Is there anyone out there that does NOT use a rangefinder?

Recommended Posts

I can't hit a shot 137 yards on command. I can't hit it 168 on command either. I get a ball park figure of 135, or 170 from a sprinkler head or the big ol' circles in the middle of the fairway. But it seems that yardages aren't on sprinkler heads as much as they use to.

Is it time to switch to a rangefinder?

GPS watch. The group behind you thanks you.

I am not a slow player. I take the most time on the greens, otherwise it's grip it and rip it

I played with my father in law. He has a range finder. Before he would shoot, I would call out a number and I was usually within 5 yards of it.

I can't hold the damn things steady enough to get a good reading. Partly age, partly wind. I get readings from, say, 137 yds to 421 yds. A GPS would be nice, but I don't play enough out of town to make them worth the money.

Me too. Lasers are too damn shaky. I use the GolfPad GPS app on my cell phone. I don't know what Jwin is talking about, I have tested it vs. lasers and course markers and it is dead on. Takes about 5 sec to get a distance to the middle of the green, and then just adjust for the pin position. Although, since I have played my home courses a bajillion times I only use it when I'm not anywhere near the 150 or 100 yd markers.

I don't use one, I'm pretty good at guesstimating

Usually if I spot check with someone who has one I'm within 3-4yds each time and that's close enough

No rangefinder here just guesstimating and don't really have too much trouble, I have only come across a few courses that don't seem to have any yardage markings at all and that can be pretty difficult. I just don't think it is a pressing need so it's far down the list of future golf purchases.

Agreed. The last course I played seemed to have very few yardages on the sprinklers. Pretty frustrating.

GPS watch. The group behind you thanks you.

Takes 5 seconds to shoot a stick...

Yeah I know. I was meaning that statement more in relation you what the OP waa stating. Better be single digit or better. Kills me to see someone shoot the stick and miss the green. It's in the same category as a guy who plays from the blues and hits 200 yard slices all day. I personally don't have a have game strong enough for that level of accuracy. + or - 2 or so yards from GPS is more than enough for most golfers.

I've been using a GPS watch for about a year and absolutely love it and lost without it.

Never tried a rangefinder but just don't think it would fit the speed of my game.

Nice to know that the watch will pick up any new course I step onto and be ready to go in spite of a lack of yardage markings.

I had been using GolfNow on my iPhone (yes, iPhone on the course ), but I've winced picked up a laser. It's much faster as GolfNow required too many clicks. Plus, I know the distance to the flag as opposed to the middle of the green. It's helped, but I can live without it. I also don't think it slows me down at all. For the 3 seconds it takes to get a reading, it saves me the 20-30 seconds a couple times a round where I waved between clubs.

I can't play without my laser. The reassurance from knowing exactly how far you have is invaluable. It really helps me from 125 and in. There's nothing worse than being "about 100" out. About 100 could be 95 or 105, which are two different clubs. Distance control is paramount to scoring, especially with scoring clubs (wedges).

I guess I just don't understand those who choose not to take advantage of every opportunity to play better golf. Just guessing doesn't teach you anything about your game. If you guess that you are 100 and come up 10 yards short did you guess wrong or does that club only go 90 yards? With a laser you would know. It has made my wedge game 10 times better which in turn has made me a better player. My misses are much smaller and my distance control is much improved all because of an increased knowledge of my own game due to a rangefinder. If you are one that guesses give one a try and see if you see any improvement after a few months. I think you'll be surprised.

I'd probably have a hard time not using one now. Yeah I can't hit it to exact yardage much of the time, but it takes me less that 5 seconds to pull the Neo Ghost out of my left pocket and have a look at it. I play faster than anyone I regularly play with. It was cheap as hell too, so I see no downside. Sure helps when I'm far back after a bad shot (quick math of yardage minus 100, or whatever) or coming in from an adjoining fairway (yeah I'll admit it).

As an aside, I played a course which was hosting a national junior tournament, and noticed all the 150 yard barber poles were taken out of the fairway. I was sure glad to have the GPS that day. I didn't realize they took those out for big tourneys.

I don't use a rangefinder, but I do use a GPS app for my phone. I find it slightly more accurate that yardage sticks and sprinkler heads but it's helped me a ton. I can't hit it 137 or 168 yards on and either, but to me there's a big difference between standing at a sprinkler head that says 150 yards and standing on that same spot with my app telling me yeah it's about 150 to the center but also 141 to the front and 162 to the back. It helps me a ton with club selection and also frees up my swing.

I used to be quite good at eyeballing yardage, such as 65 vs 75 or 150 vs 160. Once I got my rangefinder, I really lost my ability to accurately eyeball yardage. Now I am a slave to my rangefinder.

I don't use a rangefinder, GPS watch or anything else. I've found that after playing since childhood I've got pretty good at judgeing the distance. Guessing it to be about 170 and having someone check their watch to tell me it's 167 isn't going to change my club selecetion.

As the OP said, I can't hit it 168 instead of 170 or 57 instead of 62 so I don't personally see the need for one.

This is me as well. I've played far more golf over the course of my life without knowing the exact yardage than knowing it, and it doesn't really help me one bit. Eyeballing the yardage and pulling the club it "looks like" has never failed me, as long as I put the swing I intend on it.

If I were playing a course with no blind or semi-blind shots over bunkers or water and it had yardages on the sprinkler heads then I doubt I'd use my rangefinder very much at all. My home course has no yardages on sprinkler heads, small greens surrounded by bunkers and the 100-150-200 marker plates in the fairways were never replaced when we rebuilt all the greens (and moved some of them) a few years back.

But I'm with you. It makes no difference to my game whether a shot is 168 vs. 165 or 170 yards. I've been looking and looking for a rangefinder that rounds everything off to the nearest ten yards but so far no luck finding one.

Honestly, lately, I have been using it less and less. I've always been a feel player and have been getting back to that with a few exceptions:

Forced carry to a pin.

Off the fairway.

Inside 100 yards but outside of 50 yards. Good touch was probably my biggest gift in the game, but for the time being, I'm currently working on different types of shots for 70-80 yards with different clubs and when I know the yardage, I can hit it closer than the 15'-20' range.

Outside of that, there's times that touch and feel do better than having a number in my head. There's been multiple occasions I've hit a club more or less from a given spot that I know the rough yardage from and had more luck than a stock shot I'd regularly hit. Just last round I was standing right in front of the 150 stick and had a middle pin location and just couldn't shake the feeling that I needed to hit a hard PW. Ended up being a perfect shot. The round before that I was standing just behind the 100 marker to a back pin but had a hazard all the way to the pin location. I also hit a PW 115 in another round last week.

Honestly, I think having hard numbers in front of me has put my thought process on the course in a box and killed any creativity and touch and it's been enjoyable getting away from that.

But as many of you have said, I'm not able to hit 157 instead of 155 or 160.
