Golfsmith balls on their practice greens

I have been to a few Golfsmtih locations in the northeast recently and noticed that they all had unmarked Callaway balls on their putting greens. I have found these balls to be exceptionally soft, enhancing the feel off the putter. I tried a Cameron Studio Select and bought one from Ebay based on how soft the feel was in the store (for a non insert putter), but then tried it at home and on the course with: Callaway Tour iX (which I know is a pretty hard ball), ProV1, and NXT Tour...and found all to feel so much harder. The NXT was the best, but still nowhere near the feel of my in-store experience.

 

Has anyone else experienced this?

Noticed the same thing couple years ago - at the time they had several different kinds of balls on the putting green, but they were all the softest model of the particular manufacturer. Probably a smart move business-wise, but it totally turned me off.

The ones I have been to all use the HX Tour Practice balls. They aren't marked as such, but that is what they are.

If your ready to drop some coin on a putter, bring your normal ball or grab a new sleeve of you favorites off the shelf.

 

Would it be better if the shop use rocks to putt with? At least they had all the same balls, its more frustrating to tell what a putter rolls like if every ball you hit is from a different manufacture. imo

I appreciate the fact all of their balls are the same and not Pinnacles...and not implying it is a scam, was just curious if anyone else noticed. I know the Cally Tour iX's really seem pretty hard to me, especially considering their durability against the X-forged wedges, so maybe a softer ball option is really the way to go. Ala Phil who sometimes goes with a firmer insert after moving to a softer cover ball.

The Golfsmith here in Indy usually has different balls around to try. If you don't ask they usually have warbirds or some other logo overrun out. But is you ask there are usually are some Pro V1's or TP Reds around.
