What Are You "OCD" About?

Sean2

Recommended Posts

For me it is keeping my equipment pristine. I wipe down my club after every shot, and after the round I thoroughly clean them.

Depending on the weather I clean my grips weekly, as well as wash my golf gloves. When a glove gets to be a bit worn, I use that for practice and the new glove for play.

I also look for golf balls once a week after I complete a round of golf. I don't need any golf balls (I have about 50 dozen), and I also don't need to be fighting with briars, poison ivy and mosquitos. Yet I am compelled to search.

I also clean/polish my shoes regularly.

What are you OCD about...or should I say anal retentive? :-)

A lot of the same for me, wipe down after shots, and first thing when I get home is cleaning the clubs, and shoes, wash the golf towels, replenish tees if needed.

I have a bit of a weird one also. All of my pants have the v-notch so they lay over my shoes nicely, have to make sure they are right before I putt....lol.

I use the same grips across all my clubs but i cannot stand having grips that are slightly off (i mean slightly) and my club fitter thinks i am crazy because I will notice the smallest thing and have him remove and replace it again. He has gotten real good and hitting the mark everytime now. I have gotten smart now and moved to the ALL BLACK NO1 grips so that this does not bother me. I have the same problem with shafts in my irons and wedges - i use Nippon and turn down the logo but if I see that logo at all i must reshaft it. I know i could probably remove the logo but that hurts resale :) so once i get them configured I feel better.

Regarding golf balls - i need to start each round with a brand new golf ball - Now, if I lose that ball during the round then I can go to the older balls with no problems.

I know i have problems but i think this is my way to stop my ho'ing from getting out of control because it takes me too long to get it perfect (in my eyes at least)

I have to immediately take any stickers off my shafts after purchasing and rub down with Goo Gone. Drives me nuts and many of my buddies leave their stickers and price stickers on the club forever, doesn't bother them at all.

Fixing pitch marks. Most of the guys in the league make fun of me because i'll walk around the green fixing pitch marks. I figure this is a good thing to be anal about, though.

I do the same thing. I've come to notice that a few of the greens at my club are always in worse shape than others, so I make sure to go around and fix any pitch marks that I see every time that I'm on those greens.

I'm OCD about pace of play -- If I even get the faintest sense that someone in my group is dragging, I'll start hustling, to the point where it is obvious that I'm trying to be quick.

I'm also OCD about supplies in my bag. I have to have backups for everything. I have several gloves, un-opened, more golf balls than any caddy would want to know about, tees, and more tees. Two bottles of aspirin, Tums, Sunscreen, 2 bug sprays, one attached towel, to dry towels in the bag. Band-Aids, Neosporin, liquid skin. I have no less than 20 ball markers, half dozen hat clips, and countless divot tools. I have more supply then I'd ever need for 100 holes, let alone 18. I have backup spikes, (package of 18). I have batteries for my laser. I carry two club brush scrubbers .... etc.

The list goes on.

I do the same thing, and feel the same way.

I rarely clean my clubs and it makes one of my buddies very upset. He keeps a wet towel and dry towel on his bag to clean his club faces after each shot. Don't get me wrong, I might swipe out the grooves with a tee before a shot but that's about it.

Re: Golf and OCD

My only obsession is starting early. I hate going off late.

My only compulsion is a wearing a visor - no hats.

My only disorder is the inability to consistently hit a draw with the driver. I hit a fade 80% of the time.

Advice about sticker removal: A store associate will take the sticker and glue off for you. Just ask.

God knows we pay enough for new gear.

Mixing epoxy properly. Right ratio and mix it thoroughly. Drives me nuts when people complain that the epoxy was bad when it's them.

Absolutely...I do that with any new club before doing anything else. My brother and my partner in my Monday league both have clubs that are over 2 years old with the stickers still on the shafts. I just want to take the clubs and scrape them off, except they're probably stuck on for good at this point.

I also have to make sure I have specific amounts of tees/tools/markers in my pocket before I start. It's partially OCD, and it's partially I don't wanna have my pockets crammed with a bunch of stuff like I used to do. 3 long driver tees, 3 short tees, 1 ball repair, 2 ball markers, and then a Chapstick. I do the 2 ball markers because it's easier/quicker to find them, and if someone I'm playing with needs one at that time.

I was going to say I wasn't picky about anything, then I read this post and realized that this was me. When I see a buddy that has an old Cleveland wedge with the sticker on the shaft from when he started using it about 8 years ago something makes me want to grab it from me and to start peeling it off. Just typing this gives me anxiety. :)

Other than that I like to go with the flow, Sure I want my clubfaces clean, and my grips tacky, and my shoes clean, but I don't obsess over it, when they need cleaned I will clean them, but I am not worried about everything being pristine 100% of the time.

I will scrub and maybe polish my shoes twice a year, scrub my grips once or twice, then re-grip every year or two. I do like a clean clubface, but a simple wipe after the shot or at the range is good enough.

I will have a go at this one....

1) have to have my clubs in their proper spot. I can't have a wedge mixing in with my 5 iron...

2) when I hit the green and walk to the green with my putter (assuming i am riding), my putter headcover has to be on top of my alignment stick. To just lay it across the top or put it on the ground, guarantees a 3 putt...trust me, this is true

3) Finally, I have to have 2 tees, both black, 2 coins (one large one small) and a ball mark tool in my pocket on the tee...failure to do this guarantees a snap hook or if there is water or OB right, a high ugly slice....trust me, this is true

Other than that...I don't care.

I definitely remove them before I play. Hit em with hair dryer and the come right off. No glue residue either.

Yes my clubs need to be clean. I use iron covers too.

I carry a wet towel with me to the green, if I see any kind of green stains on my ball I have to have it removed. No markers on the balls either, can't stand seeing color dots on my balls.

Several times a round, I have to re-arrange my clubs so they're in the right order on the bag (driver, 3W, X, 4 or 5 iron, 6, 7 ... Most lofted wedge). I used to only buy bags with 14 full length dividers but I'm don't anymore but still have to keep clubs in the right order.

Price stickers, info sticker, yes. But shaft label...are you removing that too? I try to keep that perfect. My OCD is with grips. I want the same grip on every club I play. I remove the stock grip and replace with a standard size Tour Wrap. Even if the stock grip is a standard size Tour Wrap, I don't want the company logo on it:)

No, shaft label stays on, just all the price stickers and any additional stuff other than shaft label. I forgot to say that all my clubs have to be in the proper slot in my bag and I have to always have extra gloves for some reason. If I get low on gloves, I freak out.

Keeping up with the group in front. Does not drive me totally nuts, kinda close, just hate falling behind and holding anyone up on the course.

Making sure my putter is in the bag and golf shoes next to it. A few times have forgotten either/both and had to borrow/buy putter and buy shoes. Yeah Q lets practice putt night before a round and forget to put putter back in bag bonehead. For a while I had an extra putter and pair of shoes in vehicle until I finally weened myself off of that.

Shoes have to be extremely clean before the round. During the round, can't have anything on the toes. (grass / Marks / whatever). I can't swing a club until its cleaned.

Clubs all cleaned before the round. Outfit and shoes picked out the night before. (I play early morning and wife and daughter are not awake so have to be quick and quiet).

Shaft stickers have to be taken off too. Drives me nuts if its still on. Also when my buddies have it on their clubs, makes me want to bring goo gone and clean it up for them while we're playing. HAHAHA.

I think that's it... There's probably more but i don't even realize it..

I noticed a few people mentioned fixing pitch marks but I think I'm OCD about fixing them correctly! I see tons of people that stab them a few times with a tee and then step on them with their spikes. Usually this makes the spot worse than it was before they fixed it because they've poked up the grass with their tee and then made about 30 more indentions by stepping on it with spikes. I always fix the mark and tap it completely flat with my putter to make sure it's smooth enough for the golf Gods.
