+7 77 today at a course I'd never seen before (Pioneer Hills). T-MB 2i was money all day, and the putter saved me several times. Was +6 on the front 9 alone and had a very solid back 9. Another round tomorrow morning at Saratoga National. Hoping for another solid showing.

Beautiful day today; how'd you end up playing? I got out Friday and today at National. Greens a little furry but overall I was pleased with how the course is going to shape up this year.

Shot 79 from the "preferred" tees at national (about 6400 yds) yesterday. was +2 on the front with a double, a bogey and a birdie. +5 on the back with a double on 18 with a lost ball left off the tee. I played with the M1 at national yesterday to break her cherry. All in all, not bad but im not a fan of the Fubuki in it. It just wasnt as long or as consistent as my 915D2 has been for me with the Elements Chrome. If i could find the right shaft for it, it might be better. my bunker play left much to be desired as well. cost myself at least 3 shots out of bunkers and had another 3 penalty strokes throughout the round, along with 2 holes that i 3 putted. just a few bone headed mistakes. Honestly, as nice as the M1 looks, im probably going to just toss it up on the BST. i really dont have a need for it. The M1 430, a SLDR 430, a couple shafts, and a few other clubs will be posted up tonight. I need less options at this point, not more.

Just curious did you notice much difference between the M1 430 & SLDR 430 as far as launch and spin? I can't imagine replacing my SLDR 430, but the M1 430 was the only thing of late I contemplated on trying. I've not seen or hit the M1 430 before, but from what I've read on here it launches and spins a touch more the SLDR 430.

When you say "national" you mean Satoga National I take it? How was the condition?

M1 with the same shaft as the SLDR launched a TON higher for me. The M1 was a 9.5* and the SLDR was a 12*. And the M1 had the weight all the way forward. I'm not 100% sure on the spin aspect of things as I was never on a monitor with the M1. I sold the M1 head already on the BST. I'm back to the 915D2 with the Elements Chrome shaft. Debating on selling the kuro kage XT that I got with the M1 as well as a few other clubs. I'll be going to get fitted at Titleist in a month and will most definitely require some funds to purchase the clubs I'm fitted for at that point.

I was referring to saratoga national... played it again yesterday with less than stellar results. I've been fighting with a knot in my back for a couple weeks now that I haven't been able to alleviate....until the 18th hole yesterday when I ripped a 291 yd drive up the right side of the fairway. Best shot I hit all day.

  • 1 month later...

so over the last nearly 2 months my bag has undergone a HUGE overhaul. on 6/7/16 i went to Titleist's Manchester Lane facility and was fitted for a full bag (minus the putter) up to and including which ball i should be playing to improve my game. i have played the V1x religiously for the last several years and thoroughly expected this would be the correct ball for me. I was wrong. the Pro-V1 suits my swing much better with lower spin off every club in the bag. More on that later...

i arrived at Manchester lane already with a relatively new set of clubs... all Titleist of course as my handle would imply.

It looked something like this:

915D2 9.5* Elements Chrome 6f5t x-flex

915F 15* D+ 80 stiff

915Hd 20.5 D+92 stiff

T-MB 4i KBS Tour Stiff +1/2" 3* up

716CB 5-pw KBS tour LE S+ softstepped 1x +1/2" 3* up

vokey SM5 50.08F TI S400 +1/2" 3*up 1* weak

vokey SM5 56.10S TI S400 +1/2" 3* up 1* strong

vokey SM5 58.11K TI S400 +1/2" 3* up 1* weak

i arrived and met my fitter Alex Stimpson who showed me around the facility. They were running some tests on some new prototype ProV1 and V1x balls on iron byron when i arrived which i got a chance to watch for a while. They try and replicate "average pga tour conditions" by targeting 168mph ball speed off the driver which i thought was really interesting. I got ready and wnt to get warmed up on the range for a while, got loose and limber and then he started recording a few 7 iron and some 5 iron shots on Trackman. Alex pointed out within the first 6 shots that my spin numbers were extremely high to the point i was spinning a 5iron at nearly 9000 rpms. I believe the comment made was "how does it feel to spin a 5 iron back from 180 out?" we went through several different shafts C-Taper 130x, PX 6.5, TourV X-flex, and finally settled into X100's.. then focused on which head i should be playing to match proper spin and launch conditions. i was already playing the cb's so we started with them and they continued to spin significantly more than Alex was comfortable with. we moved on to the Ap2's and immediately saw better results. ball speeds jumped up a couple miles an hour and spin dropped with the 5iron to the 6250 range. while this is still on the higher end of "acceptable, he said it was MUCH better and more manageable and about as good as i was going to achieve. we then moved on to hybrid and fairways. again, we found the spin way too high, mostly due to the shafts not being stiff enough. i had been playing 80 and 90 gram stiff shafts in the fairway and hybrid respectively and found as a result of the fitting that these are just not strong enough. (passive brag) haha. i was swinging 3w around 106mph and hybrid at or around 100mph consistently. We settled on the 915F 13.5* head as well as the 19* head in the 816H2 hybrid if i should decide to go back to a hybrid, as i have gravitated more to the T-Mb 2i of late. We sorted out the shafts and settled on the D+ 80X in the fairway and the D+90X in the hybrid. On to the driver. I hit a few shots and they asked how well i had been hitting them and they were relatively solid.. maybe a slight miss here or there but very nice flight off the face. he said "we will improve on that no problem". it turned out i had been spinning the 9.5* over 4000 rpms. so on to lower loft. first to 8.5* then into a 7.5* head and then started trying a few different shafts. he loads up the HZRDUS in the 7.5* head and everything started coming off dead straight and LONG. some of the longest ive ever hit easily. he says "come see for yourself". i had been hitting my setup 259 carry and 268 total. the new setup was 272 carry and 297 total with 2650rpms spin. yep. that was now locked in the bag.

the wedges were next up. I was happy with my gapping with my wedges, however i felt like my lob wedge was relatively useless for anything but sand. we went to the short game area and hit several different grinds he thought would work well for me. tried the low bounce K grind, the S grind and even the L.. we stuck with the 50.12F grind but went to the TI S400 shafts in the wedges as they seem to work very well. the sand wedge went to a 54*S grind and bent a degree weak to add bounce rather than decrease it. "bounce is your friend" i was told repeatedly haha. then for the lob wedge we went to the 60.10S grind hit several shots around the greens then a few out of their bunkers with it which were nearly holed... wedges were MONEY at that point. i left there now knowing exactly what i needed and to try and put together the perfect bag to be able to get the most out of my game.

ive managed to procure the vast majority of what i was fit for. the wedges, irons and fairway shafts are locked. the bag now looks like this:

ive decided to give the HZRDUS a shot in the fairway temporarily to see how that works. if it isnt working how id like ill snag the D+80x and go from there.

915D2 7.5* HZRDUS 62g 6.5 x-flex

The Manchester Lane facility is nice. its more of a R&D facility than something you'd expect for catering to the public. its all about function. Dont get me wrong though. The grass is immaculate. the bunkers are perfectly raked and groomed. There's NOTHING out of place. i did take some pics which ill add to this post actually.

Nice bag, I'd game that setup. What's the scoop on the Manchester Ln fitting? Price, easy to get in, just a phone call to set up or is it by invitation?

I'll be in your area a month from today to take my every other year trip to my hometown for 5-6 days of nonstop golf. Looking forward to playing a non Texas course for a change.

Have to call Titleist and schedule the fitting. I called in February and couldn't get in until june.

Price is $250 per group of clubs. 250 for wedges, 250 for irons And 250 for woods/driver. If you do all of them together they knock 100$ off for a total of $650. It's pricey but if you're positive you want Titleist clubs, there's no place better to go for a fitting. It's either Manchester lane or oceanside. I was fortunate enough to be close enough to be able to drive there as a day trip for the fitting.

No. That price is for the fitting only. You cannot purchase clubs directly from them. They email you or your pro shop your specs and you can order from whomever you like for the clubs. It's definitely pricey, but if you KNOW that you want Titleist clubs, there's no place better.

So, it's been roughly 2 months since my fitting at Titleist. I've procured everything I was fit for and managed to get in about 12 rounds since then. My handicap at the time of the fitting was a 6.1 and has since dropped to a solid 4.9 after quite a few good rounds including a 78 around Bethpage Black from about 6800yds (which included birdies on 7,10,12,17, and 18). Ball striking has vastly improved. Driving accuracy has improved. Driving distance has improved and proximity to the hole sure as hell feels alot closer to me. i also picked up a new putter in an attempt to improve with the flatstick. a 2016 Scotty Cameron Select Newport Notchback. only had it in play for 1 round so far but seems to be an improvement so far.

Awesome!! Glad to hear. I've been thinking/wanting to try Manchester lane since reading about it in this thread. And this post just makes me want to do it even more now. You know the situation up here where I'm at for fitting so need to beat a dead horse on how much it sucks. Glad to hear your seeing "real world" improvements on the course, and not just on LM numbers.

Enjoy the new clubs and and last few months of our season (I'm being optimistic we'll have another late season like last year lol).

Keep us updated!!

EDIT: Any plans on getting the 917? I'm going out on a limb and ordering a D3 8.5 with whatever Whiteboard, sounds like the there'll be a WB Limited Edition coming as a stock option. Picking up another Ahina 70s to compare the 917 with both shafts vs. my 430 SLDR Ahina 70s and WB LE. Any interest in it for for you? Or are you waiting to go back to Manchester lane for a 2nd driver fitting sometime down the line?

$650 isn't that bad for such a professional fitting.

The bag looks sick. Congrats on the round at bethpage. Such a gorgeous course

Great round at Bethpage! I think I may do the same fitting in the future, 2 year goal.

NYS Amateur Series tournament on 9/6 at The Country Club of Troy, NYS Mens Mid-Am Qualifier on 9/7 at McGregor Country Club and then the Mid-Am is 9/23-9/25 at Stafford Country Club if all goes well. Then the NYS Amateur Series Championship will be 10/3 at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester. The only tournament in question is if I qualify for the Mid-Am. they are taking the top 14 and ties and there are 36 entrants. As far as recent tournaments go, I just competed in the Capital District golf championship at Colonie Golf and Country Club. I was 2 shots clear of the field with 2 holes to play. I went bogey bogey and was tied after 18. went to a playoff and I choked on the 1st playoff hole. to finish second. Hopefully better finishes to come.

  • 2 weeks later...

Shot 73 gross, 68 net to win at Country Club of Troy by 1 shot. Then shot 79 at McGregor Links to finish tied for 6th and qualified for the NYS Mid-Amateur Championship at Stafford! Was +3 through 16 holes at McGregor and ended up with a quad bogey on 17. Made par at 18 to secure my spot in the Mid-Am field. Sooo Stoked!

Thanks for the kind words guys! I'm excited to make the trip out to buffalo in a week and see what i can do. 54 hole stroke play. 125 golfers to start with a cut after the first round to low 60 and ties and cut after 2nd round to low 30 and ties. GHIN handicap revision came out today and i dropped again from a 4.7 to a 4.2. trending in the right direction!

Enjoyed reading through your fitting....It's been a dream for me to get fitted ( and actually get brand new sticks made to those specs ). I'm sick of crawling around the BST trenches :)

What color HZRDUS are you playing?

Great write up on the fitting and congrats on bringing down the handicap. Curious if you compared the T-MB 2 & 4 against the AP2 3 & 3 irons and what the results were.
