help me with putters <$220?

Ping, Yes, Rife, Betti, etc
Really want to buy a new putter soon. But not a lot of shops near me, especially ones selling Yes, Rife, etc. Most shops have indoor putting greens. So demoing a putter isn't the best near me. So I'm asking for some help. Not really looking to spend more than $200-$250. My biggest problem is distance control on long putts (I'll leave a 30ft putt 15 feet short) I also have trouble with speed control on short putts( I'll read it as firm left edge, but hit it too soft and it'll break too much now) I have a cheap $20 putter with an insert. Looking at an anser style probably, the only mallet I like the looks of is Ping CrazE.

So what putters are best on distance control and/or what characteristics do I want. Really liking the Rife Cayman, but have heard the grooves take away the feel?

for that kind of money you can get a VERY nice 2nd hand Byron

(not my listing)

Rife - i had an Aussie and although the roll was great, I wasn't crazy about the feel. Actually I found that it may have rolled too well?

Yes - Tried a few times, never liked them.

Mizuno Bettinardi - The C series can be had for ~$100 brand new these days, and thats fantastic value considering the product that you're getting. I found the nickel on carbon to be very responsive and distances can be controlled with relative ease.

Ping Redwood - A little less clicky and more solid feeling than the C series for me, another putter with great roll without having any 'roll technology', just your normal high quality milled putter.

Sounds like you need to ditch the insert for something firmer. I'm loving my Rife Barbados. I had the Aussie at one time and it didn't have enough loft for me (1* with a kick back shaft so may have had neg loft when I hit it). The Barbados has 2* with no kick back. I'll have to say that my previous putter, Scotty Studio Select Newport 2, had great distance control. I bet you can find one in your price range.

Regardless, no offense, but it sounds like you may benefit from the distance drill I just posted in another thread titled Putting Drills. Probably Tiger's tee drill, too. If you're leaving a 30 footer 15 feet short you must not be catching it solid.

Thanks for the drill. And obviously I know poor putting mechanics are to blame more so than my putter, but what fun is that :) I think my biggest problem is lack of confidence over the ball and inconsistent stroke speed/depth. Sometimes on a 10 footer I do a quick short firm tap, other times I'll do a long slow stroke. Right now my putter has no feel. So just looking for a confidence boosting putter with lots of feel, and I'm a poor student so looking to get it right the first time:)

Sure! I'd also work on "balancing the stroke". Take a couple of coins and put one a few inches behind the ball just outside the target line and one the same distance past the ball. Make the length of the backswing and forward swing consistent. Lots of people think a short backswing and accelerate through with a much longer through stroke is the way to go. Studies with the SAM Putt Lab indicate that makes for the worst distance control!

Of course, a new putter never hurts!

Putters are so much personal preference, the demo route is the best way to go. Even on an indoor putting green, you should be able to tell what feels good and what doesn't. You can get an idea of soft/harsh and what suits your eye.

That being said, I think the SeeMore M series is underrated. They are pricey just like the ones you mentioned, but can be had for much less than retail. The M1 I have is the softest feeling putter I've ever owned. My Bettinardi that I game is a close 2nd. The BC line from Bettinardi looks like it has an insert, but doesn't. I have never been a fan of insert putters. I like the way some of Odyssey's stuff looks, but can't do the inserts. (maybe that's a mental thing) Of the ones you mentioned, I'd vote for a Betti or a Redwood, but give SeeMore a look if you get the chance!

Good luck with your decision.

I am a big believer in demoing demoing demoing.......especially with putters because it's all feel.

That said, don't discount insert putters. I've had both insert and non-insert and it always came down to fit. My worst putter for lagging was a Scotty. Hardly ever hit the sweet spot so many lag putts would come up woefully short. And I've always been a good lag putter.

I know many folks don't like the White Hot inserts cause they feel too mushy. Fair enough but there are plenty of harder inserts around.

Recently picked up an Odyssey white hot TOUR putter. Harder insert and I'm very impressed with this stick. Seems to have a lot of the properties of high end putters but at the mid range price point. They make quite a few different styles so I recommend you check them out.

BEST OF LUCK!

Exactly. I spent a ton of time on Golf Galaxy's putting green trying out all different kinds of putters. Some got put back on the shelf based on looks alone. I had one Ping that I actually putted well with, but the face looked concave to me at address. It was too weird looking and distracting so I took it out of the running. Lots of demo time is the only way to really go about it.

An inexpensive putter that feels as good as my redwood and studio design is the new Cleveland Classic #2. It is actually sort of a mallet but has heel and toe weighting and a classic heel shaft.

When I picked it up at the golf store I rolled in four 15 footers and then five 5 footers. Made the first 9 putts, bought the putter :)

I agree with this as well. I have found that the roll that I get with Rife putters is better than anything else I have tried. They have many different head styles now, that I think anyone could find one that fits there eye.

Sounds to me like it's the indian, NOT arrow (or the bow in this case). If you're only getting 30 footers half way there then you need to work on control. Even with a $300 putter, 100% of the putts you leave short will NOT go in the hole. Don't waste your money until you get control "under control". Because ANY putter that anyone has recommended will be the one you're frustrated with when you're STILL leaving them 15 feet short.

I DO agree it's a personal preference based on look and feel, but I wouldn't even worry about buying one until you have a better feel for distance.

If you are interested, I have a gorgeous MIZUNO/BETTINARDI C-01h, 34 inch for sale, I have to thin the herd a bit; getting too many putters.

I recently had a putting lesson at a local pro shop and I can't think of any money better spent then that session. The pro made some basic changes to my stance and the rest has been practice and identifying the need for a heavier putter (thus the sale of the BETTI). Good luck and happy hunting.
