How to deal with putter rust? - BB34

So we went on a boys golf weekend recently. We golfed all day and got rained on a few times. We then parked the carts and put in a long shift in the lounge. Needless to say my putter cover got soaked and wasn't taken off over night. My putter has developed quite a few small rust spots and I want to take care of this before it gets any worse.

My putter is the 2013 version of the Bettinardi BB34 exactly the same as this one http://www.golfwrx.c...nd-a-free-gift/. I know vinegar will remove the rust quite easily, but what I don't know is if there is a special finish/clear coat on this model. If there is, will the removal of this coating compromise any rust repelling abilities, will it make it a matte finish, etc.?

If anyone has experience with this I would love to hear from you before I take the plunge. Did you use vinegar/something else? What was your process/results? Anything you would do different?

I have some rusted out wedges and irons, but I don't think it works on this specific putter. The putter is mint except for about 8-10 super small rust spots.

Would really appreciate some info on how to clean these up without damaging the finish.

Rub it with a soft microfiber cloth and WD40. Should take off the little specks of rust without harming the finish. I've also used Flitz metal polish to take off little specs off of putters as well. Just go slow and gentle.

I read WD 40 would work but was worried about the finish. I will give this a shot tonight.

Others have stated that WD-40 may attack paintfill.

To be on the safer side of that issue, try an anti-corrosive gun lubricant like CorrosionX or Rem Oil. Both can be purchased online, and possibly in gun stores. Rem Oil is also available in an impregnated cloth form.

I had the same thing happen to my TEI 3 and just went to Gander Mountain (hunting/fishing shop) and bought a remington gun cloth with the oil already in it. It rubbed the light rust spots away with a little elbow grease, and kept it rust free when cleaned and oiled post rounds.

Yes, oiling is good, some people use electrical grade silicone, but the gun oils like CorrosionX and Rem Oil also have anti-corrosive ingredients that can attack rust without damaging the finish or paintfill.
