Which Accessories Identify You As A Hacker?

Recommended Posts

The large ball retrievers that take up a slot in your bagwell are more giveaways than the smaller Gotcha! ball retrievers you can discreetly hide in your bag pocket. You never know when you might see that brand new Pro V1 in the water, or if your ball is in some thorny bush. Still, I would not use the large ball retriever, but if you have no shame go ahead and put it in your bag.

As far as the woods in the bottom and irons on top--especially wedges--sometimes people do that because they usually put that bag on a cart so it will be in the correct configuration, though standing alone it looks awkward. There is no doubt, however, that even if you do place the clubs correctly in your bag (i.e., woods and putter on top and wedges on bottom), if you walk the course and carry a cart bag on your shoulder, there is no way you can't be a hacker.

Damn, guess I'm in the hacker camp too.

Love using my ball retriever while we're waiting. 24' with a four ball cage, if you and see it, you can get it!

Retractable brush? I don't clean my clubs enough, so that brush is good for getting through the dirt.

Jeans? Yep, quite often when the weather is cooler.

Phone app GPS? A couple of times when I didn't get my Garmin charged.

Iron covers? Well,,if I had just spent a grand on new irons I just might, but since my irons are already old and beaten up I can go without.

Guess I qualify!

We see them all the time. There are particular accessories that low-handicappers would never use, and that if you have them you are likely a hacker. These are the accessories that first come to mind.

plastic golf tubes

large plastic iron head covers

two gloves

stroke counter

Any others?

HaHa. I thought I was a full-on hacker, but I don't have a stroke counter, so I guess I'm not all the way there until I get one.

Actually, my iron headcovers are neoprene and I only keep them on in the SUV so that I don't have to listen to the heads rattling against each other while I'm driving. I only wear two gloves at the driving range because I've been beating the heck out of my hands. I only have tubes in my vintage bag. Keeps the clubs lined up and looking good.

I'm still a hacker though ...

Are your clubs and bag for sale ? They look pretty good to me. :fan_1:

A club cleaning brush, dead giveaway.

The soil where I live has an extremely high "ash loam" content causing it to retain moisture for abnormally long periods of time. It is great for growing grass, crops and raising farm animals but makes the soil like a thick, fine paste. All of the golfers, some you have seen on TV recently, carry a brush (see USGA Four Ball semi-finals and finals from 2015).

A brush is a "must-have" since a dry towel only packs the "paste" tighter into the grooves and a wet towel spreads the "paste" like butter.

Just sayin.....not a dead giveaway.

Retractable brush is a must have for me. I remember I showed up for a tournament once and my brush had been left at home after cleaning my clubs. I borrowed the spare from the bag room kids. No way I was heading out without one.

Ball picker that attaches to end of a Putter

Seems a bit harsh, I know a few older guys who have a bad back and have trouble bending over to get the ball out of the hole.

Bro, older Guys?

LMAO, about a month ago I went with Madison to a "Kiddie Clinic" she was doin at Dicks and I was messin around on the putting green and I was putting with 3 balls and various putters that I'd picked off the rack/floor-

Well, after one set, I bent over and got dizzy and did a face plant right on top of the hole, snapping the flag and getting a turf "burn" above my left eye(the one I can't see out of), lol-

The kid working golf came over and said once he established that I was ok, he brought up this ball clip that could be attached to the end of the putter grip-

I thanked him however I plan on regaining my coordination and dexterity and it has nothing to do with looking like anything and everything to do with not being able to accept yet that some things are what they are, and I may have to adjust and adapt.

HaHa, who knows Bro, by the time that I get back in the game, I may be WRX "Hack of the Year," LMAO

Life is Good :)

God Bless Bro and have a Great Season and Year :)

There is some good stuff in this thread!

LMAO, no Bro, back then I was in my teens and had a soft mini Staff Tour Bag that Pete got me.

I carried that thing for almost a decade and won my first Club with it in '87 and the bottom just fell away about three weeks before the '88 Clubs and I've always been superstitious and I was usin that bag if I had to drag it, lol. I'd even gone to Mizzy the year before though I Played Staff wedges until '98 and the 8802 was in my bag, as it was for my last 3 tourneys/2 months in 2012.

Our Pro, Gary, put some epoxy around the bottom and I used that 2" silver electrical tape around the bottom, haha

Everything worked out so I retired it after that tourney-

However I've never had a pull cart though Madison is going to help me get one when I get back cuz I may not be able to drive a cart and goin out in the evenings by myself was my absolute funnest times and I ain't gonna be into carrying, lol-

Have a great year Bro :)

Good sign that you are playing with a hacker....and I play with a couple of them. They will never play with new or "good" balls, even if they find them, as they are too afraid of loosing the ball.

Indeed. As much as a hacker otherwise hates water, it is also their primary source of golf balls. Couple of lovely guys I play with always walk alongside water hazards displaying heron-like ability to spot their prey - the in-reach, of their extendable retriever, lake ball.

Played in a Charity even for many years(Sadly it was the Jerry Sandusky Charity, where my Brother from a different Mother had been an AA under Sandusky. FWIW, I never cared for him, I did it for the kids) and I was one of the 1's and our 4 was out for like the 2nd-3rd time and he played range balls, lmao, literally with stripes.

So I felt bad and on hole 3-4 I gave him a sleeve of Titleists and he thanked me, went over to his bag, unzipped the long side pocket and it was filled, and I mean filled with brand new sleeves of Titleists as he had to jam this sleeve inside it and he zipped the bag up.

Our 2 man, a Bud from another club laughingly said, "I think our man has his own charity goin," lmao-

You definitely hit the Pin Bro!!

Happy New Year :)

LOL! My full persimmon set has about 3/4 of all that stuff complete with the aluminum rake style ball retriever! I love the looks and chuckles I get on the first tee when I pull up with my vintage red Wilson Staff bag with FG-17's in tubes and Persimmon woods and then commence the beat down!

I play golf with two Surgeons that wear two gloves to protect their hands, and both are single digit golfers, that might save "your" life someday. Also, know a single digit golfer that uses iron head covers and carries a towel in his back pocket and employees 180 truck drivers across the country. I spose my point is, there are plenty of actual idiots and bad people in this world that do real harm.

I see no enjoyment in making fun of people because their choices are different or not like mine, and many are not hacks. I am NOT remotely PC either, just know fun from being an adolescent jerk.

Happy New Year :)

Are you referring to anyone in here as being "an adolescent jerk?"

The Guys posting in here are all great guys and I don't see any mean spirited posts-

Oh, and regarding those two surgeons, well, just between you and I, that's bulls*** with the two gloves, lol(a I realize to them it's mental so it's not, but knowing and witnessed first hand what it takes to be a World Class, Top of the Mountain skilled Surgeon, a guy(s) with irreverent quirks such as those are systemic of a deeper mental make-up, and I'm talkin world renowned surgeons, and not a single one had something as stupid as that, lol. I am in no way directing this at you and they may be the nicest guys to ever don two gloves, but I'd bet their surgical skills and more importantly, the thought process and actions and reactions when s*** hits the fan are equal to that of a single single cap. That ain't good enough. Not as a surgeon. No way. No day. You want a Plus, and just like this game, the lower the better. Just my .01 worth, though again Turbs, not directed at you :) )-

My Father is former Chief/Chairman Department of Renal Transplant, Presbyterian Hospital, Pitts, Pa(24 years) and he wears no gloves and he too is a single digit, presently a -8, though in his younger days he played at -5 to -6 for years. Oh, and he also chops his own firewood, lol, sans gloves.

But hey, if they think 18 holes with the fingers and thumb of their right hand touching rubber is gonna jeopardize those finely skilled hands, then who is a half blind, partially paralyzed chop to say to em, "Bro, you're full of s***," lol, but damn do I wish that we had a few like them at the club, lmao.

I mean, my dad and some of his surgeon buds are screwed up, but not like that.

As far as making fun of people, the only person I poke fun of is me, and Lord knows I've got enough to poke, lol.

Stay Well My Friend & have a Great Year and Season :)

My Best,

RP

I have been posting here for a long time too, and have my opinions about others. I understand your points though. It gets my attention when people start labeling, even if talking about themselves. As I said, all the readers and non-posters don't always read every word.

Honestly, I don't care. As for those surgeons, one is world-renown (five designations that only 3 others have in the US) and playing to single digit is dam good given his limited golf schedule. My point in share his two-gloves quirk is highly accomplished men that are good golfers have quirks. Quirks are near always at the core of our success. The other recently retired as Chief of Surgery at famous Hospital. Any how have a good day. :drinks: :beach:
