My wife is away so I got to play with fire.
After seeing some nice work being done to putters lately. I thought I would give it a crack.

Thanks to Deerslayer for responding to my emails and TS for the long early morning chat we had in early December.

I added the site dot to my Scotty Newport Button back. It took a while to do as I was being very careful to line it up properly etc. (I practiced on my old bulls eye. Poor bull eye gets all the crappy grips etc.)

I then pulled the weights and the insert. Pulling the insert was a pain in the butt. I took my time and it finally came out. Prep took sometime as I didn't want any imperfections on the putter. Out came the torch. I re-sealed the insert with black silicon and used Black and Red paint fill. I also changed the grip to the Red Scotty cord.

Here are the results. I like it.

Man that is a beatiful job...You are extremely brave to try this on such a pricey putter. Either you have an extremely expendable income or you have brass Cajones...haha very well done.

    Thanks all.

Well I don't have expendable income so it must be brass Cajones. lol

Trust me, I thought about it for hours. The decision wasn't easy because I didn't want a messed up Button Back.

I worked on the putter over a few days. I'd say about 8 hours over 3 days. I took my time.

    That turned out beautiful!

I know just how you felt. As a kid, I would take apart my Honda SL70 mini bike just to take it apart and put it back together. I men down into the engine and all. The only thing that would stop me was when I needed a specialized tool I didnt have. I can remember sitting there when I had everything apart looking thinking.....wow, I have to get this back together now. image/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> From those times as a kid, I have learned not to be afraid to take anything apart. As long as you watch how it comes apart, you know what to do to get it back.

VERY NICE WORK and your cojones paid off! I really like the black seal better than the white OEM.

where did you get the black silicon? at lowes or any other hardware supplier? I cant remember seeing any other colors other than white and off white, but i agree that the black looks much better than white. the finish now looks exactly like charcoal mist. great job.

Bought mine at Canadian Tire. So you won't find a CT in the US.

I have seen it at Home depot or try an automotive supplier as well.

Do you have to pull the shaft to torch the putter? How long do you have to have the heat on it for the color to change?

    BTW, the putter looks great.

I did pull the shaft. The head was so hot the epoxy holding the head would have melted away so I pulled it and reinstalled it after I was done cleaning the head up. No biggie there.

The color starts to change pretty quick. I did have the touch on it for for 35mins to 45 mins. I wanted the color to be uniform and get the darker gray color.

    On Black Silicone.....

The best place to find it (as mentioned) is an auto parts store. Black silicone is used to seal (or reseal) windshields and other non-movable windows.

Anyone ever try adding some food coloring to a white, water-based silicone?? That would be pretty cool to make orange, red, green, or whatever silicone around the insert........

    Just a thought...... image/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Permaseal "Ultra Black" silicone is what I use. It is also an adhesive and is resistant to gas, oil and other nasty stuff.

I use it on all the Motorcycle, ATV and Jetski work I do.

Any Auto Parts store will have it plus WalMart if I remember correctly.

Can you add more pictures of this putter? I want to see more of the finish? I cant tell from the pictures if you have colors coming out or if it the putter is just grayer now? How long did you torch for that effect.

I had the touch on it for about 45 mins. The flash on the camera lightened it up a bit. You can really notice it in person. I used a propane touch which only gets so hot. I have seen some touched putters that are darker but that isn't the look I was going for.

Once the head cooled down I took a very finest scotch brite pad and a little auto sol and cleaned and shined it up. It really looks great in person.
