Adding putter weight...

Interested to know what you guys think is the best way to add weight to a putter while still maintaining its balance...thanks!

I almost always use lead tape on the sole.

+1 for adding lead tape to the sole. I've only done it once - so take it for what it's worth, but I was having trouble finding the hole inside 5 feet so I added weight to my Ping C67 to give me a more reliable stoke on the short ones. It did take a little while to get used to the longer lags, but for me it was worth it for the added confidence up close....

A lot depends on the type of putter. I recently added a bunch of weight to an Odyssey 2 ball by "tour" filling the sole and adding a grip end weight. What type of putter are you working with?

You might, and I mean might, want to try JB Weld. It's a *cold weld* product, basically an epoxy stick with metal granules in it. It's cheap, heavy, easy to mold and machine, very sticky, and stronger than you think it could be. I've used it for all kinds of stuff, and I'm always surprised at it's durability.

 

I'm suggesting this because you can get it at Wal*Mart or Lowe's, and because it is so easy to mold it might be good when trying to add weight to the heel and toe areas of you putter. Changing weight on an Anser style putter is harder than mallet heads because they are just smaller. Also, adding the weight on the heel and toe wouldn't compromise the perimeter weighting design.

 

The only drawback is its amazing stickiness. Once it's on, it's there to stay. Getting this stuff off means a grinder / file, and a lot of patience. But, if you layered lead tape directly on the putter, then applied the JB Weld on top of the tape...that might work nicely.

I posted this on another thread beacause I wanted more head weight on a cut down putter. This wont alter the look of the putter at all. It absolutely gave me the feel that I was looking for.

 

 

I have a couple that are straight cut down and one that I tried this and it is now my gamer and I love it. (Ping Redwood) I installed a 200gram TrueTemper TPS putter shaft into and hated it. Waaaaaay too light feeling in the head.

I then bought a stepless Rifle 9iron shaft and installed it and cut it to 31" Liked it better than the stock shaft, but still wanted a little more head weight.

In lieu of lead tape, I tried this and to my surprise it feels absolutely AWESOME.

 

I removed the shaft.

I mixed a couple of units of epoxy

I took a small wad of paper towel and dipped it into the epoxy

I inserted it into the tip of the shaft and pushed it down about 2" making a plug

I poured a small amount of epoxy into the tip to seal the "plug" leaving about a 2" sealed chamber in the tip of the shaft

I let that dry

I filled the 2" chamber with tungsten powder 1/4" from the top

I sealed the tip with more epoxy

I reshafted the head and to my amazement, I got the exact feel that I was looking for

I probably broke some sacred face balancing sweet spot MOI torque rule of the putter world, but this absolutely feels great with this putter. Everyone that has tried that putter has commented how nice it feels.

if you like the balance of the head theres a old trick of hanging the club over a table so that the head hangs over the edge then you measure the amount of deg the head hangs over the edge. then you can add a true temper 200 gram shaft or put lead shot down the shaft and plug it. after that add lead tape to the tow to rebalance the putter you wont have to add that much to the bottom of the club to balance out. i did my old circa this way using a true temper shaft and lead down the shaft i ended up adding around 300 grams to the putter it felt a lot better.

I have an Odyssey White Hot XG #1 that is toe weighted, but I have a SBST stroke. I feel a face balanced putter would help a lot, but don't have the money for one.

I was wondering if it was possible to add enough lead tape to the heel to get it face balanced without adding so much weight that it feels like a rock on the end of the shaft.

Short answer: no. Doing so would really serve only to move the horizontal COG of your putter to the heel side.

 

Getting a putter face balanced is much more efficiently achieved by moving the shaft axis closer to the center of the putter. This is achieved with a double bend putter shaft or a long neck on an Anser style putter.

 

Really, your only option, if you want face balanced, is to get a new putter.

 

Post a want to trade ad here at golfwrx and maybe someone has an XG #5 or Rossie they would be willing to trade for your #1.

For the past few years I've been using Magnetic tape (has an adhesive backing) - comes in rolls and can be cut with scissors.

I have two rolls which I use - both are 1" wide and the roll is 10', but one is thicker than the other.

Approximately 1" square on the thick roll weighs about 4.5 grams and the thinner roll equivalent weighs about 1/2 that much.

 

Cutting and fitting a piece or two into the cavity back of an Anser-type putter head works out well - I have a head I refinished and the tape brought the weight out to an acceptable feel.

The tape is made for household use - bought one roll at Wal-Mart - not sure where I found the other.
