Watch the entire 1986 Masters final round CBS broadcast

Recommended Posts

For a limited time, not sure hoe limkted, but you can watch the entire 1986 Masters boradcast in it's entirety. I've only seen bits and pieces of it. It's going to be cool to be able to watch the whole thing.

Thanks for the tip. Just watched it. A few things jumped out at me:

the picture quality was way better than when I watched it live

I had forgotten that McCord was broadcasting 30 years ago...he played it straight in those days

I always thought Venturi was a master of the cliche...now I remember why...also he guaranteed Seve would win more Green Jackets...still it was pleasant to hear his voice.

It's a good thing I didn't have anything important to do this morning.

Great watch. One thing that stood out for me was how they talked about it being for his 20th Major. When I started playing golf soon after this (think it was 87, maybe 88), I remember reading that Nicklaus had 20 Major titles, but after leaving the game in around 1992 then coming back in 2010, I was surprised to learn that Nicklaus had been marked down to 18. Obviously, I put it down to deflation after the Lehman Brothers shock, but I wonder why his US Amateur wins no longer count.

By the way, I think if you include US Amateur wins, Tiger would be on 17, and Nicklaus on 20.

I think that he lost those two majors because some people with typewriters who did not want to see Tiger overtake Jack figured out that if they took the National Amateur Championships out of the equation, Tiger would be one major further back. It's the only reason I can conjure.

BTW, I noticed that too, the references to his 20th Major. Interesting looking back on that now, with the filter of the Tiger Era...

Yeah I have always wondered about that too. At the time all the talk was about Jacks 20th major.

It almost seems like an anti-Tiger move, like the media didn't want Tiger to catch Jack so they disregarded the US am since Tiger had one more than Jack.

I have that Masters on tape and have watched it a bunch of times. Great stuff. Weiskopf made a nice call when Jack was on the 16th tee.

This is not a fond memory for me, as it is most others. I was 14, and shed a tear when Seve hit into the water on15. I just had a feeling #3 was coming that day.

Ben Wright beat Vern Lundquist to the "YESSIRRRRR!!!" when he called Jack's eagle putt on 15. He never gets any credit for that one.

Vern used it again when Norman sunk his birdie on 17.

Still a great call, though.

I would have bet some money that Norman would get a Green Jacket before his days were done.

Kite got a small case of the "shorts" on most of his birdie and eagle putts on the closing holes.

I guess Jack had the best nerves coming in that day. Still amazing.

Unfortunately, as The Ryder Cup became more contentious in the late 80s, Seve became a marked man in the States. Unfairly so, IMO. In 86 he was still a popular guy. He handled the disappointment well on the outside.

One thing i've noticed watching it on an off this morning is there sure were a ton of high scores shot by much of the field. Also, the field didn't appear to be very deep. Only about 10-15 guys who realistically had a chance to win.

:fishing1:

Well, to be accurate, when Jack got things going, truthfully, nobody had a "realistic" chance to win.

Although a quick scan through the archives did reveal at least 25 players in the field who had either won majors, or would eventually win majors, so maybe they thought they had a "realistic chance"...

But not in '86...it was Jack's all the way.

I think you're both right regarding the major count. And Tom Weiskopf's call on 16 is great. At least in the top 10 in golf, in my opinion, and maybe in the top 5. I love the one by, I think, Henry Longhurst before Doug Sanders's putt in the 1970 (?) Open.
