I'm playing Links of Novi for the first time on Saturday. Any advice out there for me?

Bring bug spray if you play the "East" nine. Other than a few holes, the course is fairly short. Accuracy trumps length.

That's too bad. I'm playing in a cousin's work outing and was hoping to bomb driver on every hole!

  • 2 weeks later...

Played at Polo Fields (Ann Arbor) Wednesday. The greens were the best prepared putting surfaces I have experienced in years. Smooth as glass and fairly quick. Sadly my putting stroke was not up to the challenge.

Pub seniors? Glad you liked it, I was there shooting the s*** with some of the guys after too bad I didn't know you were there!

Yes, I was one of the old farts taking up space on your course. The greens crew did one heck of a job on those greens, as you probably know already.

Winning score was some good shooting!

Recently I wandered out to Dexter and played Hudson Mills Metro Park. No one will mistake any Metro Park course for a top public access course but they are not complete pushovers. The fairway mowing heights are longer so one does not get the run out on drives and it is a bit harder to spin approach shots. Few bunkers and fairly simple greens helps us duffers but one needs to hit the ball decently on some holes. Two of the par threes measure 202 and 237. Six of the par fours are 399 to 447. The absence of severe hazards makes the course very playable but you need a bit of length.

The best part is the course is lightly used. We played a weekend afternoon round as a 2-some in under 3 hours (skipped around a group, then came back and played the skipped hole).

Stony Creek Metropark is very similar to your description. It's a good challenge and kept up decently. I haven't played there in a year or so but always enjoy its challenge. It is definitely worth playing.

What are the best 2 public access courses in Oakland County? Consider elements like Design/Conditioning/Cost/Intangibles (pace, management, etc...)

Same question for Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne & Livingston Counties.

No cheating by naming more than two. If you are not sure what county a course is in, check here: http://www.gam.org/?coursedirectory&view=county&lat=42.2808256&lng=-83.7430378&zip=48104

Yes, I have not entered my picks. I have to think about this a bit.

Did not get much of a response. Anyone else?

Teed it up at Washtenaw Golf Course (fka Polo Fields Washtenaw). Still in great shape. Other than playing 13-18 and then 10-12 to get around a ladies league, it was clear sailing. If one is near Ypsilanti/AA2, consider it a must play.

Is this the one off Golfside?

Yep

BK I got up on the top tier on 6 in two and drove 7 with ~10mph helping wind the other day. Second time ever hitting 6 and first time getting it up top, 7 was a first for me as I usually hit 5 iron.

Oak Pointe this past monday. Didn't really care for it, sort of cramped. We were standing on the tee and there were two other hole's tees and another green all within 50 yards of each other. Also, poor hole directions lead to having difficulty finding the next holes. It didn't help that I shot a 91 either!

I am driving up to Hawks Eye in Bellaire from Cleveland for a weekend getaway taking 75 most of the way. Based on what I have read in this thread I think we are going to stop at Shepherd's Hollow tomorrow for an afternoon round. Can anyone sway me in a different direction, or is it s good as it looks?

Yes Shepard's Hollow is as good as they say but their tag line is "just like up north." If you are already going north I'd skip it and play some of the other places on the way up. As far as Hawks Eye is concerned unless you have a reason to go there (?) I'd play Cedar, The Legend, or The Chief first (in that order). Played there twice so far this year and its just not as good as the others.

I agree on the point of actually going up north, but not really on the order of the courses. Cedar is the best of the four for sure, but I'm not a huge fan of The Legend. It's a really nice course, but I literally didn't hit driver at all the entire round the last two times I played it, and I'm not really a long hitter (~280). The Chief to me is a lesser version of The Legend. I've only played the front nine at Hawk's Eye, but I preferred the layout to The Legend and The Chief.

Greens can be quick, pins can be tucked, since greens are not of the round shape variety, some shamrock shaped, usually plays a bit longer than the scorecard shows.

#6 par 5 plays 615 yards to an uphill green from the back tees

A deal Saturday afternoons for 18

Has anyone played Richmond Forest before? I have an outing there today, and was wondering what to expect.

Omg. Hit balls for the first time since I broke the hamate bone in my wrist in March. It was completely awesome. Didn't notice the wrist at all. Took a few balls to get comfortable, and

my speed is down (but improving) but it's coming back. Felt like Christmas!

On a different note, my brother took some vids of me hitting balls. Eeeeewwww : D

hit up Devils Ridge today... course was empty, played 18 in 3 hours, it was wonderful. really solid course, greens were super true

they redesigned #10 into a par 3... used to be the blind tee shot to plateau fairway then a large drop to the green... it is a welcome change, i thought i played there last year and it was a par 4... could have been 2 years ago thou

I played it last week and it is in great shape, although I'm not a fan of the changes.

Agreed, not a fan of the changes, was most challenging at original layout

I dont disagree guys... that hole was not super difficult if you knew the play off the tee... it was one of the more challenging layouts in the area
