Cleveland CG Red Irons Feature:

Feel

GELBACK TECHNOLOGY - Gelback, Cleveland Golf's lightweight, visco-elastic, vibration-damping material, is placed directly behind the hitting area of the clubface in the back cavity. Gelback is vibration-tuned to remove unwanted vibration on mis-hits while still allowing the player necessary feedback from the clubhead for a soft yet responsive feel.

Forgiveness

MICRO-CAVITY TECHNOLOGY - Next generation Micro-Cavity Technology (MCT) provides better stability and more forgiveness by removing weight from the topline and redistributing it to the extreme perimeters of the clubhead. By redistributing 10 grams low and deep, the center of gravity is improved by 15%, adding stability to off-center hits. This translates into a larger sweet spot for more consistent and accurate shots.

Fit

COLOR-CODED HOSEL MARKINGS - Correctly fitting a set of irons to the player is essential for optimal performance. The set may be further dialed-in using color-coded hosel markings that denote if the lie angle is Flat, Standard or Upright.

* Bottom = Flat

* Middle = Standard

* Top = Upright

I have to agree with the post above. In my opinion, this is the sleeper of the year. It's definately worth a try and you can get them cheap online. Great square toe look and you can not see the insert at address. But do not fool yourself, these are not the same ones they are using on tour. The CG Reds that Steve Flesch is playing on tour look nothing like the retail ones. The top line is alot thinner and the blade length is about 1/4 shorter. I know an inside guy at Cleveland and he is hoping that Bridgestone buys them so they can start making some "real players irons again". This iron was a pleasant surprise and more geared to the low to mid handicap player.

rob, now that you've had these for 2.5 months what are your thoughts. I've got CG2's and am looking for something a bit more forgiving, so I'm looking at these and the Golds. Thanks.

I like the look of these at address, not a real fan of the red insert. Looks kinda silly and non-traditional.

that's what I thought when I first saw them as well, then like I said the more I see them the more I get used to the insert.

Pretty heavy swinging club. You better have great swing speed to hit these. They have great feel, and are workable, but distance is average.

I've gotta disagree with some of the posts above - I think these are very marginal irons.

I played with them for almost all of last season and my observations are: (1) the distance off the face is a little unpredictable; (2) the gelback reduces to the point of being negligible any "feel" characteristics of the heads; (3) pure shots never feel buttery and pure, and in fact don't differ that much from mishits; (4) mishits are punished more severely than you would think with a club that doesn't reward you anyway.

So, in other words, you get punished as though you're playing a blade but you don't get the benefits of consistency or real workability, you can't pure a shot, and the things are kinda ugly. Importantly, I played the TA-7s for years before I wound up with these and I loved them but I think Cleveland has fallen off from there. These things are weak.

these are probably the most forgiving cast semi-blade ive hit. the thicker top line and gelback makes me feel like im hitting cotton. I was amazed by the ability to work the ball with a cast club. i have bridgestone j33 combos too but i cant hit them anymore, i dont play enough. surprisingly, the cg red's allowed me to move the ball like i used to be able to with the j33s. I for one dont find this club too heavy at all, for a cast iron it's actually pretty light. I would recommend these irons to anyone looking for forgiveness AND workability.

I just received my set today. I hit them two weeks ago at a demo day where I hit many clubs. I hit Callaways x-20's, x-20 tours and x-forged. I hit Cobra FP's and Taylor Made R7 TP's. In the end it came down to the CG Reds or the Callaway X-forged. I picked the Reds because they were a lot more forgiving. Today on the course, I was able to draw and fade on command. Also, I didn't hit every ball solid, but my mishits were not bad at all. The feedback is great, pure shots felt very good and bad shots felt not so bad. The distances were the same as my MP-60's. I cant wait to get some rounds on them. I am a 10 hcp and would recomend them to anyone under a 15.

Wow!! That's great, thanks for the min review. My combo set of gold/red should arrive this week, as the temps in our area are hitting 70 this week, it's perfect timing.

UNC Golf,

My initial take stands. These are a great set of irons for a low-mid handicapper. This club is very forgiving for a player's iron with a thin top line and little offset. I find that I can work the club with a fade or draw, and I especially find the long irons forgiving (down to 4 iron only, as my 3 is gathering dust).

I have had no problems with distance control, and having played the TM R7 TP previously I prefer these irons over them and the X-20 Tour. Given the short money these irons go for on ebay they're a steal.

Rob,

It looks like we're both a little slow in replying :) I only got in about 3 rounds the last six months of the year but I enjoyed these irons a lot. I have them in the PX 5.5 and they have a very nice feel too them, they have some forgiveness but still provide feedback on mishits. The PX shaft seems to be a good fit for me in these as I'm getting the mid trajectory ball flight I've been looking for. I hope to get out with them more next year.

Play Well

Old clubs, old thread, but I use a set of these whenever I am back in the UK (DG S300 shafts), and having just got back from there and used them, I thought I would add my opinions.

I find them easy to hit and long. The long irons are relatively easy to hit, and the short irons do the job. All-in-all, a solid set. Probably dirt cheap now, so if someone is looking for a starter set or cheap backup (like I was) then they are a good buy.
