First Post: Custom Paint Fill (Nike/Cobra)

Hey everyone,

First time poster, long time lurker...

Recently, many of your posts have inspired (or corrupted :shok: ) me to customize my sticks. I researched numerous posts throughout the forums to learn about reshafting, paint fill, and customization. I am kinda proud of my results and sort of getting addicted, so here goes...

I recently purchased Nike Vapor Pro Combo irons with KBS shafts and white/black New Decade MultiCompound grips. I have some black/white striped ferrules to match. Just need have to throw some epoxy in them and it's game-time

...

Also, I am teaching my wife how to golf, so I cut down my spare Nike Method putter and gave her a custom pink/white paint fill to match a pink Winn grip...

Lastly, I went with a classic black and white look for some Cobra Trusty wedges. Thinking about adding some white snowflakes before I reshaft.

Let me know what you guys think? I hope I'm posting this in the appropriate section...

First of all welcome to the best golf forum anywhere. As you already found out there is a lot of information here.

Very nice job on your clubs. They look very clean.

I'm Wondering, has anyone tried, and succeeded, in changing the colour of the border around the PVD section on the vapor line? I love how clean the white looks on those clubs, I just wonder if you could make the border a contrast colour, i dunno, Tiger Red, to make it look absolutely killer. Well Done.!

Well done, sir! They all look great! What did you use to remove the original paint from the trusty rusty? I want to do the same but I'm worried about the finish since it isn't the satin/chrome finishes that I've done it on in the past.

I used Klean Strip premium gel paint stripper. The gel had zero effect on the black finish. The paint in the trustys did take some work to get out though. I had to scrub pretty good with a brush and scrape the remaining paint out with a pointed exact blade.

I was tempted to do the border in white also. Since I don't game my 4 iron I might do it later this week. If so, I'll post a pic...

Does any one have input as far as what type of paint to use? Obviously not water based paint, but acrylic, enamel, or whatever kind would you suggest?

You can use a large variety really. I have been using nail polish for like 10+ years and never had a problem with it. Dries fast and is easy to work with.

Whats the durability of nail polish?

Only time I ever had it come out was on the sole of a wedge, once. Anything on the back of the club has never come off unless I took it off.

Assuming you go with the standard acetone removal process of the paint, What method did you use for applying to nail polish to letters/lines?

Depends on how lazy I am. I have done the whole soak in acetone thing and removed all the old paint before using the nail polish. But usually I am pretty lazy and just put the nail polish over the existing paint. Then I just use some nail polish remover on some paper towel and gently go over the letters to remove the excess. Been working great for me over the years.

This works well. I've never had an issue with the nail polish coming out.
