I miss steel spikes.

I wish they were still an option. I know soft spike are good and I don't have a problem with them. They save clubs a great deal of money on carpet and other areas in club houses. I have found that now, I have more people walk in and through my line with spike less or soft spike shoes. I was told by a another player one time that" it ok because they were soft spiked shoe". I miss that sound when I was a kid on a summer Saturday morning. Most of you have never heard it but it was music to my ears.

I say yes and no. Steel spikes are great on some courses with thick rough but the marks that people would leave on the greens is no trade off. People who walk in your line should no better. If they give you soft spikes as the reason to be able to, that is utter nonsense. You are right about the sound though. I do miss the clickity clackity sound. Almost like the sound the roller coaster makes making its way up the first giant hill.

Did you ever need to change metal spikes? I go through three or four sets of soft spikes during the lifetime of a shoe and the spikes are somewhat expensive and its a hazzle to change them.

I remember my days working at the golf shop and trying out the FootJoy Classics. Best looking shoes around at the time. Never could afford them since I was in high school at the time and minimum wage was $3.75. I also remember the Carbide titanium tips then the company swore would never wear down. Then the soft spike replacement came in and courses were starting to outlaw steel spikes all together. I always thought we would circle back and have steel spikes as an option. Now more and more tour players are wearing comfortable tennis shoe style looking shoes so not sure if the steel spike will ever make a comeback. I never thought it was the steel spikes that were the issue. Its the same guy dragging his feet as the golfer who gouges at the hole trying to retrieve his golf ball.

This right here. The problem isn't steel so much as chuckleheads dragging their feet on the greens. I'm convinced that golf isn't nearly expensive enough when you see how some people treat the course.

As a kid, Saturdays and Sundays were: Upto the golf club; enter the competition - get changed and then wait for the draw to announced so you knew who you were playing with and what tee (Shotgun starts).

The sound of steel spikes on the concrete path outside indicated everyone was heading out to the course and it was "Game-on" time !

Ah, the sound of shrill screams as people slipped on concrete, the shoes that took forever to break in (steel back plates for the spikes), the joy of replacing spikes that had rusted in, spike marks, real spike marks, yep, I miss all that. Plus, in our case, replacing door thresholds every year and the carpet in the clubhouse. Good times, good times.
