New Custom Copper and Ivory Nead

Recommended Posts

posted this on another forum, but thought i'd also share here:

my new putter arrived a few days ago and i finally got around to taking some good pictures of it. she's all copper with ivory accents. other fun stuff includes ivory sight lines, ivory sight dot, hand engraving, stamping, and hand hammered peening.

this project started a long time ago and Gene really helped define and create EXACTLY what i was looking for. in my mind, there is no better putter maker out there. thanks again, Gene.

Love the head shape , as others have stated, hope that is not real ivory for the ethical questions that arise from same. Personally would prefer a single site line and no dot or vice versa, but looks like a quality flat stick and if you enjoy it, then there you go.

Oh lord... all the freaking out about ivory.

I'd find it hard to believe that a craftsmen as respected as Mr. Nead didn't cross his T's and dot his lower-case J's before obtaining a controversial material like this.

Contrary to popular belief, there are quite a few places to get good, documented ivory. Just head over to a billiards forum (azbilliards.com is a good one) and take a look at some of the higher end pool cues. Cue makers use a lot of it and get it from many reputable sources. Plus... if you thought golf clubs got expensive, don't even start on pool cues... there is some HIGH END stuff out there!

[/quote]although some members have voiced concern over documentation of the source material, my interpretation has been that concern was over use of material itself, fail to see how discussion over price of material that may raise ethical questions in any application will sway anyone's opinion, as stated before seems to be a well made putter, just probably not to everyone's taste.

Our interpretations are completely different then. If there is a concern voiced over the documentation and/or source of the material, then the concern lies in how the material was obtained... not necessarily the material itself.

Also, I never discussed the price of this material. I merely mentioned that tools of a different sport can bring prices even more astronomical than we are used to paying for high-end, custom golf clubs. I thought this might be interesting to some... nothing wrong with that.

This was never meant to sway anyone's opinion. I was just chiming in to let people know that there are actually quite a few legit sources for the material that concern was being voiced over. Because of my experience in a different sport, where this material is very common, I may have more knowledge on the subject than most on this forum. It's a common belief, in today's society, that most (if not all) ivory is bad. This is simply not the case.

Mikey Town,
Response was not intended to be argumentative, merely representative of my opinion as well as the opinion of other members voiced in posts on this topic prior to mine. While we obviously differ in opinion, discussion of "high end" and "expensive" billiard equipment is about as relevant to the discussion of golf equipment as Lambos and thumb rings. As such, I will not further sully the original poster's thread and again state that the putter is high quality work, I respect Mr. Nead's craftsmanship, just this particular piece is not to my tastes due to reasons stated previously.

the point i was making is that practically all the illegal poaching funnels their ivory into the market disguised as 'pre-ban'. once it is labeled as such, there is no way to determine legitimacy... just cant tell the difference. if knowledgeable on ivory, then you know this already.

sure there is 'pre-ban' ivory out there, but not nearly all of it is truly as such. this legal market supports fresh kill sales. simple fact.

as long as preban sales is allowed, fresh kills will continue. simple fact.

yes there is. i played in the industry for years traveling the country and i have had multiple cues ranign from $350 one just to break with to my $2500 playing cue becasue of the inlay work and materials. pool cues similar to putters.

little late to the party here I know...

that wave milling on the face is just dope!

also, have to mention: why make this about ethics? either the guy has done the legal thing or if not he ain't gonna care, and probably doesn't care what anyone else thinks either way... that's why he made the putter, it's his jam. I don't like the idea of having two sight lines not a center, but who cares. This isn't my putter and it's still pretty sweet to see what someone can do on a truly truly custom job.
