I imagine any custom putter maker would like the same opportunity, and I know for us since it is a part time thing sometimes it takes a little while before we are able to respond.

Just to be clear. I am confused a little.

The stampings are correct?

However the paintfill is what is wrong?

The headcover is also incorrect?

Is the proof that you signed off on, is the putter correct to that proof?

Not to defend the company but in production that is why proofs are sent. Everyone makes mistakes, but if it is just changing the paintfill colors it should not be too big of a problem.

Hi thanks for all your responses.

Rob - the stampings are correct, the paintfill color on two of them were flip-flopped though. The only reason it's a noticeable problem to me is because they don't match the corresponding stamps' paintfills

Yeah, headcover was wrong too.

Proof was right, the putter doesn't match the proof.

Yeah I'm not that concerned with the headcover, but good news on the paintfills. Hopefully I'll hear their offer/plan soon. Of course, I'm sure rushing a putter isn't all that cheap so I assume they'll pick up the shipping seeing as how everyone seems to unanimously agree its a quick fix that any reputable company would be happy to do.

If it were me, I'd just play w/ the putter as is until you have the time to send it back to the maker and have them correct the paintfill. I'm sure they will correct the errors but you have to give them enough time to do so, so I'd just wait until your tournament schedule is clear and you're not going to be playing in anything for a couple of weeks.

Yeah that's a good point too - because if they don't need to make me a new head, which it seems like everyone agrees they won't, I don't have to worry about sending back a used putter. That said, I might be better suited sending it back ASAP and not going back and forth between putters until its here for good.

If the restaurant is any good, they want you to send the food back and leave happy. Otherwise, you end up not coming back and usually will not give a reccomendation to any freinds. I'm sure the putter company is no different and wants to make sure that you are a happy customer. Call and explain what is wrong and if they don't want to take care of it then you know what kind of company you are dealing with. If it's any of the customer makers on this forum I have no doubt that they will do whatever it takes to make it right.

And next time your meal is not to your liking, send it back. I have a very good freind who runs 6 restaurants and I'm amazed at what he will do to make sure that you want to come back!

If we had a customer that had a complaint like this, we would definately want the customer to let us know so that we could make it right. It wouldn't matter if it is a simple item, like the paintfill, or a more complex. Whenyou order a custom putter built to spec, there is no reason for you to be unhappy with the final results.
