Best Golf Books of All Time

Title speaks for itself except here is the caveat. It doesn't matter if it's instructional or fiction or biography. We all find "inspiration" or some form of motivation from golf books so what one is your favorite. If you have more than one so be it. Let it rip!

 

I have always come back to Faldo's instructional book for basic framework but pretty much any Hogan book gets me fired up.

Harvey Penick's Litte Red Book is so great.

George Knudson's "the Natural Golf Swing" is great for instruction

 

I liked 7 Days on the Links of Utopia for life and mental approach.

I like "A Lifetime of Lessons" by Marshall Smith. For me , it made sense. He likes to draw comparisons to baseball and it helped me understand his concepts.

Tiger didn't like it but I really enjoyed The Big Miss by Hank Haney. Such an excellent insight into his life in his peak years.

 

On the Tiger theme as well, How I Play Golf was a fantastic instruction book.

I found Greatest Game Ever Played by Mark Frost really thrilling and at the same time it's a great insight into golf's history.

 

I also like the books about Ben Hogan, his Five Lessons and James Dodson's Hogan biography.

The Harvey Penick book with all three or four books in one: "The Wisdom of Harvey Penick"

Golf is Not a Game of Perfect - Bob Rotella - I picked up the audiobook and listen to it occasionally, really has done wonders for my mental game.

Just finished the little red book a good read. The complete Hogan is also a good read and an insight into how he went about things.

The list could go on and on, have about 20 more at least that I love, but that's where the top few stand in my mind this week. Frost and Dodson are top notch, heard some recommendations over the weekend I am pursuing online this evening. Ouimet's A Game Of Golf is a fun read.

 

My wife is reading Monte's book tonight, that should be interesting! It's really good.

Bagger Vance is my favorite, as well. Much better than the movie - so much so that I hardly consider them the same story. A lot of religious and mystic undertones that may turn some people off, but I thought it was both entertaining and thought provoking. Great read!!!

I went from a hack to breaking 80 regularly using Jack Nicklaus' advice in "Golf My Way". Greg Norman also credited some of his success to the lessons he learned from that book. It might be a bit dated, but like Hogan's books, the fundamentals really never go out of style.

 

I also liked several books noted above, like "The Match" and "Final Rounds". My favorite short story about golf is "Dormie One" by Holworthy Hall (1917). One place to find it is in a golf collection called "Perfect Lies', which has a number of other worthy stories, too.
