Phoenix/Scottsdale courses

Recommended Posts

Anyone familiar with the courses in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, please give me your thoughts and/or ratings for the following courses:

Las Sendas

Estrella Mountain

Gold Canyon

Raven at South Mountain

Eagle Mountain

I will be out there this summer with a group of 20 guys for our annual tournament, and we're trying decide our final track. I guess I should add that most of the golfers play to a 6 hdcp or lower.....so, nice, challenging tracks are appreciated. So far we've selected Talking Stick, Grayhawk, Troon North, and We Ko Pa. Any other suggestions would be appreciated as well. Thanks for any insight.....

I just played Raven @ South Mountain last week, it is in great shape and a great course.

All of the courses are grea courses,

Of the ones you have listed Estrella Mountain Ranch is the best, if you are out at EMR play the Raven at Verrado, it is just a few miles away.

Gold Canyon- play the Dinosaur Mountain course, Sidewinder is ok but the DM course is the better of the 2.

If you go to EagleMountain in Fountain Hills, play SunRidge Canyon which is right across the street. Both are very nice courses.

Las Sendas is the least nice of this group but still a very nice course, just not as dramatic as the others.

The others that you are playing are all top notch courses as well, the other course i might recommend is Whirlwind at Wild Horse Pass, they host a NW event there and is another great course. Good luck!

stay far from Raven at south mountain, it was the disappointment of my trip

dinosaur mountain at gold canyon has some great holes but the housing is very present on too many holes

I would go for estrella mountain ranch (managed by troon golf)

the 4 courses you selected are excellent choices wekopa been my favorite

for some interesting reviews of courses

Here is the link to the Raven Courses, i dont know what he did not like about it, i have played it a couple times and think it is a nice golf course, not the best course in AZ. but a very good course.

Fair, playable and in great shape, good service, pace was not the best, but thats any upscale course these days.

Check it out for yourself.......Raven

I've played Estrella Mountain Ranch and both courses at Gold Canyon. Both are good courses, but I like Gold Canyon because it's more memorable. The Dinosaur course at Gold Mountain has some of the best scenery I have ever scene on a golf course. The Sidewinder course is also a decent course but not as good or as memorable as the Dinosaur course.

Thanks, JHR, for the link to Raven.....it looks like a pretty decent track to me....

One advantage that it has (as far as some of our planners are concerned) is the fact that it is close to the airport. It will be the course for our final round of the tourney - that's what concerns me. I'm afraid it will be the weakest of the tracks we play. Hopefully I will be wrong.

WeKoPa (just north of Fountain Hills) is an excellent choice. If you do go to Gold Canyon, Dinosaur Mountain is the more scenic of the two courses (Sidewinder is a little more difficult). Grayhawk is nice and Las Sendas has some nice holes. I am a big fan of Longbow, and if you can get on, Firerock is terrific.

No problem mkb, i have played alot of golf in AZ., it will be the weakest of the list you have but not a weak course by any means. Have fun and enjoy the golf!

Thanks, JHR.....It wind up that being close to the airport will not be an issue....

We are considering replacing Raven with Eagle Mountain, Sunridge, of Gold Canyon (Dinasaur).....just because those seem like they will be more memorable/spectacular. This round will be the final day of the tourney, so we want make sure to play as good a course as we can. Raven just seems to be known more for its service than for its course.... Thanks again for your insight.

Thank you everyone for your input.

How would TPC - Stadium compare to the Raven at South Mountain, SunRidge Canyon, and Gold Canyon (Dinosaur)?

TPC is a nice course, not very dramatic as far as views and scenic value. But a great golf course in perfect condition, TPC is usually the best conditioned course in the valley. Its is a great course to play as it is a regular Tour stop, fees are usually higher than most of the courses there as well, probably around $250.00, you will have to check with them though.

Dinosaur Mountain and Sunridge are far more up and down and more visually exciting than TPC, TPC is fairly flat with almost no elevation changes at all. Raven is even more undulating than TPC.

Again, any of the courses that you have listed throughout this post are quality courses and worthy of playing without disappointment, problem is picking the ones you want, lots of choices, but the upside is you almost cant miss in finding a great course to play. Good Luck.
