More Loft for Bermuda??

Living in CO I'm spoiled with smooth bent grass greens that are a nice speed. I recently went to HI and played on slower, grainey bermuda greens. I shot 80, 76 and 72 with 35, 34 and 31 putts, respectively. I pulled out an old Ping B-60 that I used to love on bermuda when I lived in TX years ago. It has noticeably more loft that my NP2.

 

We are planning to take my inlaws to HI next March and I've been thinking about sending a NP2, probably my Studio Style, to the custom shop to have more loft added. What do you guys think of this idea and if it sounds good, what loft do you suggest?

Generally, when people talk about extra loft for Bermuda greens they are talking 5 or 5.5 degrees--assuming 4 is "standard".

In a word--YES

 

I find it hard to do this, but I definitely think it helps. The pros definitely have an advantage because I'm sure that they are quickly able to get an exact copy of their gamer in a copule degrees higher loft for such conditions--man, would that be nice!

 

I don't see how people use putters such as the Yes! on thick bermuda greens...the ball simply gets jabbed into the ground at impact.

 

By the way, I grew up playing Bermuda, and loved my old B60 back then!

Yes, to more loft. As stated, add a degree or two. NP2 standard is 4*. You do not have to send it back to the studio to have that done. Carbon steel is relatively soft.

 

I think grooved putters accomplish the same as increased loft with reduced backspin. Yes! RIFE, agsi+ all lift the ball out of its depression and get the ball on top of the putting surface.

the shaggier the green the more loft you need. grooved putters do help a bit, but i really struggle using my Yes! putter on hairy greens. the Yes! has 2.5* and while i love the c-groove stuff, you definitely need more loft if the greens need a shave.

 

this is where being a ho is awesome; i carry 3-4 putters in my trunk at all times.
