Nnn...maybe one way of putting it, but the light weight seems to be asking to hit it all over the map, regardless of who you are or how you swing.

Possibly ... maybe a tad more overall weight would help. If not in the shaft, then a small cb weight for feel in the hands and a bit more overall weight, or a slight addition to the head.

But from what I see on the local range, a lot of 40+ guys could use these in stock form...

Have been looking for a FW that launches easy, flies high, bores without ballooning, and lands soft....the new Big Bertha 5 wood fits the bill. Longer than my TM 3HL, sweeter looking classic shape. Alignment graphics on face frame the ball perfectly. War Bird sole great for cutting thru bushy lies in the rough. And, get a life guys--- who cares what a badge on the bottom of the sole looks like. Its on the bottom because it's the bottom!! From the top, this entire series of clubs has a beautifully proportioned classic pear shape that just makes you want to rip it!

I will say, however, that the shiny black patent leather plastic stuff on the headcovers is grotesque. Immediately dumped them and switched out for my beautiful knit black and lime Rocket Tours.

I'm not normally one to play OEM headcovers as it is (one Bucky Badger for the driver, some knit ones for the others) and since I have three Callaway woods in my bag, I'm happy I'm like that. I don't think the headcovers have been that great over the past little while. But, it is just a headcover.

This could be a really good driver with the correct shaft. The black paint with the classic Callaway profile is very appealing. However I was averaging 7 yards more distance on the simulator with my G30, with accuracy being about equal.

Saw the V Series driver and FWs today in the store, and unfortunately, like the BB and BBA, I just can't bring myself to like the shape and profile of the driver. But then, I should also try to hit it before passing more judgment. However, the FWs looked absolutely stunning through and through. They sat nice and square and maybe even a touch open. Head was nice and compact, and reminded me of my old Steelhead and Steelhead III, It also helped that I've always been a sucker for black and red. The sole looks very functional with that old Warburg design and the face was pretty shallow. I'm not sure how I might get around the weight issue if I do try one, coming from a 90 gram FW shaft, but I'm sure its doable.

Hotmelt and lead tape. They look too good to pass up. I think I'm going to pick up a 3w with my favorite 70-80g fairway wood shaft. A little melt in the head doesn't hurt anything!

I love the look of these. I wonder how they are compared to my rfx's
[/quote]

Looks wise, these FWs look pretty different from recent offerings, esp the face progression, and in a good way. These have a more "pointy" leading edge, like the Callaway woods of maybe 8-10 years ago and earlier. Very similar to the old Big Bertha's.

Liking the 3 wood in the BBV, even for a slower swing speed guy like me.

Have a Diamana Ilima 60 sitting around ... wonder how it would compare to the stock Mitsu Eagle...

I need all the launch I can get in a 3 wood... stock might be the best in a 3 wood ... now Heavenwood might be a different story at 20.5.

Went back into the store to ogle at these again, and I'm liking them more the more I see them. I've used a Prolite 35 in a FW before, so a lighter shaft isn't out of the question for me. I need to make time to actually hit one the next time I'm in.

  • 1 year later...

I just picked up the 3 wood stiff on Cally preowned. I was playing an x2 hot 3 wood, which was great off the tee when needed, but hit or miss off the deck.

Anyway played 5 nine hole rounds with the V series. Very happy with it off the tee, and off the deck, amazing, so easy and accurate. Finally a 3w I have 100% confidence in, and that's a first.
